EDIT: I just want to say how impressed i am with everybody developing this subject to the thread it is today.
Thank you for your replies - because your opinion counts![smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/cool.png[/smilie]

Also, to everybody who's coming to talk about how ME2 is a "shooter game that must remain so",
you guys really need to go see what's out there; I'm POSITIVE it will blow your mind... [smilie]../../../../images/forum/emoticons/whistling.png[/smilie]

in mass effect 2 (and mass effect as a whole) there are more guns
then you'll ever know what to do with. guns for every occasion.
but the one field where there's always room for improvment remains
melee combat. and that's another fertile ground to expand to in ME3.
Like stun rods that cause opponents to stop dead in their tracks (husk prods),
or maybe mass-effect imbued weapons that will send rivals flying (mass-pull events).
squad members could have unique melee weapons (Turian ceremonial blade?)
or that, like armor pieces, they might affect shepard's stats and status,
allowing a character to evolve in new directions.

swords are tools, just like weapons. they could be used in many ways for many purposes.
and in ME3, shepard will need any advantage he can get.

If enemies get that close to you (apart from husks on insanity), then you're playing the game wrong.

I'd prefer to see less melee than at present - playing through on insanity made me realise there's actually a half-decent cover shooter hidden away in ME2, though the game does it's best to sabotage it at every turn.

This topic has been brought up before. I think it can work if the tactical knife is implemented realistically, so we don't end up with a bunch of lightsabers:

Knife's point of impact moves with the aiming reticle.

Knife bypasses kinetic barriers.

Knife cannot bypass armor, but can harm health if it strikes armor plate seams.

Knife harms health directly against targets like varren.

As I recall, Kai Leng's knife was quite effective in the novel ME Retribution...

Maybe vanguards can chain melee attacks so after hitting them with the side of your gun, Shepard pulls out a knife and starts stabbing.

But nothing crazy.

agreed, but swings should be similar in nature to the new biotics-you should be able to set the arc
in which knife will swing (across, uppercut etc.)

Melee weapons are not "futuristic" enough for the Mass Effect universe. Better to revive ME1's kinetic exoskeleton armor upgrade, so Shep can break spines with one or two rifle butts.

Sounds like it could work,  just not some crazy lightsabre thing.
I like the idea of having the whole melee combo type stuff.

Thanks for making us Vanguards feel special :crying:

So what about that certain power the vanguard class has?

Using blades and that sort of dueling weapons is futile in ME universe and its more disadvantage than advantage especially if your enemies have kinetic barriers or biotic shields ( which most have ).Even today usage of daggers is low in military and mostly for survivability purposes ( like when you are in jungle and need to cut some plants or something, or place a tent ).ME is futuristic universe where most of races/species rely on technology rather than using melee weapons. They use it only for sport and duels.B)

Unless theres some stealth elements to ME3, a knife would be pointless since all enemies have a hard-on for Shepard when s/he is out of cover in the open.

This isnt halo :P, but I get what he means. But I mean, why would you need a knife as a vanguard? When you charge arent they isntantly killed once you do the shotgun-to-the-face move? But again, this isnt halo reach :3

No thanks, I don't want some middle age melee style combat to future science fiction game.

I can't see it being practical, even as a Vanguard.

I play vanguard and fight in melee range a lot but I think that Knife is a bad idea. It feels so cheap :P

Something like Powerfist or Chainsword (like in Warhammer 40k) would be preferred :devil:

if i cant kill someone with a sniper shot to the head, or a shotgun blast at point blank, i certanily dont want a friggin knife as an option.

even tho melee does a stupid amount of damage. why is my elbow more powerfull then my weapons or abilities?

While interesting, I think its never wise to bring a knife to a gunfight. Proverbially, or in this case, literally.
