My first playthrough (currently still playing through) is as a mage with Alistair tanking. He's quite capable of getting the job done. My guess is that those who are having trouble with him as tank don't know what they're doing. I've played a tank for every RPG and MMORPG I've ever played, so setting Alistair up was no problem.

Second playthrough I'm going to be the tank. =)

BTW, 1 thing i find Shale annoying is whenever he moves, he's stomping the ground which can get pretty annoying after some time especially when you either set your speaker or headphones to a loud volume. LOL

Hmmm. I actually like him for the same reason. I like all of the running sounds for the characters and their armor.

You were asking for spoilers reading a thread with a title like this.

Regardless of what was written, the simple fact of the matter is that this is the general discussion forum and spoilers of any kind are not allowed here.

I found Sten was a better tank in one of the boss battles because his "Indominable" talent makes him resist all stun/knockback effects. Meanwhile alistair seemed to be laying on the ground more than fighting.

Thanks for spoiling it.

You are complaining about a spoiler in a thread labelled "Who is the best "Tank" compainion"?
Of course there are going to be spoilers, essentially all the other characters in the game are some form of spoilers.
Besides its not like he is a guaranteed character either.  As with any game, things only happen if the stars align just right in the dialog tree :)

With Alistair I was getting mauled, and then Sten came along. The key difference between them is that not only does Sten have greater strength and so can wear all the best armours off the bat, but he does incredible damage with a good 2H weapon. Alistair's only good at soaking up damage if there's someone else about to do the killing for him.

At endgame, assuming blood dragon armor and maxed stoneheart:

They have comparable HP.
Shale can pull more reliably, has much better resistances, and is better at stunning.
Alistair has more armor, much more defense, and can't be flanked or backstabbed.

Shale is better against bosses because they tend to try his resistances more, his better pulling is more important against something that can splatter a mage after switching focus for only a few seconds, and his lower defense doesn't matter because they just plain don't miss anyone. He's more reliable at buying your other characters a few turns against a swarm thanks to his stunning, but your other guys better be good at killing because Alistair can take 1 damage from these guys and Shale can't - he'll die eventually.

It really depends what the rest of your party is good at, in short.

Also worth noting how well Shale's resists work vs friendly fire. There's no need to force field him in an inferno if he's using small and large flawless fire crystals. Load him up with nature crystals and start popping virulent walking bombs around him- he'll resist most of the damage, and his health is so enormous that he'll still have well over half of it left when the genlocks and hurlocks stop twitching and exploding.

the only real draw back is having neither knockdown immunity, nor flanking immunity. it's possible he's immune to petrify (would make sense) but I've yet to see an enemy try to cast it against me. Without some additional defensive utility he can be a little more situational than any of the other warriors, and you're more and more forced to fall back on "but he has great flexibility" as validation, and that just means pumping up one of his other ability lines so that he's still good when he can't tank. I still love my flaming meteor (fire weapons+Shale). It would be interesting if the fire and ice weapons abilities became damage shields on Shale, possibly TK weapons an armor buff?. if every enemy who hit him took a couple points of fire or cold damage from it.... it wouldn't solve the defensive issue exactly, but "he puts out better damage while tanking than the others do" would be a better validation for using him as a tank than "he can do something that isn't tanking pretty good too."  Being that Shale's very nature warps and affects magic around him, it wouldn't be unbelievable to say "weapon enchanting magic works differently on him", or even specify just when stoneheart is active.

I also assume that no matter how late in the game I get, I'll never find crystals with rune slots in them.  not a deal breaker exactly, but it would be nice.

I found Glyph of Repulsion to be the best tank...

...besides cheesing the glyph through most of the game, my only tank was my main character which was a berserker/reaver with two handed talents. Never really had any trouble with both Wynne and Morrigan having mass crowd control and heals.

My first run through and I'm the MT. Alistair seemed fine while I had him (I am now using the 3 women and myself as my party) so second run through I may use him or perhaps Shale as the MT and I'm thinking about rolling an Arcane Warrior. Something about being able to soften mobs up with a fireball then bashing them in the face with my shield right after really appeals to me!

Yeah, but to just blurt out that one of the main villains of the game becomes a player character?  That's definitely beyond a typical spoiler.  And as to the argument that any character could be considered a spoiler before you meet them... Yeah, that may be true, but you didn't know them AT ALL before you met them, and they relatively quickly became a player character.  They weren't a main villain.

Thank you for the massive spoiler before I was halfway through the game.  This isn't the spoiler forum.

I think Shale is a better tank because :

For me Dex/Defense is irrelevant, you will get hit when you're tanking, especially against bosses (and I'm playing in hard mode). So it doesn't bother me that Shale has no defense.

Allistair does have better armor, and in theory, armor is better than hp's (you need less heals). But:

- To get the best armors, you need points in strenght, so that means less HP or stamina (but I guess that's ok if you also like your tank to do some dps, but I don't : I'm here for that :P)

- Armor only protects against physical attacks (but it is true that, as a templar, allistair can get some pretty good spell resistance, so I'd say it's a draw on this point).

- I guess bosses have a great penetration armor (but I don't really have any proof): in this case armor would be less interesting than HP.

And I'm not saying that Allistair is better against weak ennemies : indeed his armor will be more effective, but he has only one AoE stun if you max champion spec, when Shale has two, balancing this problem against swarms.

Moreover, Shale is much more effective for aggro management : 4 of his skills are directly affecting his threat, Allistair only has two.

Finally, you can get shale's resitances really high, which is usefull against some bosses or for AoE (you can get Allistair's resistances reallly high too, but you have to change is whole equipement everytime...).

I also like the Stone Aura (?) skill, making ranged fights so easier.

But that's just my opinion, I guess it also depends on your party... I feel like for a ranged/mage party Shale's really a good choice.

And that was one of the worst spoil ever, although predictable (oh but no, is just telling that the main villain you fight for 60+ hours is joining your party at the end, and it's a topic about your party, so it's your fault... even if that were true, it's common courtesy to warn people, I can't imagine he didn't do it on purpose).

I'm using Alister and he has really improved once I added the third sheild defense talent. The one that prevents knockdowns. The only problem with Alister is he is a bit slow developing due to his strength. I have all these cool armors but can't wear them yet.

With my other character, which is a dwarf warrior, has Sten with him tanking seems to work out better in the start.

You are an idiot. A massive spoiler and you just throw it out casually.

Nothing in this topic indicated that such a spoiler would be given, or should be expected, but you gave one anyways.

Again, idiot.

I found Shale to be the best as he aggros things more easily and seems more resilient but maybe I'm just not good at making Alistair a tank.

Later I discovered I didn't really need a tank with three melee DPS and a mage but that's maybe not wise for a first playthrough.

I prefer Alistair for mobs, and Shale for single, stronger targets.
And on a side note, I'd like to add....Dexterity Tank=Win
