Yup, you will reduce to eliminate the penalty when a mod get behind him. So you dont have to move him grab all aggro and find a wall to lean your back against it. :)

Allister seems best so far, though I have not run into the dwarf Ohgren. Shale is good but eventually you get so many great armor and weapon sets you can trick out Allister to do more damage and have a higher AC.

But you have to get him the shield proficiency that make it impossible to flank him. Until he gets that he get swarmed too often.

What do you mean by :"But you have to get him the shield proficiency that make it impossible to flank him."
Do you mean you ca not flank a shield user???

I do not understand a Word you said??? - "Yup. you will reduce to eliminate the penalty than a mod get behind him".... WHAT?

I feel Sten and Alister tank well together. But I recently got Oghren and find Sten and Oghren demolish people like no tommarow than when I had Alister and Sten tank.

I used Shale as a off tank. Hes good as long as he has a load of hit points which meant getting him above 40 Constitution.

I use my main as a warrior and he's effective either with two weapons or with a weapon and shield, but it took me till almost level 20 for him to work well that way.

I would say Oghren, or Sten, I prefer Oghren for that purpose however, and hey... he's a Dwarf, it's basically his job, drink, women, and swinging axes and looking at limbs fly in a berserk rage, they're specialists for that.

bad post

Shale has the hit points to be a tank.. But his armor lags behind Alisters when he gets to wear heavy and massive armor.. And Shales defense is laughable.

To me Shale is a jack of all trades and really can fit in all roles but not be the best in any of them.

I can't remember what shield talent it is, or if it's an activated ability, but one of them says, "Can no longer be flanked." It makes a big difference.

Thanks Soteria...does it say "Enemy" can no longer be flanked, or "Character"?

I built my team around flanking the enemy - I play a Rogue(Assassin to be).

I'll have to look this talent up....

OK it is 2 skills:
Shield Block - Practice fighting with a shield improves the character’s guard. Enemies can no longer flank the character on the shield-carrying side.

and

Shield Tactics- The character is proficient enough with a shield to defend from all angles, so that attackers no longer benefit from flanking strikes.

So you can still flank and enemy, they just can not Flank PC with one or both of those skills.

I misunderstood, I thought he meant one of the Sword/Shield skills would stop Rogue from using Flanking.
Sorry, tired and missread LOL

Alistair; he's a templar, so he's practically immune to magic, and you can give him enough strength by level 12 to wear some of the heaviest armors in the game. Not only that, but his starting skills are already geared toward sword-and-shield.

Sorry, didn't get enough sleep from playing DAO. LOL

I dont even know what i'm typing. Sorry.

What i mean to say is that you'll be able to reduce the penalty you get from some mob that is behind you.

By default, mod can backstab from behind your character to gain an advantage of crit.

With that Shield talent, you dont have to position yourself to put all enemy in front of your shield.

Is it plausable to have both alistair and the main character tank when you can only have one healer? I often find one of us will die unless we start chugging potions.

I used Allistair until Shale, and I never went back. Not only is Shale a better character (IMO), but he can tank better. I have read and heard that Allistair gets better when his gear is up to par and has certain talents (basically when he is at the end game) which is probably true, since my Shale never upgraded his gear past Orzammar.

In the end, I think Shale is a better early/mid game tank, but Allistair is superior in the end game or on big bosses. I plan on using Shale through all of my run throughs, as he is my favorite character and can do multiple roles. Right now I am using him as a tank once again (My first run through and my current run through are going to be more evil-oriented, just different difficulties and such)

Loghain, he's champion specced, when coupled with reaver spec makes him great at grabbing aggro. even better than Alistar.

However, you don't get him until very late in the game.

You are an idiot. A massive spoiler and you just throw it out casually.

Nothing in this topic indicated that such a spoiler would be given, or should be expected, but you gave one anyways.

Again, idiot.

yeah shale is the best by far, his very versatile aswell, especially for lure+ mage aoe nuking. Rock mode, taunts all the enemies, start casting an aoe, then change shale into the buff mode, so he gets uber spell resistance.

for pure tanking Alistair is the best.

he comes specced as a tank-warrior unlike sten and oghren who come specced in fighter-warrior builds.

while shale will easily outtank him in beginning, Alistair has better scalability due to the easily available massive armors. you also have the option of the Blood Dragon armor and the Juggernaut armor sets. these armors and shield skills mean that Alistair is the best tank in the game.

I'm gonna vote Alistair. Not only does he look the part, his skill set screams "I'm a tank!" Give him the right gear and you won't want anyone else as your main tank. I used Shale to take out Archers and let Alistair fight the Melee battles.

Alistair, always. If you program his combat tactics properly, he's astounding. Shale is also very good at it, I used Shale for the Deep Roads stuff so I could keep Oghren and Leliana with me.

BTW, 1 thing i find Shale annoying is whenever he moves, he's stomping the ground which can get pretty annoying after some time especially when you either set your speaker or headphones to a loud volume. LOL

Do you mean you ca not flank a shield user???

Once you get to a certain level of the Shield skill tree.. no. You cannot be flanked. It isn't automatic though, you have to run a sustained skill.

You were asking for spoilers reading a thread with a title like this.

"OMG you told me about a companion I haven't encountered in a thread about the best companion for a certain role! Please only discuss companions I currently have next time! :("
