Bringin' a Knife to ME3

Anyone play any game of the Halo series? there is a shooter with some melee, and those monkey things with their big sledgehammers are tough. But there is no need to copy because there are ME melee weapons that have been mentioned in passing that are effective in combat within the ME Universe.

Maybe done in a slightly less over the top way - monomolecular knives/bayonets seem to be the most logical way to go, but if Bioware want to include a mass effect powered super hammer then that's cool.

As a life long Warhammer 40000 player (a sci fi game were half of all combats are resolved via the use of a large hitty stick - often with a chainsaw attached) I thoroughly endorse this proposal.

I would like to be able to do stealth kill with a knife. I don't know about Hammers and Halberds and swords, because then it turns into Final Fantasy, and the last thing I need is a gunblade.
But yeah, being able to sneak up on people and kill them would be great, especially for Infiltrators. I suppose Vanguards could use swords and just charge into a group of enemies and start slicing and dicing.

Yes, having a krogan run at you with a spear is potentially cool. Having to have Commander Shepard armed with a knife run at a krogan armed with an assault rifle is less cool (not to mention potentially likely lethal). While it makes sense to have a limited amount of melee (such as the pistol whip) to drive off attackers who have come too close, it does not make sense in the long run to add an entire melee combat type in a game where the character specializes in ranged weapons.
Again, you are welcome to keep asking for a knife (or similar). It is up to Casey, Christina, Jesse, etc to add it or not. So we'll see what happens.

So now you not only want a knife, but a knife that can deflect bullets?
And there is a reason they started letting Jedi/Sith throw their lightsabers.

being too lazy to also bring a gun with them?Chris Priestly wrote...
Biotics are ranged weapons, so they go to my point.

Star Wars was designed from the ground up for melee combat (if you are not aware, it was based on an Akira Kurosawa samurai movie called the Dark Fortress and samurai use swords, so they kept the idea for Star Wars). Mass Effect was not designed for melee combat. Again, some is fine, but expecting a complete revision for ME3 may be a little unlikely.

But knives should do less damage than every gun in the game. While shields ignore slow moving objects, punches and knife strikes actually have to be pretty damn fast if you want them to hurt so shields should still work. Also the shield function is based on automatic reflex action to deflect the bullet. Nothing should stop someone form just activating the damn thing to stop the knife thrust manually. Also this should only be something to add if they have everything else covered. It is too niche of a part of the game to take away from other development IMO.

I'd be very happy to see Krogans really show off their marital prowess even if it's in a cut scene! They only one that gave any real trouble was on Therum and that's only if your a low level and or have no biotics in the squad, I'd even wait for the next game after ME3 for the mighty Krogan in action!

Although having a knife attached to Shepard's armor purely for aesthetic reasons would be awesome as well.

Shepard should just take some combat tips from Big Daddy

It can be implemented in the game to fight off those enemies that fight in close combat (Krogan, Husks, Bugs and so on). Because current "hit" is a bit boring. Would be nice if there was a different animation for it with a knife.
Also while using cloaking ability you can get in close range (for example Katsumi moves cloaked and do a backstab) so why can't Shep do a stab with a knife for instant kill?

Then what about the games like Halo. It is not a RPG and it is a FPS, but I think the concept is same here. You use range weapons at range and melee weapons in close combat. Even DA has both melee and range weapons and I almost forgot Gears of War, even that has some kind of melee weapons.
I am not saying that I am very earger to have melee weapons in ME but I think it is possible. Specialy for classes such as Vanguard.
