I never really used pistols too much previously but I came across this.

Anyway I tried using the predator rather than the carnifex on my engineer that I just started, and I really like it. I had not used the carnifex to do prolonged sections of armoured enemies because of the ammo issues, but the predator had no such difficulty. As such I think I'm going to keep it as my main pistol in the future.

So, my question is what do others use and why?

I'm still keeping carnifex on squadmates because they don't have the ammo problem. I also don't have the phalanx.

The only problem I find with the Carnifex is its low ammo capacity, but since I use it in very few ocasions (scions, gunships, praetorian... ) that was never an issue.

To deal with "armored" sections playing an Engie, I rely on fireballs.

I've been using the phalanx lately, it has a slow rate of fire, but it's like having a scopeless walter wa 2000 for mid-range engagements, where the sniper scope gets in the way.

otherwise i'll go with predator for myself, and carnifex for squad. squad seems to squeeze off 3-5 rounds firing either one (noted from very unscientific observation).

also, the phalanx fires too slowly for the squad to use properly from my experience, I've been struggling to collect usable data to provide useful numbers to prove or disprove this hypothesis, but i'm closer.

Nah the Phalanx isn't a good squad weapon, the Carnifex is definitly better. However I love using the Phalanx myself, the precision aim is fantastic. It's pretty much become my favourite weapon in the game, because no other weapon other than a scoped sniper let's you pull off headshots (or legshots against some enemies) so reliably.

Yeah, that's one thing I noticed, the Phalanx is quite accurate once you get used to it's laser sight and it's fire rate.

Check out Sinosleep's look at the pistols. The Carnifex wins out by a hair.

well, it seems that we agree:D

I guess I was a tad vague with my first line on the phalanx

Early game on classes forced to pistol snipe I like the predator for it's higher ammo count, but once a sniping replacement has been made I switch over to either of the more powerful pistols like the carnifex or predator.

Since i dont have the Firepower DLC, I usually go with the Predator for its ammo count if I do not have other weapons to deal with Armored opponent. If I know that ammo will not be a problem, then I will use the Carnifex.

they all fire differently so whichever fire you like, take that one.

for me its the phalanx hands down. i couldnt care less about damage comparisons. the blue laser sight is the reason why i use the phalanx.

Carnifex works best if you've either got good aim (and for FPSers, like certain personal endowments regarding size), would not admit to being "bad", or judiciously use Adrenaline Rush to line up shots.

I've personally liked the Predator more, because if I'm forced to actually switch down (as a soldier), it means I need to put down fire right now and all my powers are on cooldown, including Adrenaline Rush. No input regarding DLC content yet as I've had issues getting some to work in my current game.

For me, it depends on the situation. As an infiltrator, I tend to use the Phalanx for its laser sights and precision at long range, but if I know I'm gonna be up-close and personal, I switch to the Carnifex. (The reaper IFF comes to mind here...) As a Vanguard, I tend to not use pistols, but I'll sometimes use the Predator or Phalanx to pistol-snipe annoying enemies.

Before getting the Phalanx, I used the Carnifex as a poor man's sniper. Now I take it along for lots of husks because of the better fire rate and use Phalanx for missions where I might need to snipe.

Use Carnifex if ammo is not a problem. If it is, use Predator. Simple.

I prefer the Predator for any class.

They're all comparable damage wise. Though I prefer the predator's higher rate of fire and ammo.

I use Carnifex, it just packs more of a punch. Its ammo problem isn't really a problem given i use my pistol primarily as a back up gun.

After some more testing and stuff, I think this is my pistols set up:
  • Adept - use predator until collector ship. Switch to carnifex after acquiring assault rifles
  • Engineer - use predator until collector ship. Switch to carnifex after acquiring assault rifles
  • Sentinel - use predator until collector ship. Switch to carnifex after acquiring assault rifles
  • Soldier - use carnifex
  • Vanguard - use predator
  • Infiltrator - use predator

I always go Carnifex. Although ammo is usually lower, you do have powers which you can use to take the enemies out, or at least incapacitate them long enough to get to different cover that has ammo supplies.

The Carnifex and Phalanx are basically the same, the difference being the laser sight. If you have the Phalanx, use the crap out of it. It's like a sniper rifle in pistol form, and it actually makes the visor useful for non-snipery classes.

The Carnifex is largely impractical if you have the Phalanx, but if you don't, it's best to hold off unless you have another bigger gun.

The Predator is arguably the most versitile. Shot for shot, it's weaker than the other two, but it has a higher rate of fire, more ammo, and it's damn useful when used in conjunction with freezey bullets.

As an adept, I find myself using the Predator more mainly for the ROF .
