I've seen some who have had custom avatars, probably uploaded from their own computers. When/how can I do that?

Apparently I need to register my games to be able to have pictures from for instance my femshep as an Avatar. That sucks, because I didn't buy the game.

No, you don't. You can only have a picture of your Mass Effect 2 character if you set it as one yourself (By cropping a screenshot). All you need is the Dragon Age: Origins character creator, which is a free download from this website.
