Hi, errybody!

I'm a noob to Baldur's Gate and DnD itself, and I've got a few questions for the wonderful BioWare Social community to answer for me.

1) If I have my entire party selected and I click on a hostile character (or click the weapon icon and click a friendly), will spellcasters cast spells, or will they just use their feeble melee?

2) How does xp work in Baldur's Gate?  Is it split between the party, or what?

3) Is there any way to talk to party members (like in KotOR, ME, JE, etc.)?

4) Are all weapons of the same type (morning star, dagger, bow, flail, etc.) the same?  Are there more advaned ones anywhere?

Those are just a few questions I had.  If you have any advice for beginners, tell me that too.
Soon all your secrets will be mine!

1) They'll use weapons. Spells need to be regarded carefully. If you set them an AI script, clicking on a hostile will override their AI scripts for a bit. AI scripts are largely useless, just fyi.

2) XP is divided between all current characters in the party, but it's not a problem. You'll certainly hit the XP cap for each individual game by the end with 6 characters. (I always managed to hit max level way before the end.)

3) No. Planescape: Torment, NwN and NwN2 had this feature, but this relies more on random banters and interjections. You may want to ask someone who knows about mods where to find more banter packs and such. You'll also be dragged into certain NPC quests which should satisfy your character development needs, for the most part.

4) Enchanted weapons are everywhere. Surprisingly enough one of the most painful weapons in the series is a quarterstaff. (If this were a 3e game that'd be unheard of.)

In general if you choose to attack a hostile character, everyone will attack with whatever weapon you have currently chosen for them, whether ranged or melee.

There are scripts available that will alter this. You choose the script that you want for each character. (Click on character record to the left of the screen and then on customise)

XP is split between your party members (This is not necessarily so in BG2).

in BG1 it is not really possible to talk to other party members unless mods (such as BG1 NPC Project) have been installed. In BG2 conversations between party members are a lot more common.

There are more advanced weapons available at a price, on dead bodies and in chests etc. Magical weapons will not break. Quite an improvement on ordinary weapons. Magical weapons and items have to be identified in order to know whether they are cursed or improved.

As a fellow noob, I've been playing for 12 hours now, still in the beginning dungeon, and let's just say, space bar is your best friend. Micromanage as much as possible. Didn't know your party members, once dead in battle, are permanently dead, lol.

I think you are comparing this to thing like kotor where nobody dies but "fall unconscious" If a portrait is greyed out they can be ressurected by a high lvl cleric or druid in your party  or pretty much any priest at a temple. If the portrait dissapear however they are indeed dead permanently unless you reload lol.

Not necessarily. If their portrait still shows on the right hand side of the screen - but greyed out - then if you pay a cleric (100gp for a level 1 NPC, 200gp for a level 2, etc. in BG1) they can be brought back to life. If the protrait is gone, then so is the NPC. Remember to pick up any of their equipment that you want to save for them, since they come back weak and bare handed.

Sweet.

The rest of that dungeon was hard with only one party member, lol.
