So, your companions will lead their own lives when they are not traveling with you.
This sounds interesting to me. But does this just mean that they are at their own homes all the time?
Or can you see them walking around Kirkwall? Going to the market or something.

And can you visit your companions at their homes? Maybe it will give you some unique dialogue when you meet their familys?

As for the fact that the game spans a decade, will you see some changes in your companions life?
They get married, they get children etc.

Pretty sure it doesn't work that way. You dont have a party camp but you will still have a party selection screen. Don't have to go get them like in BG.

I'm not sure about anything more then that.

Since it takes place over years, I'm sure they'll find "something to do" in Kirkwall. Maybe Bethany will set up some kinda apothecary cranking out draughts and poisons, Aveline could be like the Sheriff tromping around kicking drunkard ass and running off bandits and the like.

one doesn't exclude the other, you can have a party selection screen and and party members can go around living their lives whenever you don't need them.

I've gotten the same impression as Tiax really, but with the added thing that due to them living their lives they might not always be available for you to pick up. If say pirate lady (no, I don't know for sure she's a follower but bear with me) is getting married in one plot instance, then I'm sure she'd be a bit too busy to join you searching for mystical rats in that haunted mansion.

It'd be awesome if I couldn't pick one companion due to him/her not being at home only to meet her later at the plot location, learning that he/she had run off with a bunch of friends earlier and had no idea you were going there though. That they sometimes do stuff without you and that on occasion you actually meet them during such occassions.

This has been talked about and would be nice but I don't think that has been confirmed. Am I wrong?

Also yeah they may have some instances that certain members are unavailable and others are mandatory, in fact im sure of it. But I think for the most part, the whole living thier lives thing is more marketing language then literal.  Like you jump forward in time and they will have new dialog options to tell you what they been up to since last time you were killing darkspawn together. That kinda thing.

It would be interesting though...

sequence x: Bethany+Varric is available, pirate lady is visiting her grandmother in Rivain

sequence y: all available

sequenze z: Bethany+pirate lady, Varric is doing something secret

But I'm inclined to believe it's more marketing as you say. Even so, I'm sure I'll be pleased with what they present

It's prolly a cheap boring mechanic, and we are all just expecting something good.

Well the game spans ten years. Some companions probably aren't going to be availble for al those years.

I like the idea in principle, companions having their own lives/romances sounds fun, but I don't fancy the idea of having to run around all of Kirkwall (please God no let there be no load screens) just to chat to them. There's a reason why Morrigan was my least talked to companion.

They may do stuff, but it isn't like you have to walk around and pick them up. David Gaider said it's just a team selection screen and they just appear when you click them.

I know you don't have to go to pick them up.
I just thought it would be fun if you could visit them or something.

With the tale spanning 10 years and it being told "frame narrative-ly", you'll probably be playing the game in sections(you complete Year 1, you move on to Year 2). There will be no continuity like in DA:O, I think. So your companions will be with you as of when they are involved with the plot. You probably won't get to pick them yourself.

This is how I'm seeing the game.

The way I understand it, if you're in Kirkwall you can throw them into your party whenever, but if you want to talk to them (like in the camp in DAO) you have to go find them. I doubt they'll move around from their default spot, since it'd be pretty annoying if you had to search three spots just to find someone.  There also might be sections of the game where they can't go with Hawke because something else is going on in their lives, so that'll be interesting as far as building a stable party goes.  That and like others have said, it takes place over 10 years, I doubt the same people are always going to be following Hawke.

I dunno, they might stay in a default spot all the time, but I am acctually hoping they move sometime. The game spans ten years, you won't stand in the same spot for ten years would you?

Every follower has a "home base" that is marked on their map (the nature of that base really depends on the follower in question) which does not move during the game. That's where you go to engage them in more significant conversations, yes. As I mentioned previously, you can add them to your party whenever the party picker screen comes up-- which is only available in certain places, and only if the follower is available at the time-- at which point they show up.

so if i'm reading this right, each follower will have it's own section of kirkwall?

Are the home bases all throughout Kirkwall, or only in a certain area? Because it might be annoying to have to run all through Kirkwall (which is supposed to be pretty big, from what I hear) if you want to talk to everyone.

Buzzkill much?

For me it wouldn't have to be anything special and I somehow doubt that it's going to take on the Oblivion-esque people leading their day-to-day lives. I figure it will be more like static stuff like Companion X at home with family or Companion Y browsing the market or Companion Z hanging out in the Chantry. I don't expect anything spectacular but I think it will be more personality based than standing around a campfire or standing in random static places in the Ebon Hawk or  Normandy.

But who knows? The possibility of intra-companion romances or interactions could be awesome if that's actually happening. Also could create competition between Hawke and other companions like Male Companion 1 gets pissy because Hawke is macking on Female Companion 1 that he wants. Otherwise without Hawke's intervention maybe MC1 and FC1 hook up. That would be pretty sweet.
