Today I finished HotU. I saw the epilogues, the brief descriptions of what happened to the people we met during the game and... Now I am feeling SO sad... :(
I am messing Deekin and his hilarious dialogues. I am missing Valen killing everyone with a glance. I am missing also those stupid caves of the Underdark! (I suppose saying that in a game entitled "Hordes of the Underdark" is not a spoiler saying you can see the Underdark! ;) )

So I was wondering... what about you? Am I the only stupid here, who misses so much not-existent people? Just a bunch of bits and pixel in a game, or also some of you have a sort of  "friendship" with henchmen and NPCs in general?

I liked those NPCs too, so much so I had them do a cameo on my module (tutorial area, in the graveyard). Fun bunch, especially that partier Grim. :D

I haven't run into too many memorable characters from the modules I've played, but saying goodbye to the cast of Excrucio Eternum - especially Songbird - was particularly bittersweet. Such a wonderful game. I'm sad there wasn't a third title in the series, and even sadder that it hasn't had a wider audience.

The end of Maugeter was sad as well, not because the characters were so memorable but - SPOILER FOR MAUGETER - because towards the end you have a premonition of you and the city guard being slaughtered in battle. The game actually ends with you and your fellow troops going off to war. It has a sort of Blackadder Goes Fourth feel to it; you mightn't be the best of mates with the other characters who will fight alongside you, but you're all in it together.

@Ehye: please, provide a link for your module. I need more Deekin and more Valen :-) thanks!

Isn't it wonderful how we create a sort of bond with our NPCs? In the end, they're just fictional characters...

The module is only online as a PW you can login to, at 66.232.100.90 cep2.1 or better required along with nwn v1.69 and both expansions. To find the cameo fast, enter the module, take the only door (on the west wall) into the area beyond where you find Haggis McSnarfer. Tell Haggis you want the PRACTICAL ENTRANCE (this is the tutorial area aka Noob U.). Go thru the door on the south, in this new area, go to the east (graveyard) north end of the graveyard has the cameo - be careful, is dangerous to get in the way of the action there.

Enjoy.

The cutscene in SOU with Drogan was epic and sad for me at the same time. To me he was the man...er...Dwarf.

Other than Deekin, the NPCs that you could recruit were relatively one-dimensional, and in my case, a little of Deekin's company really went a very long way, so I mostly left him behind.

Even though I've only played SoU and HotU once, my instinct is to solo the Bioware campaigns, generally out of mindfulness of the party size vs. experience point issue. However, I did really enjoy Deekin and kept him with me the whole time. At some point in HotU, I realized that my PC was powerful enough and I enjoyed Deekin's banter enough to keep him at my side. I even kept the Shield Golem with me for a while and the ghostly henchman as well. (Sorry for the vagueness, but I'm not sure where 'spoiler' starts and stops.) It was a nice little crew for a while.

Not to give away any of the story, the shield guardian is a golem you can create in HotU at the Isle of the Maker.

Tis a shame, Vaa.  I felt the same thing, but at the end of every module.  Nowadays, I have found myself in the halls of Greyhawk, and I found such souls as yourself and others to strike up the sword and song, and we ride out across the plains of the Flanaess in search of glory and high adventure, and no matter what comes our way, we have a good time at the end of every night.  May you cross blades with one that you would call brother....and may you shine in battle together.

@MrZork: thank you. I haven't built it, so I didn't know that. Deekin has been with me throughout the entire adventure. In the first chapter I had Sharwyn (more because I met her immediately and I didn't know I can send her away and bring another one) and then Valen.

@Grizzled: can I also hope for Obsidian/Bioware/whoever to create another game with all previous henchmen? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease! I need Deekin!!!

Deekin plays the all important role of comedic relief or perhaps straight man - a'la Minsc (BG2), Polly (PoSC), etc. One thing the OC really lacked frankly though there were a few cute funny pop culture references. One thing some community mods do well others not so much.

He tends to be love or hate him. I fell into the love him category.

Try - Aielund Mod series - Dante the Ranger in 1 Robert Black 3 onwards.
Try - Darkness Over Daggerford - a little Gnome thief from Waterdeep

You can get your fix in strong number of  community mods - give a few of the top rated ones a try.

I felt the same way when they killed Sturm Brightblade in the Dragonlance series. Flint I accepted, though I cried...but Sturm...man I was bummed for days.

They should never kill an NPCs in a game... And another thing that I hate is when you spend a lot of time with companions, new adventure and... 1) you can't have them back or 2) they are there but they don't recognize you (ie: you are supposed to be another adventurer... even if you are using the same character!)

Is it a spoiler if I say that Deekin makes a (minor) reappearance in Obsidian's NWN2?

I bet there are also some custom modules that feature NPCs from the OCs but I don't know which and if they're any good. Might be a fitting question for the Modules forum.

Or, you could learn to use the toolset and create your own fan fiction about the characters you love for you and us otthers to enjoy.
;)

Can't the OHS Henchman System, 34* in my list, take care of that?

@Olivier: To say the truth, I played first NWN2 (well, just a piece, since my gpu broke, and I am waiting for it being substituted) and then HotU, just while I was waiting for the new gpu. So, for me it's not a spoiler!

@jmlzemaggo: it is a good suggestion, but my problem is not that I would like to have in my party that specific character just to "use" the features and abilities, but for having a "friend" to talk to. So I need dialogues, interactions and so on :-(

Well, I'm afraid there is only one solution for you, as suggested by Olivier.

Actually, this is for such a small kind of missing I started my worldwide most famous module author career some years ago.

You could become as renowned as myself, and maybe even more!

Since less wouldn't be possible.

Well, I am learning a lot for the Electron Toolset because I would like to mod NWN2. And having Deekin as a henchman is one of the thing I would like to see... But I need time, I think :-P

Haildodge's The Gods Themselves Trilogy continues the story of HotU and Deekin seems to play a part in it.

BUT it assumes you completed the evil path and chose to rule Cania. Up to you if you can imagine playing an evil PC or not.

What do you mean? Each time I read a "let's play" walkthrought, I always hate when they do evil characters...
