Why, at character creation, are you asked what voice you want when it seems that your character does not actually talk! Am i missing something?? been into settings and fiddled with it but no change. can anyone offer any reasons?

Sure-- It's designed that way. The voices you pick for your character occur when you command your character to open a door, pick a look, etc. Sometimes they'll occur during combat as well when you are not controlling them.
Bioware stated they weren't going the Mass Effect route with Dragon Age and would have a silent main character. I'd wager it was a budget and timeframe issue. They'd have to record full dialogue responses using 6 male voice actors (Wise, Experienced, Evil, etc.) and 6 female voice actors. Would have been a huge undertaking. Mass Effect, in comparison only has 2. One male, one female. Same male or female voice no matter what your character looks like which would have been odd to have the same voice for say a dwarf character versus an elf.
