I'm again at the circle of magi and have decided (after a lot of thinking) to have with me morrigan, wynne and alistair (instead of leliana) because I thought we're going to be up against blood mages and abominations might as well bring a templar. So I have no rogue with me because I figured I could come back later and open the chests.
But now I'm thinking, is this a possibility or after the quest all chests will be reset?
Also there's something happening to the basement. I didn't go down (don't know if I could) before I went through the barrier. Is it possible to go afterwards?
Thanks :)

I think you need a key to get into the basement.

You can visit the tower later to open the chests and you can also finish the Watchguard of the Reaching quest.

You may also be able to get the Bash Lock mod for the PC; originally scripted for the game, but not activated. This mod will allow Warriors to open locks w/ STR and weapons, while Mages may use magic. Your Rogue will still volunteer to open locks if with your party, and some contents may be ruined thru bashing, but it saves time.

The basement is only entered during the Mage Origin

I believe he's talking about the Watchguard of the Reaching quest, which is concluded by activating the door to the basement.

Yes, it's perfectly possible to do the Circle Tower without a rogue - I did my 2nd run with that exact party and ran through with Leliana afterwards.

Me three on my last playthrough. Just bring Lelenia through afterwards to open the chests - there's nothing really important in them anyways.

I thought one of the locked chests had the Black Grimoire that triggers Morrigan's personal quest?

It's not locked. At least I don't think it is. I remember grabbing it fine and I never have a rogue with me.

My bad. The only character I've played all the way through has been a rogue with maxed lockpicking.

Thank you for your answers :)

I have finished the quest, I'm now in camp and I'll be getting back for the "basement"(?) quest and to unlock every chest.

The Black Grimoire was in Irving's chest which was unlocked.

There's a love letter in one of the chests which you'll need if you're doing that quest. It's on the 2nd floor (that's 1st floor if you're British).

Found it :)

Also got Yusaris. Seems inferior to the star metal sword I gave Alistair.

BTW there are some chests on the fourth floor that can't be opened yet (insufficient skill). Later...

There also was a beastmaster dagger with 2 rune slots in a locked chest (maybe randomly generated?), that is nice for a dual weapons rogue.

Yusaris is a 2-handed sword, whereas Alistair usually fights with a one-handed longsword and a shield (unless you re-specced him using a mod, or just gave him a 2-hander). It's not meant to be end-game like Starfang, it's meant to be a nice early-game bonus since many people do the Broken Circle quest first. You'll almost certainly want to use it for the High Dragon and Flemeth fights though, it's practically meant for those.

Yep, the Beastman's Dagger is always there. It's not as good as other endgame daggers though.

Glad you found the quest alright.

Yep I compared Yusaris with the single hand Starfang still Starfang was better. But yeah for Dragon slaying maybe I'll use Yusaris for RPG reasons although Alistair has no skills in two handed weapons whatsoever...
