Thanks for clarifying.  I agree with you more than I anticipated.  I don't know that stability needs to be viewed negatively.  That said, it is telling if that it is basically the only thing Liara mentions about Jacob.  If stability is to remain his defining characteristic, it should probably be presented more remarkably (other characters freaking out, Jacob remaining calm and collected).

He could stop saluting me for one thing, I find that to be horribly awkward. :P

I think part of the problem is his class loadout. Shotguns in the hand of npcs are generally useless, until the recent addition of the geth plasma shotgun. I know I never used him cause of the simple fact that miranda has warp, overload AND a ridiculous bonus to squad weapon damage. Most people including me, tended to miss out on his extra dialouge that way and only get exposed to his ship conversations. Though he does have a lot of normany screen time.

Whether or not you find Jacob boring is subjective, of course.  I find him to be reserved.  I'll admit that there are some awkward patches in his writing.  I just think he's underrated on these boards as far as his personality, romance, and gameplay go.

He's perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned, but the lack of anything special isn't exactly a good thing. He doesn't stand out in anyway, and on a ship filled with turians, cleptomaniacs, crazy mercs, krogan and asari it's rather easy to see why he'd sink into the backround.

Add to that his (at times) sub par writing and the creepy tone of voice femshep has talking to him, it all adds up. I think the voice actor is great, but the script doesn't do him any justice, esp the romance dialouge.

Bioware knows how most people feel about jacob, and when they go and add "Yeah, he's stable" to lotbs. Wow? that's all she had to say compared to the naked woman with anger issues or getting inside talis helmet or replacing thanes wife?
It just strengthens my belief that bioware agrees with us. Each to their own, ofcourse. =]

That's it, yes. His personality fades away, especially when compared to others. The thing is, Thane or Garrus or Mordin don't need issues to make them interesting. They have them, but if we didn't know it, I'd still find them to be interesting, well-written characters. Their personalities stand out outside of their issues, not because of them. The flipside is a character like Jack whose issues are written inextricably into their character.

I don't hate him or anything, but have little interest in him when he's not making me cringe. It's because he is, and I know you've all heard this, boring. It's not his lack of issues (Liara in the first game had issues--they even made me like her less--and I didn't like her character; Liara in Shadow Broker has even more and I love her now), it's not because his personality isn't extreme, but because, on almost every level, he's never notable. Not charming like Kasumi, or funny like Garrus and Mordin, or thoughtful like Thane and Samara, or just plain interesting (novel, maybe) like Legion. There's nothing about him that strikes my interest.

In that case, he's the worst-written character. The writers on the DA forums note that, if you have extreme reactions like hate against characters like Jack (although on the DA forums usually this is directed at Morrigan or Alistair), that just means they're well-written. A character that causes you to think nothing of them is when they really haven't done their job.

You don't need to make him exotic or something either - we actually require much less.

In fongiel's fanfic, Jacob has a love of comics, he loves the Incredible Hulk. I can tell you that a little touch like that would've really brought Jacob to life for me.

You don't need huge things. You need small distinctive/lovable characteristics. Seriously, Jessie was a huge boost for Zaeed's character. Jacob needs a Jessie. He needs something.

This would endear me to him in ways I cannot describe. That is a rather perfect example of it not being about being extreme or bizarre or wacky--just little things that make them more winning. If I read fanfics, I would go ahead and read fongiel's. But I don't.

But as we stand now, Liara will ask if you fight to give Garrus/Jack peace, to cling to happiness before Thane dies, to protect the perfect women whom you defrosted, to give Tali a homeworld...and to go out drinking with Jacob. Even the writers can think of nothing interesting to say about him. There should be ("...do you fight to see The Incredible Hulk Second ReRevenge of the Abomination with Jacob?").

Yeah, more and more I feel that Jacob was just overlooked.

I find it funny that he's supposed to be the "stabilizing" presence. He can't stabilize when I don't even notice he's alive. And when I do notice, he is anything but a stabilizing presence - he is being haughty and angry toward Thane, he is being standoffish toward me when I just want a friendly informal chat, he is telling me to "back off" when I ask him if finding out his father raped and murdered people for ten years inspired some kind of, I don't know, emotional reaction.

Yeah, something quirky or offbeat...

Fallout 3 had the character of Butch, who was a 1950's stereotypical tough guy. But the Vault occupational program had him trained as a hairdresser. And IIRC he could actually give you haircuts if you took him along later on... Posted Image Even if he remained a leather jacket wearing tough guy with a switch blade.

When Bioware makes the new male lead character for ME3, I hope they do something a bit more daring with him. Either comedic or moral ambiquity, something to make him stand out.
