This is actually a good marketing slogan. Sounds awesome.

I just watched 300 again. The visual style of the end credits, the Spartans, the film is clearly an inspiration for both Origins and DA2. 300 is highly stylized with enhanced realism and has amazing battle scenes. Being able to fight like the Spartans in 300 would be nothing but awesome in DA2.

But then I look at the gameplay videos. Yes, they are exaggerated. But the abilities and animations seen in the vids are actually in the game. That's what it does look like. Perhaps not at level 1, but later on at higher levels, for sure. Warriors and Rogues move at lightspeed like Flash, teleport and leap around with little regard to physics, and wield oversized weapons that look fake without proper mass. Animations look like they are missing several frames. The combat is much closer to anime than the enhanced realism of 300, unfortunately.

I know the marketing slogan is just that - marketing. It is not a literal promise how the game will look and play. But in this case, I really would want to fight like a Spartan. A reality enhanced but flesh and blood Spartan and not the dragonballz version.

A great RPG immerses the player in the story and the characters. To achieve that the gameplay has to be based on realism. The characters have to be believable. That realism can be enchanced so that it will look awesome in a game or a movie. 300 shows this as the movie is both believable and awesome. But from what I've seen DA2 is so much beyond enhanced realism it seems very immersion breaking.

I have to say I enjoy action games quite a bit and am a big fan of Ninja Gaiden, Assassins Creed etc.. I'm sure the combat in DA2 plays great too, but it just might be in the wrong game.

I truly hope I am wrong.

Please, praising 300 for its realism is silly.

Enhanced realism. You even bolded the word yourself.

Which part of the battle scenes would you describe as unrealistic?

Originally it was going to be "Think like a general, play like a Trojan" but we didn't want to have to animate a marching band each time you scored a touchdown.

Fans of college football are chuckling to themselves now.

Europeans and others are scratching their heads.

Can we take this as confirmation that a marching band follows Hawke around in the exaggerated narrative portions of the story?  :D

I was thinking of condoms, and wondered why no marching bands ever show up when I "score a touchdown".

It was never about realism the way you think. It' about graphics and anime style of realism.

I think this little video makes the point.

Sertain graphical style can leave sertain impression, what can conflicting players impression so far what the Dragon Age game world is in mind of player. So, when player thinks 300, then see the video what I showed as example, there is conflict. When I look DA2, I get feeling like between 300 and this little video. What isn't how I feel Dragon Age world should be in my mind. I would like that feeling to be more 300 or the new Prince of the Persian movie, if game need to be more acrobatic and action related.

After playing DAO and you hear this: "Think like a general - fight like a Spartan?"

What comes in your mind as graphical and anime style?

In retrospect, Evil Chris, I don't think the Europeans are scratching their heads.

Maybe someplace else.

I had the opposite reaction to that slogan. It made me want to bang my head into my keyboard repeatedly, but I made do with some serious eyerolling and mockery.

It's marketing. You'll hear it over 9000 more times, just like how we heard ME2 was the "DARK SECOND ACT" of Mass Effect a bajillion times.

I just watched the DA2 Destiny trailer again.

The Hawke/Qunari fight is awesome. I wish the actual gameplay would look more like that. I don't mean the gameplay should be of cinematic quality but the overall style should be more down to earth. Even though the Hawke in the Destiny trailer is a mage, he looks far less magical than the warriors and rogues of the gameplay videos. No breaking the physical reality but bending it just a little to make things look more impressive. Blocking, dodging, trying not to get hit instead of just randomly bouncing around with crazy vfx like a ninja.

I wish the "non-exaggerated" gameplay will this time include more dodging and blocking instead of just standing there trading blows like in Origins, steadily depleting eachothers HP and drinking potions. An epic duel needs to look better than two warriors taking turns to hit eachother and quaff down potions.

Blocking and dodging won't be heavily featured in a game so long as you have HP featured in any meaningful way. To get dodging and blocking involved, you need an entirely new combat system.

Wasn't the NWN "dance of death" a result of blocking and dodging animations?

I guess we should ask which looks more impressive.. a fight with lots of dodging and blocking, grunting, metal clashing and sparks etc... or warriors trading hits and steadily depleting each others HP pools, and PCs drinking potions?

The game isn't out for 5 months still, they have time to make combat look and feel awesome. A lot could be accomplished by simply tweaking numbers (HP's, armor / damage, hit / miss / block chances) and adding animations for blocking / dodging and glancing blows against heavier armor.

Of course I'm using Origins more as a reference since we are yet to see the "real" gameplay of DA2. I'm just thinking a mere speed increase over Origins isn't enough to make DA2 combat as awesome as it could be, potentially. They'd have to address the "standing still trading hits" issue and the absurd potion drinking.

How come no one ever nitpicks the first half of that slogan? You're not thinking like a general. Well maybe a general of Sealand or a similarly sized nation.

Anyway you all know what is meant by that line. If you pull some random Joe off the street and ask him if he wants to play a game where you can "think like a general, fight like a spartan/ninja", he'll probably say "hell yeah that sounds awesome." And that's really the only purpose of a line like that. Historical realities of warfare are a non-issue.

I want to fight like a gladiator: arms and legs for cripples to toy with your enemy and put on more entertainment, stomach and chest for a slow kill for growing boredom, and neck and heart for mutiliation for a quick and amazing finish.

I seem to recall a little birdy saying that the combat video released is Varric's exaggerated retelling of a battle to make hawke seem totally badass.

For those who are upset, I would honestly wait until we see new footage. Don't go assuming things right off the bat.

EDIT: Oopsie, deleted my original post on the actual topic at hand, lmao.
...I would always like to fight like a spartan. I think the only reason for using "spartan" is for imagery of power, speed, brutality, and blood, not to be mainstream and cheesy.

Even though it is, just a little bit, that's okay, because cheesy can be kind of delicious. :P

My first thought had to deal with another entirely different type of trojan but the marching band and touchdown got that dirty thought out of my mind.

No serious historian takes 300 with a grain of salt. It's very entertaining but gets all the facts wrong. :) There was nothing realistic about the combat depicted.

Guess someone missed the end credits when said 'Based on a comic...'

I'm being a dick I know  sorry, but yeah it was based on a comic, guess that's why it was the way it was. I just wish I watched it in theaters, I can imagine the amount of woman who watched that movie for just one thing... :P
