Dragon Age Favors the Rogue class ...

... at least it seems that way, when you're first starting the game.
I'm referring to, of course, all of those locked chests that you cannot seem to access in the orgins stories, Ostagar, Korcari Wilds and the Tower of Ismael if you happen to be playing a mage or warrior character. I played a rogue on my second character, so I'd forgotten what it was like from the first time, when I played a mage. But now all of those memories are rushing back, now that I'm playing an elven warrior who cannot pick those locks and won't have anyone capable of doing so until at least Lothering.
Ah, well. I just had to get that off my chest (pun intended).

The Lock Bash mod for the PC states that it usues code which was already in the game, but was not used in the final release. It is not perfect, but it does help save time and the feelings you are leaving loot.
Unfortunately, the console version (PS3, in this case) cannot be modded. Oh, well. I wish I didn't have to leave the loot behind; after all, I sell most of it for cold, hard cash.

The other reason it's nice to pick those locked chests and doors is the xp. When I first rolled a HNF warrior, there was almost a level worth of xp that I lost between the Origin and Ostagar for not being able to pick them. And Daveth can't pick locks.
From a post I have read, he can in the Camp. He actually has enough Cunning for the chests in Ostagar, but perhaps not in the Wilds. Just after Duncan pulls the team together and sends you to get the treaties & blood, re-explore the camp.

I tried, but never worked for me with any of the patches.

Rogues are fun, mages are fun, and all 3 classes are balanced and playable without being underpowered. But Warriors are the favored class.
Cailan's Armor, Warden Commander's Armor, Starfang, Blood Dragon Armor, Wade's Superior Dragonbone Plate, Duncan's Sword, Yusaris . . . Warriors were heavily favored before some of the DLCs gave you access to mage and rogue super-gear.

Gaining a rogue for your party in Lothering is a must, but the crap you get for being a rogue before that point really isn't any basis for saying the game favors rogues. I would not want to go through the entire game without a lock picker/pick pocketer - but you aren't missing anything in the origins.

I give you the armor... there is some very nice armor that can really only be utilized by warriors (unless someone pumps their rogue up full of uber-strength, which would be odd, but to each their own). But the bolded weapons... what's the strength you need to have on them? I ask because it's probably possible for a DW rogue to use them. I have a CEF DW rogue right now who is using Topsider's Honor for her main blade and the Beastman Dagger for the other hand. I just needed to pop a few extra points into strength than I'd originally intended in order to use the blade, but it's a nice combo. In theory, a rogue could do the same for Duncan's Sword and Starfang... unless those require massive strength like the armor does.
Anywhos, all three classes are fun and have their strengths and weaknesses. I do admit I favor rogues, though, just because I'm obsessed with picking my own locks.
P.S. There's also Duncan's Dagger, so not sure Duncan's Sword is a point in favor for warriors being "preferred". In fact, isn't he actually a DW rogue and not a DW warrior? Reading "The Calling" makes me think rogue, obviously, but I could be wrong. After all, Loghain was rather "pure rogue" in the beginning of "The Stolen Throne", but morphed into a S&S warrior by the end.

Daveth does not have deft hands. I think he is supposed to, though, as he has comments for picking locks and finding traps (found this out when I used a respec mod).
As someone once said on this board -- and it applies to every time I have tried to have Daveth open locked chests -- the only thing Daveth is capable of picking is his nose.

If you've got the Golems DLC and equip the amulet you get in your Origins game from it on Daveth, he can bump the locks in Ostagar. There's no amazing loot, though.

Duncan is indeed a DW rogue, and yes the Duncan's Sword and Dagger combo is meant as rogue gear.
Having said that, I have to admit a lot of the best gear seems to be designed with warriors in mind...
This is HILARIOUS. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/grin.png[/smilie]DragonRacer13 wrote...

Thank God for that amulet. It's SO irritating when you get the wolves with traps/darkspawn with traps random encounters early on, and Leliana doesn't have high enough cunning to disable the traps. There must easily be over 200XP in those encounters.Valentia X wrote...

Any class can get his quests, you just need one level of Stealing on your main character.

I have all of the DL content ... what's the amulet's name? I'll have to see if it's in my inventory (should be, I'd think) and remember that little tidbit of yours for a future playthrough.
