One more minor question - are the brushes supposed to be paintable on any pre-existing texture, or not? Like, should I include a "base" texture in each brush at 100% coverage and pressure, or can I just expect the brush to be used on top of that texture (obviously I would probably include the texture anyway as it would count against the limit and all that, but it seems to work a bit better on <100% for some reason). Or am I just worrying too much? :-)

As I understood it, you can suggest a base texture that your brush is meant to go over, but that base is not (or doesn't need to be) a part of the brush make up itself. Judges would then use that base as the underlying texture when testing your submitted brush. But of course you could include that base texture in the brush if you wanted.

Knightmare is correct. Do keep in mind that, with a maximum of 6 textures per metatile, you really don't want to be submitting 6 textures on a multibrush unless it includes what you are using as the base texture. Othrewise, that would be 7 textures which doesn't work. And remember it is 6 unique textures. You can paint up to 8 textures with settings though.

As for everyone else, you still have about 13 hours and 17 minutes until the contest ends. Plenty of time to do a submission. :)

OK well that's cool, in the end I just put down a base texture in most brushes anyway, so it should be fairly obvious what the base texture is (it's just the lowest one on all the brushes, iirc). Anyway I've sent a PM with a link to them in, I hope that works. Unfortunately I only made 6 since I've got two other deadlines tomorrow and making a little screenshot area for each on takes time. Hopefully people might find one or two of them useful, though. :-)

Well...

This is the easiest contest I ever had to judge. As The Fred was the only one who entered, he is the winner. I regret now asking for the screenshots as it would have been great to have more brushes from him. Perhaps after he plays through PST, he may feel like adding a few more. :D

In any case, I looked at your brushes in the toolset to make sure they work. So your entry is valid and you are the winner! Congratulations!

Here are the screenshots for those of you who may consider using the Multibrush to paint an area in a matter of minutes. All you have to do is import The Fred's brushes. I will put them on the vault later and contact The Fred about collecting his prize.

@ Fred: By the way, if you made custom Day/Night settings for these brushes, please export them and send them to me the same way. I can include them in the vault submission. :)

Congratulations, The Fred~!

And to the rest of you?

You can't win if you don't play. Thanks for checking out the contest, though. There will be more brushes up soon as well.

best regards

Wow. You mean nobody else submitted even a single brush? I guess the thought of making 18 brushes *is* kind of daunting, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, I guess... Are you guys sure you don't want to extend the contest for a couple of days, at least to get a few more brushes for the download pack?

And no, I didn't really make custom day/night settings, I just changed the angle of the sun on the shiny gold one and the plaza one to improve the specular reflections a bit, and upped the intesity a tad. I reckon at sunset and sunrise you would have quite a nice effect, anyway, but I just wanted a customised angle for the screenshots.

And yes, the Multibrush takes a bit of getting used to, but it *does* make painting large swathes really easy. I'd never used it before and I actually quite like some of the effects you can do with it (OK, maybe the Autumnal Woods brush is a bit lame, but I'm reasonably proud of the others given my past experience of 0).

Nope. Nobody else sent me a pm saying they would enter the contest...

Quite surprising if you ask me. The trick, which you now "understand/get" is that you need to really try it to believe it is worth it. The contest was designed to get a decent number of people to at least try it so that they could "see the light" so to speak. Open a few more eyes. I am disappointed that we didn't open a lot of eyes but I'm glad we opened at least one set of eyes (yours).

But that is just life. People don't understand the benefits of the Multibrush the same way non-NWN people rarely "get" the benefits of NWN1/2 which is the toolset etc.

Anyways, we won't extend the contest. You won the prize fair and square. That is the most important thing. And you earned it. So enjoy it!

I'm sending you a PM right now about collecting your prize. :D

I currently lack time. Brushes can always be contributed later though.

Well, there is going to be some new news opening up soon. And maybe I can help to spark a bit more interest in this and possibly other plugins as well, over time. And yes, there WILL be more contests in the upcoming months. I'll have to sort out what kinds of contests, but contests there will be.

Yeah, I haven't really bothered using plugins much yet, so it's probably something I should look into (I still mean to try out YATT, for example) but this was nice. It's pretty good for painting large areas, though picking out bits still needs a bit of attention.

Yep, it all works fine and everything. Thanks a lot guys for running this (just a shame nobody else had time to enter) and thanks to GoG too, I guess, for putting up the prize.

Ok. I posted the contest brushes on the vault:

http://nwvault.ign.c...ns.Detail&id=95

Download them and give them a try. Instructions on how to use these brushes are very simple (it is in the Decription on the vault page).

@ The Fred: About your Autumnal brush. It is good and needed because the most commonly painted terrain by any author would be the Rural type terrain. So it is good that you did that one.

If we got a forest brush as well, we would have the two most common types of terrain covered.

I personally prefer the Badlands one to the Autumnal one (which doesn't actually really look Autumnal, I just needed a nice name) but variety is good. I'm sad it's only my brushes, though, someone should really make some more (actually, I might myself, and take more time over them, but I've got an arm-long list of other things still to do).

Well I said more brushes would be coming. Although since about Sunday, my desktop has been acting quite bizarre (I think it's got a virus, like me) and I have been attempting to clean it up and get it running again. In the meantime, I have played a bit with the brushes and there are some really interesting things you can do with it. I am working on a large scale, however I am also starting to realize the benefits of mutliple layers of the same texture at different coverages and pressures.

When I get my computer healed, I will be posting some brushes fairly soon afterwards -- lots of 'em.
