Now, about Xanos -- he is a jerk, but I do crack up at some of his lines. Some day I'll play a character with his voiceset, I think.

Although without a strong fighter character to team up with it can be hard on the weaker (weaker as in being able to take a beating) classes, but each henchman is very unique and not typical making them, and SOU, much more interesting, atleast in my opinion.

you around, recharges your magic items, and has a decent merchant
store for this chapter in your life. His usefulness makes him one of my favorites.
I also quite liked Ashtara in Undrentide. He at first comes across as
a big scaly meany when he enslaves you, but he's really probably the
nicest Asabi you will ever meet.

I like an ogre who is proactive when it comes to love.

I think npc bards are pretty useless in combat - whenever I take Deekin anywhere, he just gets himself killed during the first round or two and then I'm on my own. Dorna is tough and dependable in combat. Her sneak attacks have saved mine and my animal summon's butts more times than I can count.
So my final vote goes to Dorna.

'cause Deekin could be a real tough cookie as a well managed and trained bard.

Just out of my curiosity, do you play with the regular AI, BelgarathMTH?

Sorry this reply took so long - I didn't see the new post. I just figured out how to click on my forum portrait to go straight to a list of every topic I've posted in.
I've been playing this go-round with Tony_K's AI installed. My main problem with Deekin is that he doesn't do traps and locks. I do see how with Tony_K's ability to tell him to buff himself pre-combat and order him to sing Bardsong on command, he could be useful.
I just don't want to give up Dorna's traps-and-locks knowhow plus her toughness in combat, though.
I really wish I could directly manage levelups like in NWN2. Then I could cross-train Deekin to have some thieving ability. Plus, I could have all the companions take useful feats instead of the irrelevant, useless, lame-brained stuff they take by default and that you can't do anything about.
And I really, really wish I could take direct control of them and manage their action queues the way we can in NWN2 and Baldur's Gate!

Deekin is still my favorite, though. I'll admit, Dorna is handy, but I played SoU as a wizard who started with a level of rogue to survive some soloing, so the henchies are mostly along for fun, and it's hard to beat Deekin on that count.

Definitely one of the most interesting NPCs in my opinion (one of the reasons I brought her back for my post-HotU module).

I always wished that Haniah Dales the gal running the village after the mayor got drunk could have been more of a love interest in the story. She could have been and should have been much more then she was!
She was my favorite NPC in SoU, even if I was left feeling short changed. If we could have shared a couple bottles of wine and a nice meal together... I'd have had something nice to remember about SoU.

As for the others...I've always been kinda partial to Dorna. Dorna was a little more... personal, i guess is the word. like
all the henchmen in SoU, she's better when trainned in their secondarly
class exclusively. As a Henchmen i think she was the best written.
Xanos...well he just has issues. honestly though he's a waste when leveled as a sorceror. . .He's not nearly as much of a liability when leveled purely as a Barbarian, which makes for a much easier time as a spellcaster. As a Henchmen...he more then boarders arrogent, so i usually leave him unless i'm desperate for a bit of extra muscle.
Deekin is nice when trainned as rogue...certainly much more useful in
combat then he normally otherwise is. was very dissappointed when he
didn't have rogue as a level-up option in HotU. Generally.... he annoys me. . .but he's a henchmen you can't really go wrong with...provided you spend more on equipment for him then yourself. honestly he was much better written in HotU, and certainly more entertainning.
@CalSailX
I agree, Haniah Dales was kinda a waste of potential, and could have been interesting to have along...on the other hand though.. i'm sure Hilltop would just fall apart if she ran off with you instead
