Shale seem to be only good in normal.
I'm in my second playthrough now in nightmare and he does seem to be a paper tank. He would get rip to pebbles while doing the back alley quests in Denerim. A sword and shield tank is a much better tank than Shale.
Shale seem to be only good for those single elemental mob/boss encounter. Then again if you equip your tank with full set juggernault, he has better magic resist than shale.
What role does shale play?

I'm pretty sure I've met this Golem before in Baldurs Gate somewhere particularly the way it speaks in the third person all the time
The mini quest to activate him was a walk in the park compared to any of the Orzammar or Berellian Forest quests. Definitely worth getting him early on in the story. I must have missed loads of rapier wit with him in the party, perhaps something like this..?
'It thinks its fighting its own demons again I suppose..'
Shale sounds very Shakespearean and its a great pleasure to hear such thespians doing the voice acting for a change.
A lot of past RPGs had a heavy American bias which sounded very silly for medieval campaigns. When you accost an NPC its like, 'Hey man good to see you!' or 'Come back again soon!' after dealing with a trader.

I only say ... chicken!
One good thing about Shale: you can sell all the good armor and weapons (minus the one you need) because it wouldn't fit him ... means some extra money

Cuz not everybody has reached that point in Shale's story yet.jynthor wrote...
Why does everybody keep refering to shale as a male?
Simply call her it if you don't want to accept the truth x)
Thanks for the spoiler, BTW.

he is AWSOME
1. for dps-tank-you can instanly switch him into a tank if your *ahem* accidently falls in battle and you wont have a wipe
2. chats with ppl are AWSOME and so funny
3.did I mention that he is even funnier than alistar?
