How about a really big hammer that a vanguard uses by making it really light so they can swing really fast then making heavy right before impact dealing massive damage.

It'd be like charge use hammer WATCH FOE FLY

well if you want knifes for meleeing with your soldier, then id like to be able to somewhat "fly" with my biotics as a vanguard. if theres knifes in the books, i know ive seen ssamara float and biotic slam someones face off, so they are equally relevant. almost ANYTHING should be possible by biotics, not just pushing and pulling someone. (thats a complaint, not "i want knifes, dude" melee is already overpowered, it does plenty of damage and is equally effective on a protected enemy as using heavy throw.)

its funny that knifes makes sense to you, while ripping off limbs, crushing skulls, or levitating for a few seconds sounds cool to me.

I think Shepard should get the option to just slam his rifle down and strangle the nearest person, be it friend or foe.

I think any melee weapons beyond combat knives and tasers would just feel out of place, especially if they just tossed them in the third game with no reasoning why they weren't in the other two.

And really, the current melee is plenty.

I want to see Wrex use this.  I really think the Krogan should have some sort of signature melee weapon.

Phantasy Star Online is really one of the few games I can think of with balanced melee and ranged weaponry, although they achieved that through creating a very unique combat system that basically wouldn't make sense in say, a shooter like mass effect.

Problem is we don't need like a whole new weapon class like stun rods or lightsabers that operate as a separate weapon. What I think we do need though is instead of delivering a elbow to the face shep whips out a knife and takes a few stabs or something, I'm open to the idea as ling as it's done well in the final game. Think of how the knife is used in halo reach, yes it's there and you can see it on your Spartan but it's only ever used in a certain way that's well implemented, it's not like you can kamikaze charge anything with it as it can only be used if criteria X is met. I think something like this could fit the game quite well.

come on dude, unless it's energy weapon like the one's in halo, or a light saber or something

Will someone ,please, pitch an idea of his own for a melee system?
we already went full circle several times on WHY melee will work,
i'm looking for ideas on HOW

Tbh, I like the way Melee works in Alpha Protocol. Except I would have loved to get more fine control in that game over wether I should pull out my knife or subdue opponents when making stealth attacks from melee. Without a stealth system in Me, though, that part of melee in AP can be overlooked and you can just look at the opportunity to string up to 5 attacks in a serie (specific moves seemed to be somewhat random between a set of moves), make a charging attack to knock down opponents and a 'get out of my face' attack that pushes an opponent back.

It seemed to provied plenty of things to do for any given situation and wasn't too complicated, nor did it make me feel I was lacking in any way in the melee area.

that's a nice approach, but we played DA2 and there's room for finishers or race specific attacks
(Thane might be helpful here, as a teammate specilising in HtH combat)

Think of a knife with a monomolecular blade made out of a biotic barrier. it would go through any armor and biotic barriers wouldn't trigger and thus wouldn't protect from it. I'm not saying make an entire combat class around melee weapons but give us the option to perform a cool execution move but pressing B or something when standing next to an opponent.

not bad but for god's sake without quicktime events. maybe button combos like in bayonetta or tekken or DMC

Why not just press [assigned melee button] to preform kill-move on targeted foe in close proximity? Sortof like the hidden blade in assassin's creed, but without the chance of enemy blocks (unless it's a boss fight)

How can the mechanics behind stealth/knife kills work? Pretty simple, given a situation like the stealth part of arrival, which is OPTIONAL to you run-n-gun enthusiasts, you can OPTIONALLY do something similar to Crysis 2, which is perform a knife kill only if you have the element of surprise. So if you prefer running and gunning, which the majority of ME3 will likely be regardless, having the option to perform a few knife kills here and there would be AMAZING and not take anything away from the ranged combat that we are already used to in the ME series.

Infiltrator and Vanguard should get melee weapons IMO, perhaps some kind of heated or electric blade designed to cut through armor.
Imagine it human, your playing as an Infiltrator, you spot a squad of batarians trying to kill your favorite squad made. You turn on your tactical cloak and advance slowly behind the batarians, you plunge your blade deep in their leader's skull and watch the brains leak.

I actually like the idea of certain classes getting melee weapons. Vanguard, soldier, and infiltrator should be the ones. Then give some kind of new power/ability to engineer, adept, and sentinel to balance it out. I firmly believe and will not sway from the idea that some sort of basic melee weapon/combat (outside of a rifle butt) should be incorporated in ME3.

How about a similar idea to Halo: reach's assassinations, for those who have no idea what I'm talking about:

put on the Kestrel armor and proceed to backhand anything you come across. Really, with that gear on you can one shot(or 2shot) a merc with a swift wack to the head, and they go sprawling.

Yes, a knife should be awesome for an infiltrator. Invis => backstab = awesome

Wouldnt it be cool if you could just grab someone? Use him as a body shield and then "pew pew" kill other guys, then snap his neck.
