Can I have the option to dress my male followers like 300-style Spartans, though? Mike, make it happen! *prepares the oil*

This is actually a good marketing slogan. Sounds awesome.

I just watched 300 again. The visual style of the end credits, the Spartans, the film is clearly an inspiration for both Origins and DA2. 300 is highly stylized with enhanced realism and has amazing battle scenes. Being able to fight like the Spartans in 300 would be nothing but awesome in DA2.

But then I look at the gameplay videos. Yes, they are exaggerated. But the abilities and animations seen in the vids are actually in the game. That's what it does look like. Perhaps not at level 1, but later on at higher levels, for sure. Warriors and Rogues move at lightspeed like Flash, teleport and leap around with little regard to physics, and wield oversized weapons that look fake without proper mass. Animations look like they are missing several frames. The combat is much closer to anime than the enhanced realism of 300, unfortunately.

I know the marketing slogan is just that - marketing. It is not a literal promise how the game will look and play. But in this case, I really would want to fight like a Spartan. A reality enhanced but flesh and blood Spartan and not the dragonballz version.

A great RPG immerses the player in the story and the characters. To achieve that the gameplay has to be based on realism. The characters have to be believable. That realism can be enchanced so that it will look awesome in a game or a movie. 300 shows this as the movie is both believable and awesome. But from what I've seen DA2 is so much beyond enhanced realism it seems very immersion breaking.

I have to say I enjoy action games quite a bit and am a big fan of Ninja Gaiden, Assassins Creed etc.. I'm sure the combat in DA2 plays great too, but it just might be in the wrong game.

I truly hope I am wrong.

Please, praising 300 for its realism is silly.

Enhanced realism. You even bolded the word yourself.

Which part of the battle scenes would you describe as unrealistic?

My mistake. I didn't realize that Enhanced meant over-the-top and un-(realistic).

From what we've seen of videos and what I know of DA:O mechanics it's more like "think like a sergeant, fight like a gladiator."

Spartans, you know, had battle lines and used the phalanx.

And Generals typically command more than 3 soldiers at a time.

Pretty much but it doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Three people doesn't even qualify as a squad - more like a fire team. That's corporal level stuff right there.

Yeah I wasn't quite sure what rank commanded a fireteam as I'm not in the military personally and come from a family of Coasties, so I just picked one.  It's definitely very low ranking non-com level of responsibility.

That being said, the Warden for example often had to make strategic decisions that a non-com wouldn't ever make, so maybe the General part of their marketing refers to greater plot decisions like how the Warden built an army and then eventually "led" it in at least some vague sense.

It terms of "Fight like a Spartan" rather than the uniform formations, it may have been speaking more to something like this:

ferocious and unyielding.

And as for something being historically inaccurate and annoying to historians... whats new?  They never claimed 300 was a documentary.

On that front - as someone who loves history - I didn't dislike 300 as it was what it was.  I would have preferred a different movie though, which is different than criticizing it for being what it's not.  But that's off topic.

If they wanted to get across the concept of ferocity there's so many historic options that it's pointless the list them all.

But you're probably right, the use of the word "spartan" is almost certainly a marketing ploy to link the game to 300.

But fun fact, if the army at Ostagar used 300's phalanx formation they would have lived. Was I the only person who saw the bottle neck they abandoned? Hell even in Kingdon of Heaven Balian used the choke point of "win". That always makes me mad when I play through again and have to watch them run out and meet the enemy in a field. I just keep hoping that time they'll stay put and destroy.

I think they Spartans fought in a phalanx formation for about five minutes in 300 - during the initial carge. After that it was "let's run around in bright red capes and speedos and impale the **** out of things", usually as individuals. Hoplites wore full bronze plate armor from head to toe and basically never, ever broke formation willingly.

I enjoyed 300, but it's got no place in a game that wants to be at least partially grounded in reality.

Well I'm just saying even in warfare today you don't charge a bridge
where the enemy is entrenched or walk into a hallway where the enemy
is, this is called "the fatal funnel" because you are funneling death
straight to you. It's a great way to break down numbers and get quick kills. That mountain pass they were in was perfect so yeah, still sad.

It's probably the most famous example of a force multiplier of all time.

There's also the Battle of Stirling Bridge, made famous for having been re-enacted in the movie Braveheart without the bridge.

I am offended, these men are being treated as sex objects. CGI abs in 300 are unrealistic, wearing no shirt is offensive, everything about them is unrealistic

I can't possibly watch 300 without annoying everyone around me with a "you know, in real life" anecdote every 3 seconds but even I know it was a bloody aesthetic retelling of what happened as if it was being shared as a story around a campfire by other Spartans describing how cool it was.

Except for the lack of formations bit. Spartans used to consider leaving the formation to go for so some spectacular kill as particularly dishonorable as it put the whole unit in jeopardy by hurting cohesion.

The lesson? Um, don't watch 300 with me.

And it is. Its a catch all marketing phrase. 300 and Spartans are freesh in the collective memory of people. Known as excellent up in your face asskickingfighters. (off topic but the phalanx really played a minor role in that movie. Mentioned once and I think its only really shown once. Troy I felt had a much better depiction of the Phalanx).
Just like saying General gives a better idea that you are in command of a fighting force.

Ugh. 300 was a melodrama begging to be spoofed. Is that what DA2 aspires to?
