In-Game NPCs that offer DLC.

If in some of the paranoia about an NPC getting in your face and saying look at me look at me there's DLC thats out now and you can buy it from me! and Oh yes before I forget, dont forget to Pre-Order Bad Company 2. Lol then yes I understand getting so angry about it and petitioning it to cease from existence within the game.
But truth be told I doubt BioWare, despite EA would take anything to that level. Anyone ever played an MMO? You ever walked around after a patch and see a boat or what have you at the docks and say hmm thats new go over there and when you try to enter or talk to the npc you're told it's such n such and part of the expansion ect. Nobody sets anything ablaze and says: "screw you developer this game is set in a fantasy world! This has broken my immersion, with a medieval theme, yet we type to eachother and ask eachother about the Jets game last week, but that doesnt break the immersion I'm sure there was a medieval version of the Jets and John Madden."
I'm a huge fan of BioWare but in no way am I "nut-hugging" them at all, I was pissed about the latest DLC for Mass Effect, I got over it but holy crap it was pointless. But I'm not going to go off the deep end about .05% of a portion if that of a hugenormous game that I havent even played.

DLC is coming to gaming whether we like it or not. If you don't like it, then don't buy it, vote with your dollar. What I have always found funny about upset gamers, or gamers who start these huge petitions, is that they usually still end up buying the game. For example, I know for me, I flat out refuse to buy anymore Activision games. I don't care how good MW2 is going to be, they have upset me in a few ways, and I will not buy their products. However, most people that bicker and whine, still end up buying the product, and the companies know this. Until people actually stand up for what they believe, and follow through, we will continue to see DLC and other nickle and diming tactics.

Me? I don't know at the moment where I stand ... have to think a bit about it first. Right now, sounds ok to me ... but gut feeling is, that a can of worms will be opened.

Honestly I'm shocked a company like Bioware is starting down this path, I had more respect for their artistic integrity, feeling both angry and kind of sad abou the whole thing, certainly makes me look forward to the game a little less.

I.e You can see it on BioWare web site in DA:O forum..here: David Gaider confirmed NPC who will sell DLCDocSun wrote...
Ok Ill be honest I just read the first page and had to post.... where is this hapening. Yes i understand you are talking about DAO but where was this anounced or shown? the game isnt even out yet? I want proof before I fly off the handle upset like the rest of you.

Well I understand that Bio/EA wants to sell game and DLCs and make money, but I don't like the way it's added into DA:O. If I will buy i.e Warden Keep ( but honestly Im not sure I will do that) I understand that this NPC will not appear/offer DLC etc..but what if I will not have DLCs yet? Im player who likes to explore game as much as possible what including all " talkative" NPCs..If, as David Gaider said salesman is similair to other NPCs who will give quests for me, how I will reckognize this certain salesman..I don't want play fantasy game, talking with NPC about interesting quest, and then be directed to " virtual" store for DLC ( Mr. Gaider said, that if I will accept quest and will havn't certain DLC we will be briefly taken to DLC page)..for me it will break my fun..So I hope, that it will be cleary, which NPC between them all is this "salesman".

Seriously, I'm torn.
- I walk up to an NPC, start a dialogue
"Good Sir, have you heard about that keep high up in the mountains? Lots of treasure to be had there ..."
now ... let's say I already have bought the DLC, then my answer option can be:
"Yes, as a matter of fact, I have. I also already have a map so I can find that place."
I'd say, that's ok.
If I don't have the DLC:
"No, good man, please tell me more ..."
"Well, I can offer you a map so you can reach that place ..."
"Very well ... let's do business."
and then suddenly a DLC page opens? Argh ... even if everything up to that point is "in character", the opening of such a page in the midst of the game IS immersion breaking.
Ok, if I had said: "No, you don't look like a trustworthy person." ... then I would have been able to avoid it.
But does that mean I have to be careful talking to any of the NPCs? I'd say making this NPC recognizealbe without having him wear pink pyjamas with the EA/Bioware-logo on it (again, Immersion breaking) IS important.

I suppose it will be something like that. I think they'll have a logo over their head or something like that. Nothing too immersion breaking. In Jade empire, there's logo too and my immersion was never totally destroyed.
Anyway..

I really don't like this either. I don't care how it's implemented, the simple fact that it's there is the problem. This is a single player CRPG, not a bloody microtransaction based MMO. I really hope we can modify the OC files with the toolset (or any other method) and remove these NPCs.
We still don't know if the system itself includes an option to turn them off. Maybe Bioware added an official toggle for these NPCs before going gold. They have not told us yet, nor they have said if the DLC sellers will be different somehow from normal quest-givers (i.e. with a $ logo over their heads).

Thats like saying I suggest you wait for "Universal Healthcare" before you complain about how bad it is.
To be fair, that can be considered a shaky anology at best, and a fallacious appeal to emotion at worst. I have a feeling that the actual in-game scenario will be less of an issue than many are suggesting. In fact, having the DLC option placed within the setting at a particular location may be the best case scenario for keeping immersion.
I could be wrong. It all depends on how its done. If, after witnessing the actual details in the game, I find it appalling, I'll happy to voice my complaints. It's too early, IMO, to safely express an opinion of the matter.

A side note I have to deal with Veteran Affairs to get my legs back feet skin and mental stuff taken care of so yeah lol govt run healthcare is something I already deal with and it's the most bassackwards situation ever.
Those of you who are allegedly going to refuse any DLC, that's a smart idea, then when EA and BioWare see that this IP isnt paying off as they may have presumed, then this will be the last Dragon Age: Origins you'll play, or at least no more DLC being well crafted anyways, why would you want that?
If there is something on TV you dont like is your mind complex enough and capable enough to ignore it or do you go write your state rep and say this show or whatever bothers me so I want cable TV that people pay for to be custom tailored just for me? Or do you rationalize and say this product isnt being made "just for me" so I'm going to ignore one or three NPCs throughout this HUGE FREAKING GAME in all its entirety like a rational minded person?
I'm not trying to start a fire or hell throw gas on what already seems like a bonfire exceedingly out of proportion in respect to what it's all about. I'm just saying this is a product for all gamers(excluding Wii kids playland), so take that into consideration before making it seem like BioWare did something on purpose just to ****** you off.

RGC, I would not worry if I were you. Devs stated many times that it was made with caution.
Thank You, that You try to cheer me
I'll point out that the in-game "offer", as it were, doesn't use out-of-game language. You are offered a quest, or a journal entry, the same way that you would get any other quest. No turning to the camera and offering you a delicious Coke or anything of the like. If you accept, you are briefly taken to the DLC page to grab the content -- if you have not already done so. If you have, you won't even notice the difference. It will also be a simple enough matter to refuse the quest -- you don't have to endure a commercial.
So it's look, like DLC salesman will look/talks exactly this same way as others quests-givers, and I will notice difference only when I will directed to web-site in a middle of my game...well hope Im wrong here...

Look, the way it's implemented, sure it might be subtle, but whatever the case, I do not want someone directing me to a page and asking me to pay for something. It's a cheap move on their part, no matter how it's done.
Obviously they think nothing is wrong with it, so I am just going to stop arguing my case. I probably won't be buying their DLC.
