Hawke's "armor"

Of course, people figured out rather fast that a curved armor is a lot better at deflecting blows and arrows, hence why no armor I know off has spikes.
Hawkes armor is not the most practical one - but I wouldn't go so far to label it completely unrealistic. Something similar might be used by someone who cannot afford anything better. altouhg the spikes...yikes.

I personally like to look at Swiss Pikemen in the 14th century. They usually worse a metal skullcap and codpiece and that was it. They could protect their torso, so armour was not as necessary. Cavalry in the 30 Years' War worre helmets and a reduced shoulder and chest guard. Legs were exposed but not vital, and the horse's head protected other vital areas. No-one is claiming that fantasy needs to follow suit, but the logic behind these developments applies to fantasy worlds as well is all I'm saying.

You forgot to mention the 10ft pikes they were carrying and the formations they used, its a much different story if you're carrying a sword half that length without the help of your comrades. Without armor protecting your legs and arms you are dead in close quarter combat.
Arms and legs get hit more often than chest and the vital parts in close quarter combat, one blow to the right arm and you can't wield your weapon anymore.

Granted. Off-hand thigh tends to be the most vulnerable spot in my experience (for a swordsman without shield) as it's hardest to angle the sword around to defend it. My point was more that this was the most minimal armour I could conceive of. I realize that Hawke is not wearing a helmet cause flowing hair looks better, but protecting your head should be the first order of business. Ask any boxer.

Was it confirmed that this is not a special "exageration only" armour for Hawke? If you look at other screenshots, where Hawke is wearing a different set of armour, it is far more realistic and reasonable leather versus fur beefcake Hawke.
I'm sure early game Hawke won't be wearing armour like that. You have to get pretty high level before you get to wear armour that looks that silly

this is not the history channal, this is a V I D E O G A M E, good grief, you things would foam at the mouth in some ren-fest psychosis if you ever played a jrpg "that spikey blonde hair is impossible and how can he swing a steel girder on a handle?! mind...exploding!!"
i've never seen a group of things so completely unaware of the concept "suspend disbelief" i mean wow, just wow....

Suspension of disbelief only goes so far. There is such a thing called fantastic realism. If it's established that on Thedas, people's brains are in their butts, there's less of a point in protecting their heads. But as long as they need brains and brains are situated in heads, helmets are a good idea. It has not so much to do with emulating history as the principles that historically lead to the development of certain types of armour still applying in the DA setting unless stipulated otherwise.

I usually don't play JRPGs..did a few, but mostly comedic ones. The overlbown style works there, sicne the atmosphere itself wasn't serious.
Also, don't go telling me what to want from MY video game experience.
As far as I'm concerend, you can adore whacking yourself in the balls with a hammer. Don't assume I'm crazy for not wanting to share the experience.
Fatasy is not carte balnche to do anything...or else, we could do things liek this:

I not sure about this, but it may be related to varric or cassandras storytelling, varric could be exaggerating on his awesomeness.
That was a good point! He could just be embellishing too much, and when the flashback ends there is our boy Hawke sitting by the fire in his tin suit, looking like "insert fav armor wearing character here".

Who cares if it's not practical? It looks cool.
It looks kind of cool, but then I realize it's basically JRPG type clothing with more fur.

The problem with Dragon Age being dumbed down a la Mass Effect is that Mass Effect itself is being dumbed down to the Gears of War level.

It isn't the only armor.

As in "Inventory item" it isn't the only armor or "Uncustomizable with no removable helmet Cerberus/Collector/Etc armor" isn't only armor?

I whole heartily second that... those hats or cowls whatever you want to call them... please....

It is interesting how different views can be. A lot here consider the armor Hawke is wearing in the preview "cool". For me it is the epitome of "uncool". Like 500° Fahrenheit. For me, Effort is cool. That black armor from Awakening is cool. Spikes and weird dangling triangles- nope.
