I completed Mass Effect and kept my save games ready for Mass Effect 2. Unfortunately my hard drive got corrupted before I could play Mass Effect 2.

I bought a new hard drive and took the opportunity to install Windows 7 (previously I had XP - may be this is relevant?).

I managed to recover the the entire contents of the Bioware folder in 'My Documents', but I can't load the save games or import them into Mass Effect 2. The save games show in the load menu in Mass Effect, but they are unable to be loaded when I select them.

I spent a lot of hours completing the game twice and I really don't want to lose my characters.
Please can anyone help?

Sounds like they weren't recovered intact, then. I'm sorry, but I don't think you're going to get them back if that's the case.

I would recommend looking at this site for replacement characters. They have an assortment of Shepards of different genders, alignments, and ME1 choices. Because you can change both class and appearance in ME2, you just need to find one of the right genders who made similar (ideally identical, but you may have to settle for less) choices in ME1; then try and re-construct the old appearance in ME2, and give them the class you want.

You know what, I am gearing myself up to play through a third time - it's that good a game and there are still some elements of the game that I under-used.

The only thing I am not looking forward to searching for all those mineral deposits again!
