Why did Bioware/EA feel the need to spoil what companions could join your party?

Not really a complaint, I mean, it technically is my fault at going to the "characters" page (hoping for just some canon major characters).

However, I feel as if the game could have been quite a bit more epic with not knowing, ala Baldurs Gate I. (Not counting BG II, as it had the companions in the manual.)

I mean, let's consider Daveth and Ser Jory. Right when they joined my party I knew they'd follow the path of Random Ensign #'s 1 and 5. (Which is to say, they were doomed.) Had I not seen the party list, I would have expected to have a new Warrior and Rogue to join my party, and their deaths would have meant all the more.

Not spoiling the possible NPC's also makes more consequence for your actions. Not sparing Zevran, for example, on an evil playthrough, even though he's the only evil rogue.

On a last note, it also makes a player mroe likely to explore, to find the characters that would fill up the party slots. (Which could, or could not be spoiled. The number of them, I mean.)

Since the search function isn't as of yet working, figured I'd mention it. What are your thoughts on it?  :bandit:

I agree with the whole 'shouldn't know who the potential companions are' thing in theory, but in practice I feel like a lot of people would miss out. I know I would have missed Lelianna if I hadn't known she was a potential party member.

Besides, it's not hard to tell where Daveth and Sir Jory are headed. They didn't really make any attempt to convince you they would be sticking around.

The character's page is just marketing, and the characters are a big part of any RPG.  I don't think it's too big of a deal.

Could make similar anti-spoiler requests not to know that you're going to be a Warden as well.  But largely I don't think it's all that relevant, now with BG1, it made a  bit more sense because of just how many NPCs there were, and frankly, how late in the game you could chance on them.

Not reading the party list makes for an intersting first game.
Then you end up doing something like....killing Wynne in the purification of the tower and wind up without a priest >.>

Yeah, but there's no potential to miss out on the character they left out. They present a very clear "Take him or don't" choice which is unavoidable.

I have to agree about the fact that there were way too much spoilers from trailers I watched, whether it's King Cailan getting killed by an ogre, and about Flemeth being a cute little red dragon, or the final battle with the arch-demon etc ...

But meh, Ser Jory was such a wuss for a Knight.

Ironically, I never looked at the character list. So yes, I was surprised at the loss of both Jory and Daveth. I do, however, wish that I could get rid of that horrific look my character gets watching Jory die. Come on, I just slaughtered my way through Howe's men/went through the Harrowing/cut a bloody river through an Arl's mansion/was betrayed by my brother and exiled into the Deep Roads/poisoned by a mirror/narrowly escaped execution for being a casteless enforcer-murderer...Somehow, one knight dying doesn't warrant that look by that point.

I didn't actually look at the character list. Although, I immediately figured out that Jory and Daveth were expendable........ Their XP bars don't move.. at all..... >_>

You said it in your own post: Your fault for going to the characters' page and reading about them.

They tempted you and you resisted, but you could have resisted.

The characters' page is like someone else said, marketing. All the info on the DA site prior to game release was to create hype. And create hype it did, since, as I recall, people went bananas every time a new vid for the characters were released.
