Common sense says 'don't bring a knife to a gun fight' for a reason.
It's really stupid to attack enemies with edged weapons in sci-fi. I know BioWare did it in KOTOR and I know Star Trek routinely does it....but even then it was stupid. Early parts of KOTOR running into blaster fire while you charged slowly with a sword looked ridiculous.
Keep it a shooter. Knives can appear in cutscenes and maybe Interrupts but combat should remain ranged weapon based. ME2 made huge strides to improve combat and a knife would add nothing to it in ME3.

if i cant kill someone with a sniper shot to the head, or a shotgun blast at point blank, i certanily dont want a friggin knife as an option.
even tho melee does a stupid amount of damage. why is my elbow more powerfull then my weapons or abilities?
Bullets are stopped by shields. Shield VI doesn't react to the slower melee blows. This is actually written into the lore.
Wrex killed his father with a knife
Kahlee Sanders clubbed a Cerberus commando in ME Ascension
Kai Leng killed a few people with a knife in ME Retribution
Krogan melee attacks are known to be deadly
ME armor can be upgraded with kinetic- or combat exoskeletons

I don't just want a knife. I want melee. Melee is cool. It is fun.
You’ve got krogan charging at you full bore, getting up close, getting in your face. Then you hand me these AWESOME biotic powers – and I never get to go ninja on anyone with them? WTF.
I want biotic punches, biotic kicks, biotic grab-and-slams, I want to seize someone biotically, lift them up into the air, and hurl them thirty feet over the side of a building. I want to hurl people into other people. I want to become delighted at the sight of explosives tanks because it means I will be able to lift them and throw them at enemies.
I want a freaking arena in the Afterlife called Biotic Showdown where biotics fight for credits. And I want to participate.

And that's why stock shotguns are named after sword types.

I'll go for most of this^ the biotic mayhem part.
There's already a Colosseum type thingy on omega, maybe we'll get to compete on ME3.

Maybe vanguards can chain melee attacks so after hitting them with the side of your gun, Shepard pulls out a knife and starts stabbing.
But nothing crazy.

I hear there is a book as well where you hear his real name.
Wikipedia probably knows.
EDIT:
"Developers decided not to give Starkiller a name in the game, but the novelization gives his name as Galen Marek."

actually kinetic barriers don't engage unless a shot is detected, so melee can be used to BYPASS
heavy barriers. nice idea

dude if i want to pash things with a glowing stick in sci-fi or any stick for that matter i will go play one of my 35 star wars games (over exageration more like 20) Mass Effect was and is Supposed to be Psudo-Realistic Sci-Fi with decent Psudo scientific explanations that while realisticly probably can't occur sound like they could. Please do not kill one of the more probable sci-fi futures with insanely ridocnulous Mellee.... For the love of all sci-fi abandon this quest.
man i love sci-fi just as you and there is absolutely no reeason why cold weapons be excluded from
mass effect (they already appear in the novels). besides what is all that N7 course worth
if it's attendents don't excel in ALL forms of combat?

speaking of which, does anyone else think the katana (and all staring weapons) are really
underwhelmed?
