Yay another oe of those threads..... Posted Image  but really.....I ran a rogue tha had super high Dex around 42 or something....and extremely low Cun around 25 or so...

it was great not getting hit....but my attacks really sucked, and I could barely open any chests.....oh and I ran around wearing crappy light armor.....

So Dex.....for high defense and lower attack? Cun is higher attack lower defense?

Oh and what's strength requirement to wear light medium armor?

Let's try to separate the issues here. Let's forget about lockpicking for a while. You don't need your main character to do that anyway.

Now about armor. Neither cunning nor dex helps you wear heavier armor, so that's not really relevant here either.

About attack. Dex rogues have higher attack than cunning rogues. So that's completely off.

The real deal is that dex gives you dagger damage, attack rating and defense. Cunning gives you more damage (through Lethality, Assassin and Bard mainly) but doesn't give you any attack rating or defense (well, it gives you a low amount of attack through Song of Courage).

My 22 cunning, high dex rogue did just fine, did great damage too. You need to find good gear though, but all rogues do. +backstab damage is good, and good weapons are a must. I used The Rose's Thorn and The Edge.

Oh and by the way, 42 dex is not super high. Not even close. High dex rogues have much more than that. Maybe your attacks are bad because it's early in the game? Maybe you need better gear. Are you remembering to use Momentum and backstabbing people?

At Level 17, my Dexterity Rogue has 60 Dex (Plus nine from buffs from items) and 30 Cunning (Plus three from buffs from items), and with Momentum I get critical hits almost constant.

One of the beautiful things about Rogues is that they are not as Attribute dependant as a Warrior. High scores (ie; 70+) are simply not as needed.

For light armors, you want to get STR of 20+; heavy armor is STR of 38+. If you go higher in STR than Cunning, you may want to skip the Lethality tier.

Cunning of 22+ is needed for Stealth; 30+ for Deft Hands min/max approach. Much higher, and Lethality is recommended.

Willpower of 20-30; Magic and CON are left near base. DEX usually gets the rest.

The good thing about rogues is indeed that you can make nearly everything work. Strength, cunning, dex, they all add damage. Really the only thing to avoid is focusing on both strength and cunning at the same time.

The point of the high dex build in particular is to become unhittable by anything but special attacks. That does require a lot of dex. It's not the only way to go though, and currently I find high cunning, medium dex quite nice.

I do about 25 strength, 25 cunning, 15 will(Archer) and pour the rest into dex

If you are an archer rogue it is dexterity all the way. If you are a dual wielding rogue it is primarily dexterity in Origins but cunning in Awakening.

Once you get your dodge to high levels with talents and gear you don't need the extra defense provided by dexterity but cunning will greatly boost your damage output.

As for attack it seems that regardless of attributes characters in Origins are inherently inaccurate which doesn't apply to Awakening.

I respeced my dexterity based rogue from Origins to a cunning based rogue in Awakening and even though I now have a lower attack score my hit rate has gone up from 89% to 98%.

Both have their own perks, but I prefer going dex on my rogues - very hard to hit, high enough damage done by dual daggers, and you can use bows effectively when the situation demands for it. Cunning rogue are great as well due to the insane damage their backstabs deal (especially when going assassin/bard). If you import to awakening, dex rogue archers are just too powerful thanks to the accuracy line, I almost feel sorry for the enemy... almost :)
