I'm planning on getting together a group to play a game of Baldur's Gate 2 over the internet, but I've never actually played multiplayer before (and most of them have never played BG2 before *gasp, I know*), so can anyone answer a few question for me?
1.) Is having a headset/microphone a must? Or is there some sort of chat for multiplayer games?
2.) Does each person have control of a single character? That would be ideal.
3.) How is NPC interaction dealt with? Can only the party leader initiate it, and then only the party leader choose responses? Do the other players see what's being said?
4.) How is changing scenes handled? You know, the whole 'you must gather your party before venturing forth' thing; does the party leader just click the area with the wheel and then the game waits for everyone else to come nearby?
Those are the only ones off the top of my head, but I'm sure there'll be more that crop up.

1.) No. There is a chat window where you can communicate with the other players
2.) Yes. Whomever is hosting the game will give permissions to the other players
3.) The hosting game will get the interaction, everyone will be able to see it.
4.) Yes, you must gather your party before venturing forth.
Also, everyone must have the same version, same mods, same custom avatars, etc. You can run custom items and scripts from your own machine, and they will work for you, but the other players wont be able to use them or sometimes even see them. Some may conflict and crash everyone's games. That kind of thing was mostly done with dueling.

As an addition to 2 and 3 - each person has control of however many characters they're assigned. So if you only have two people, for instance, each person can have three. Any character can go up and talk to an NPC, and as usual whoever is closest to the NPC will end up getting the dialogue if it's one of the ones where you get jumped. In cases such as some cutscenes, it will be the main character only (whoever's character that happens to be).

Just make sure everybody's equally patched. If there are mods, make sure everybody has the same installs too.
Playing BG1 or 2 as multiplayer is def fun, even if the game is really too long to actually go the whole way. Good luck!

Use Hamatchi as well, works better with modded games than the tcp/ip option in-game.

Thanks guys
And what's better with Hamachi over TCP/IP?

Oh, another question: If the host has the widescreen mod installed, does everyone else have to as well?

Widescren mod doesn't work in multiplayer at all. Hamatchi is just more secure *shrugs*, I've only resorted to it when the TCP/IP thing hasn't worked.

Ah ok. But do they need to have it installed as well; if they don't they won't be able to connect?
edit: Can you maybe walk me through how to set up a game on Hamachi? I'm having some difficulties.

Everyone needs to have it installed, one person needs to create a new network, choose a unique Network ID and a password, then everyone else needs to join that network by typing in the unique Network ID and the password. You should then ping one another to make sure the connection is secure. Although in the past I've been unable to ping people but the game has still worked fine for some reason.
Also the person with the newest version if Windows needs to host, i.e. if you have two people, one with XP and one with 7, the person with Windows 7 needs to create the network (host it), while the XP user joins.
You then enter in that unique I.P of the user (5.110. etc etc) into the TCP/IP bit in the Baldur's Gate Multiplayer setup. So whoever is hosting the network, creates the game, the people who have joined your network type in your unique I.P number into the TPC/IP part.

kind of related, it may seem a rather stupid question, but your MP friends can't create their own characters and have them involved can they?
Only I saw in one guide in said something along the lines of "It's a hassle but play MP, even if it's by yourself" and I wondered what the point was, unless you could create all of your own six group members?
*I've not played the game yet*

Your friends can bring their own characters, no problem. (if you play MP alone you should move the save file from the mpsave folder to the save folder, but that's kind of unrelated right now)

Thanks. Would you recommend, for a first playthrough, for someone to create and use their own six characters?
I have to wonder what I'd be missing leaving out the characters the game gives you (and their dialogue etc.). On the other hand, being able to role play six characters from scratch is pretty damn cool.

Make one character and take the NPCs. They may not be as powerful as self-created characters might be (though a few of them have bonuses that you might find very useful, for example Viconia and Edwin) but they feel much more alive.
