Well if we stay true to the world of Thedas, maybe that's not neccesairily the case.
Tevinter Imperium was huge, it was a veritable, sophisticated (and cruel) empire. The experiment they did to enter the golden city was also huge. Hundrends of slaves died and 1/3 or so of Tevinter's lyrium went to that enterprise. To kill god. There are bound to be archives that detail such an enterprise. We don't need the chantry to find out about that.

Who said that they tried to kill a god?

Like Captain.subtle said, they wanted to overthrow the maker. I think it was because the Black City could be used as a weapon...or I could be thinking about another game.

No I think that's the point. The mages started fighting over this weapon, and this battle went out of control at some point in which maybe one side drew on the power of the Golden City and corrupted it. Or one of the sides even started the Blight by invoking a curse (compare:Zathrian and werewolf curse) which tainted their enemies at first and the spread over the whole city so eveyone ended up suffering from it.

Yeah. The one thing that sells the idea of the Maker existing for me though, is the whole "soul" thing, and how souls can transfer between bodies (Archdemon). I suspect the blood might be the physical link.

Not necessarily. We don't know how the DA universe works. Things like souls could theoretically just be a part of the natural state that doesn't require the divine to bring about. Something similar to the evolutionary explanation for consciousness and thought.

You have to distance using real world examples within the Dragon Age universe because while similar they are still vastly different. While something like a soul being proven in our world would be fundamentally earth changing in the DA universe where things like magic and the fade exist it would be far less concrete in proving The Maker.

Not entirely true. There is a LOT of information reagarding the Motives and the Beliefs of TI magisters. Read up one of the oft mentioned mega post from David Gaider.

Could you link some, I have trouble finding dev-posts since dragonagecentral went down. I'd appreciate it.

Well, now it is coming back on topic.

That's not what I said! I said that they wanted to USURP his throne. He was already gone.

Usurp, overthrow, betray, house party...

Either way sh*t went south real quick for the Tevinter Imperium

... .Sorry.... same for me... But it was a really long post telling how the magisters believed in the Maker (and that he had created the Golden city and the World), but thought He had abandoned the Mankind, and Old Gods were the ones who had rescued them.....

BTW. Andraste's Ashes were not powered by the Lyrium in the Mountain. That topic is still debatable. They could have been divine.

Motives and beliefs are the key words. Not facts. It would be like using Homer's Illiad and Odyssey as a history or science textbook. They show us the thought process of that culture sure but they are hardly accurate sources of information when it comes to the actual details.

He said as fact that there is a Maker? because that is the question here and anything short of that is just him showing the ideas of a culture.

Well but we don't know what kind of ashes they were. Could have been something that explains the healing abilities and that's not some holy figure of the Chantry.

Ohgren seems to think it was caused by Lyrium, and nobody knows magical blue cocaine like Dwarves do. However it could be a bizzare mixture of both magical and otherworldly powers.  Lyrium or magic can bring the dead back to life with necromancy, so can rips in the viel.  The question as to weather its divine or not rests with weather Andraste was divine or not.

In typical BioWare fashion is questions on top of questions with some speculation on the side.

No. He said for a fact though that some sort of Maker was worshipped even before the Old Gods.

hmm.. i don't really doubt their origin (Andraste). I just don't know how they got their powers. The Guardian on the temple was most probably Havard the Aegis.

But why don't you doubt it? I mean it is convinient and I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually Andraste. But I have nothing that really convinces me.

In the magi origin it clearly states that magic can't do two things:

Bring people back from the dead (once they have died for some time)

Teleportation (don't know if this includes "telepathy")

I thought one of the codex entries mentions that those zombieish things you fight can be created with powerful blood magic.

The Guardian almost told us that he brought the ashes. I have no reason to think he was lying.

that is infusing a spirit on a corpse. Not bringing them back to life.
