Every follower has a "home base" that is marked on their map (the nature of that base really  depends on the follower in question) which does not move during the  game. That's where you go to engage them in more significant  conversations, yes.

That's a very intriguing approach, could be a genuine improvement if executed well I think.

But... I'm not a fan of the Awakenings model of moving so many conversations exclusively to the keep, and in this case it'd be even worse as you'd have to move around to talk to different followers. Will there be many conversations you can only have with followers at their home base? Or will be there some kind of separation between 'safe zones' where you can talk freely and ones where you can't?

I still think it was rather silly you could engage a follower in a conversation in the middle of the Deep Roads for DAO, but it was equally silly you couldn't really talk to them in Amaranthine for DAA.

I presume there's not a lot of walking to get to the home bases, right? A quick overland map journey and you're there?

The way I understand it, if you're in Kirkwall you can throw them into your party whenever, but if you want to talk to them (like in the camp in DAO) you have to go find them. I doubt they'll move around from their default spot, since it'd be pretty annoying if you had to search three spots just to find someone.

That's where you go to engage them in more significant conversations, yes. As I mentioned previously, you can add them to your party whenever the party picker screen comes up-- which is only available in certain places, and only if the follower is available at the time-- at which point they show up.

Cool, this means companions can live in anything ranging from a little shack that is falling apart to a palace!
And what do you mean about them not moving during the game? Do you mean the party member never means the base? Or is there a chance that the party member gets another house during the game which (s)he moves to after some period of time. Or do they just keep living in their same home for ten years. Because I thought there was a chance of them gaining another place to live, I mean they become hero's next to the Champion of Kirkwall no? That's bound to give them some fame and fortune.

Sounds a little like BG2 where certain companions would go to a specific spot if they weren't in the active party, except now its more like they have their own specific spot just for them to go to.

I"m wondering if all of the companions will have residences in Kirkwall or if some live outside Kirkwall. Just seems that if there isn't some sort of fast travel or something it could just be like an even more extended version of making the rounds at camp- just replace everyone being all in one spot at camp, now they're spread out across the city.

Kind of sad to see camp go if thats the case then- the nice thing in Origins was having the motley crew of people from different backgrounds having to deal with each other at camp and that provided a good source of the banter.

In Witch Hunt a mage says that there is a refugee camp near Kirkwall as big as the city. You probably start there, and it might have some companions in it too.

Also, if we get a Dalish (s)he might life outside of the city as well.

They're all throughout Kirkwall, but once you've been there it'll be marked as a hot point on your map so you can go there quickly-- else yes, that would quickly become annoying.

Kickass!  Will the companions be static, or will they wander around a little bit like the NPCs in Oblivion?  I love the idea of showing up at (for example) a dwarf's pub and wandering around looking for him, then finally finding him passed out in the bar while the hired help run the show.  Then next time you go back maybe he's in the cellar bringing up barrels.  Stuff like that!  This could rule.  Either way, it's a cool idea.  Can't wait to see it.  :D:D:D

Thank god for that.
I have no sense of direction, in game and in RL.

It sounds cool as long as they have their own daily routine. Basically they aren't just stood next to the fireplace in full armor every time you happen to pop round, for 10 years.

Somehow I am picturing myself running across the map to talk to every npc about what I just did everytime something I think is important happened, just to get a feedback. I don't know if I like the idea.

Every NPC?  I think you mean every companion.  I'm willing to "pay" with the extra minute of time it will take to go between companion zones for the "cool" I get of seeing companions in their own places.

Well it is not so much about time, but also that the main character is always the chattiest person in the world. I would rather npc approach the pc if it is important than the pc having to take care to not miss an important conversation, that's all. I mean if the pc was as chatty as sten then nobody would ever talk with each other in DA:O.

That's a good point too.  How do the NPCs come to the PC when they have something to say?  Maybe they send a letter or they just walk.

The majority of the personal dialogue can only take place in their home base-- insofar as the ones you initiate, anyhow. If you click on the followers elsewhere they will have comments to make, or a suggestion that you go somewhere more private (ie. their home base) if they have something they want to discuss with you. The reasoning for this is primarily cinematics, to avoid the "talking head syndrome" which is required if you're able to talk to someone anywhere (meaning that you need a fixed camera up close, or else the camera could end up clipping inside the environment or ending up otherwise looking very awkward). This also allows us to set up situations where you followers are interacting with each other at their home and other sorts of things... it's kind of interesting, you'll see.

There's no "click on the environment for conversation" as in Awakening though, no. We contemplated that for a while, but I think there were just too many logistical problems with making that intuitive enough for many people to follow. As it is, there's still lots of banter and environmental comments-- we might revisit the environments triggers again, but if we did so I think it'd need to be something you click and someone in your party talks to you about it (or at least makes a comment) rather than only one specific person.

We're trying to avoid that, if we can. Right now there's an indication if they have something new to talk about-- either a marker on the world map (if they're not in your party) or they mention it when you click on them, like I said. We're still playing with that, but I think we want to avoid the "making the rounds" mentality.

If someone needs to talk to your PC they have several options:

1) They initiate dialogue. So long as we know where the conversation is happening, there's no issue with the cameras.

2) They send you a letter. You can receive these at your home (and do, for various things).

3) They come to your home.

Hey I like the idea of the NPCs coming to us for a change. Playing the errand boy/girl was starting to get as old as killing 10 rats. Sounds neat, can't wait to see how it all works in practice :)

Suddenly I have a feeking that your LI will be waiting in your bedroom when it is time to...you know.

I was just thinking that.  Will they come to our home to "do it"?

You guys really need to pimp this stuff more as it sounds pretty awesome. Would certainly take away a lot of the negativity concerning the combat changes. Personally, I can't wait for a demo focused on interactions in the home base.

Will there be candles set up? Flowers? A lute player in a darkened corner of the room?
