My first play through is Alistair as my main tank. But by hearing almost everyone saying how bad he is *i find that he's quite ok with tanking*, i will wish to know who you considered is the best tank?

I usually dont like playing as main tank for my MC so i'm in serious need of a good tank. :)

If you set Alistair up with the right armor and skill set he makes a great tank.

Dog certainly is not a main-tank. He can take a hit, but he's primarily a dps off-tank.

Allister is the best pure tank companion. The only way to make a better tank is to make your main character a tank.

I would say Oghren, or Sten, I prefer Oghren for that purpose however, and hey... he's a Dwarf, it's basically his job, drink, women, and swinging axes and looking at limbs fly in a berserk rage, they're specialists for that.

Allister seems best so far, though I have not run into the dwarf Ohgren. Shale is good but eventually you get so many great armor and weapon sets you can trick out Allister to do more damage and have a higher AC.

But you have to get him the shield proficiency that make it impossible to flank him. Until he gets that he get swarmed too often.

How can you say Sten or Oghren are better than Ali? They are all warriors and can spec the same way...

Then i wonder why so many complain that Alistair is not a good tank. LOL

When i have him for my first play through, i already decide to make him a MT since i'm playing as a ranger.

So all the talents pts is only on Shield and try to learn the 2 Warrior talents which grabs aggro.

I just thought there's a better tank out there other then making a main character as a Tank.

Nope, he's the best becaue he already starts off with a bunch of shield talents.

The templar spec makes him good against spellcasters as well.

Shale is great, but once you get allister some really nice named gear he turns into a monster tank.

Loghain, he's champion specced, when coupled with reaver spec makes him great at grabbing aggro. even better than Alistar.

However, you don't get him until very late in the game.

Alistair and my PC (dual wield war) tanked just about everything. He would tank the big hard hitting guys and i would tank anything else :P

Alistair is my tank, and a fine one at that. Oghren died too much, in my opinion.

Shale is my preferred tank, though I haven't reached endgame, so I don't know if alistair will surpass him w/ good gear.

One thing that makes shale great is his ability to change "modes". He can tank, buff, aoe, or dps. Shale is definitely extremely versatile.

Jestert... SPOILER ALERT please!! Ugh... I'm only halfway through my first playthrough.

I agree that Alistair is the best tank. After being accustomed to using him as my only tank for the majority of the game, I switched to Shale and Oghren. They've both been getting torn apart. Oghren moreso than Shale, but still torn apart nonetheless. Actually... it's just Oghren that gets torn apart. Shale's only fallen once. He's fallen more than that, but the loss of Shale usually led to a party wipe.

never really tried Oghren. But i do intend to try him with my next play through. But unless i get him fast, otherwise he will auto level and the talents will be wasted on all the 2H skill.

Hmm.... i wonder if Arcane warrior can be a good tank with proper skill?

As others have said, Alistair simply due to the fact that he starts out with some good tank talents. Oghren, well I got him last and he was already 15 or so and his stats were too screwed to be of any use at all. Low Con for tanking and horrible Dex, couldn't hit anything. I'd give anything to be able to pick up companions without any talents.

Alistair by far - I really like Shale as a character, but he is NOT up to tanking the heavy hitting/large number fights.

His armor is WAY too low. He gets a good defense rating like Alistair - usually pretty close, but his terrible lack of armor means he gets hit SO much harder. Which is unfortunate since he's ridiculously good at pulling/grabbing aggro plus some of his unique abilities.

He just gets wrecked too easily and poor Wynne can't spam heal him fast enough in a heavy hitting fight. That being said, he's a hilarious party companion and well worth bringing along as a DPS.

@ Brisk - it's possible to change their talents up with the console codes if you're actually ok with that from a gameplay standpoint. I've not done it, but apparently you can. I too wish we had more control over initial NPC specs and I even dislike that when making a new character, we get points sometimes randomly assigned into talents. AKA human noble warrior getting a sword/board tanking talent right away w/o any choice in the matter.

Now if only there's a patch that allow us to pick up the character without them auto-spending the talents on skill.

Yup, you will reduce to eliminate the penalty when a mod get behind him. So you dont have to move him grab all aggro and find a wall to lean your back against it. :)
