I usually dont like playing as main tank for my MC so i'm in serious need of a good tank.
Who is the best "Tank" companion?

Allister is the best pure tank companion. The only way to make a better tank is to make your main character a tank.

But you have to get him the shield proficiency that make it impossible to flank him. Until he gets that he get swarmed too often.

When i have him for my first play through, i already decide to make him a MT since i'm playing as a ranger.
So all the talents pts is only on Shield and try to learn the 2 Warrior talents which grabs aggro.
I just thought there's a better tank out there other then making a main character as a Tank.

Then i wonder why so many complain that Alistair is not a good tank. LOL

Nope, he's the best becaue he already starts off with a bunch of shield talents.
The templar spec makes him good against spellcasters as well.
Shale is great, but once you get allister some really nice named gear he turns into a monster tank.

However, you don't get him until very late in the game.

One thing that makes shale great is his ability to change "modes". He can tank, buff, aoe, or dps. Shale is definitely extremely versatile.

I agree that Alistair is the best tank. After being accustomed to using him as my only tank for the majority of the game, I switched to Shale and Oghren. They've both been getting torn apart. Oghren moreso than Shale, but still torn apart nonetheless. Actually... it's just Oghren that gets torn apart. Shale's only fallen once. He's fallen more than that, but the loss of Shale usually led to a party wipe.

His armor is WAY too low. He gets a good defense rating like Alistair - usually pretty close, but his terrible lack of armor means he gets hit SO much harder. Which is unfortunate since he's ridiculously good at pulling/grabbing aggro plus some of his unique abilities.
He just gets wrecked too easily and poor Wynne can't spam heal him fast enough in a heavy hitting fight. That being said, he's a hilarious party companion and well worth bringing along as a DPS.
@ Brisk - it's possible to change their talents up with the console codes if you're actually ok with that from a gameplay standpoint. I've not done it, but apparently you can. I too wish we had more control over initial NPC specs and I even dislike that when making a new character, we get points sometimes randomly assigned into talents. AKA human noble warrior getting a sword/board tanking talent right away w/o any choice in the matter.

Allister seems best so far, though I have not run into the dwarf Ohgren. Shale is good but eventually you get so many great armor and weapon sets you can trick out Allister to do more damage and have a higher AC.
But you have to get him the shield proficiency that make it impossible to flank him. Until he gets that he get swarmed too often.
What do you mean by :"But you have to get him the shield proficiency that make it impossible to flank him."
Do you mean you ca not flank a shield user???
