So, I was going to start up a new character in ME2, but then I decided I wanted to run him through ME1 anyway. It's more rewarding being able to actually make the critical decisions myself than have to rely on the questionable choices made for the default ME2 playthrough.

However, I don't really want to spend 40ish hours on it when I know I'm going to end up doing the same again in ME2. So I was wondering if you all could help me decide which sidequests are really essential, meaning which ones have some kind of an impact on the ME2 experience (i.e. sidequests, character cameos, news reports, dialogue changes, e-mails).

These are the ones I can come up with (not including background-specific or main storyline missions):

Garrus: Find Dr. Saleon
Tali and the Geth
Wrex: Family Armor
Bring Down the Sky
Citadel: Asari Consort/Xeltan's Complaint (primarily for the Prothean trinket)
Citadel: Doctor Michel
Citadel: Reporter's Requests/Planting a Bug
Citadel: Scan the Keepers/Jahleed's Fears
Citadel: Signal Tracking (only because of the series' overall theme of organics vs. synthetics)
Citadel: The Fan
Citadel: The Fourth Estate
UNC: Hostile Takeover
UNC: Geth Incursions
UNC: Asari Diplomacy
UNC: Colony of the Dead
UNC: Major Kyle
UNC: Missing Marines/Cerberus/Hades' Dogs
UNC: Dead Scientists
UNC: Hostage
UNC: Rogue VI

Does that look about right? I can't recall any other missions that have any meaningful impact on ME2. If I missed any, or if you have any other suggestions, let me know. Thanks!

I'm doing the same thing.
Things included in ME2 OR meant to be included :
Council saved ?, chosen councelor, UNC Cerberus Arc, Dr. Michel blackmailer, Eletania trinket (Asari consort), Samesh's wife, "Origin" mission (Colonist/Earthborn/Spacer), Keepers scanned, Conrad Verner, Emily Wong, Reporter, Fist Killed/released, Meet Harkin, Meet Nassana Dantius, Bring down the sky, Feros (status of the colonist / Jeong), Shiala, Wrex in Virmire, Kirrahe helped or not, Gianna Parasini helped ?, Talked to Han Olar, Rachni, Geth data to Tali, Toombs, Chairman Burns, Helena Blake, Rana Thanoptis, Garrus Renegade or Paragon, Family Matter, Rogue VI.
If I'm correct, every quest listed above brings something to ME2.

UNC : Renegade80% or Paragon80%, Terra Firma Support, Meet Barla Von, Pinnacle Station.

I tend to make those quests too (Pinnacle Station excepted) : those were meant to be included in ME2 (some audio was cut).

Edit : Don't bother with "Colony of the dead", "Signal tracking", "Major Kyle". It has no effect.

Of course, I hope nothing else will go from ME1 straight to ME3.

The last time I followed this playthrough, it took me between eight and ten hours, and I took my time.

Randy, you actually don't need to do Rogue VI. Whether you do it or not, ME2 will assume that you have. (The only time it is mentioned is when you are introduced to EDI.)

From the top of my head. (I'm not listing plot decisions that you're gonna do anyway like Gianna, shiala, the Queen, Wrex etc).

-Conrad's quest (the import is still bugged and will always be renegade).

-Doing Tali's pilgrimage quest will get you an extra line.

-Pushing Garrus to be either ren or para will change a couple of lines slightly.

-Sparing Rana will have her show in Grunt's mission.

-The survival of Kirrahe changes a line slightly.

-The resolution of Helena Blake's quest.

-Nassana's quest.

The
rest seems to be only newscasts / emails, so I tend to ignore them. (I
still complete BDTS, it's a bummer that the game defaults to the worst
outcome).

Yeah, I know, I only added it because it falls in with the theme of organic life vs. synthetic life, same reason why I included the Signal Tracking one even though that one wasn't actually important either.
