"ALL HAIL THE MYSTERIOUS STRANGER!" (absolute worst stage name of all time, all time)

And listen to this darth_lopez fellow. Yes, I see you! I know your kind! The "realists"! Every time I want something you come along and find a way to take it from me with cries of realism! Oh, how I know thee.

I want melee combat! “Nope, nope, not realistic.”

I want to be able to change party members in cities! “No, that is not realistic.”

I want space battles! “No, no, there are any number of reasons why that is not realistic.”

I want bananas! Bananas now! “No, no, that is not realistic.”

I want male strippers in the Afterlife! "You shall never have it, it is not realistic."

Well screw your realism! It’s like, lame! It is so lame! It is the Fun Killer! It keeps me from everything I want! EVERYTHING.

Why not a repulsor ray like short range beam, whose damage would be upgraded with the rest of the armor equipment?
There are enough Iron man refferences in ME2 already, so why not the repulsors in ME3.

Well a couple of posts have pointed out that Melee Weapons could be effective against Kinect Barriers based on lore, what about Biotic Barriers?

I think it would be cool with better melee weapons, but as said earlier in this thread - it would be stupid in most cases to get too close to your enemies at times, especially at hardcore/Insanity. But at husks would be nice. Blast them with an assault rifle or shotgun, when you have to reload but there are still husks left, knife the rest down --> done!

Biotic barriers are the same as kinetic barriers (which are ARTIFICIAL BBs).
barriers, however, are sustained by the user, so if someone storms him with a blade
it could break his concetration. or he could focus the barrier. take tour pick.

I think it's pretty funny that people are claiming "Not realistic!!" or "Wouldn't work!!" in terms of something as basic as using a combat knife, whereas several characters seem to use them, namely two of which are actually party members: Tali and Zaeed, both of whom even have knives on their character models. Heck, I've seen the vids of his conversations, he even talks about getting a knife under a krogan's headplate and prying it off.

Anyone who says 'melee weapons don't belong in Mass Effect' obviously wasn't paying attention to the game itself. It doesn't have to be something huge or drastic, but I sure wouldn't complain if I got a simple enough hand-mounted weapon, or something held in off-hand while using my gun, in order to use. I mean, people insist that knives are a dumb idea, but they don't question the fact that pistol-whipping and rifle-butting is in there, even though that should technically do even less damage than a combat knife, AND it risks damaging your weapon? Yeah, now who isn't being realistic.

Not in actual gameplay, but it would be badass to see Tali pull out her knife in a dire situation and stick in an enemy's neck during a cut scene.

I think having a knife attached to the gun like a bayonet would be cool. It would basicly just make the melee more badass.

To be honest, you could easily just have a combat knife in one hand, a gun in the other, and then use your knife-hand to steady your weapon. Considering that it was a tactic for soldiers, especially with special forces during WWII and the Cold War, in order to be able to switch between a firefight and close-quarters, I don't see why a tried and true method like that would suddenly become obsoleted in combat training.

I. Want. More. Melee.

I don't just want a knife. I want melee. Melee is cool. It is fun.

You’ve got krogan charging at you full bore, getting up close, getting in your face. Then you hand me these AWESOME biotic powers – and I never get to go ninja on anyone with them? WTF.

I want biotic punches, biotic kicks, biotic grab-and-slams, I want to seize someone biotically, lift them up into the air, and hurl them thirty feet over the side of a building. I want to hurl people into other people. I want to become delighted at the sight of explosives tanks because it means I will be able to lift them and throw them at enemies.

I want a freaking arena in the Afterlife called Biotic Showdown where biotics fight for credits. And I want to participate.

Well, in the first game a charging Krogan was hardly a problem if you possess biotic powers, since sentinels, adepts and vanguards could use Throw (yes, it was a usefull power, did you know?).
Engineers have neural shock and soldiers/infiltrators immunity.

This is ME, not Street Fighter.

The argument of that video is voided by the Temple of Doom.

Combat knife for cloaked infiltrators... I can see (or not). I know the timing is awful with Reach just coming out... but people have brought up "assassinations" for ME before. Kasumi's Shadow Strike is close enough to this already... just add a knife and make it more visceral for Shepard.

I'm thinking chainsaws. We should add chainsaws to the guns.

Wouldn't mind melee being a snippet more interesting - a knife would probably be a bit more lethal than an elbow, after all - but nothing drastic.

This is of course purposefully neglecting the fact that a bullet is probably more lethal than both combined, but nevermind that :P
