I did a search on the forums and couldnt find anything related to this, but ive seen a few posts on other forums relating to different versions of ME2 (steam games in particular) with save game issues.

My problem is this...

I bought the collectors edition of ME2 recently and I've completed it with a newly made character.

I imported my ME1 characters using the configure utility - no problem!  I can start a game from my ME1 save game files.

The problem is that when I try to load a game, it doesnt let me because the Load Game menu is empty.  I mean theres NOTHING on it!  There are no save games in the list, just 2 buttons to "switch career" and "delete career".

The wierd thing is that I can resume a game in progress, but it loads the completed game data and not my new (old ME1) character I imported.

The save games are being stored in a folder called "BioWare" in my documents folder, which is on my D: drive (so... "D:\\\\BioWare\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\Save").

In this folder there are 23 save game files ("Save_00xx.pcsav" where xx is the number of the save game).  They are all dated from when I first installed
the game till yesterdays date.

There is also a "Autosave.pcsav" (dated today) and a "ChapterSave.pcsav" file (which is dated
yesterday).

The Autosave file has a time stamp from this morning, when I was playing with my completed character.  I have tried to move the 23 save game files to another folder while I tested the save game issue, and sure enough, it still loaded the old data.  If I rename the Autosave file, it loads an older save game file, so I am pretty sure these are the live files.

None of the save games I did with my imported character show up. I had played through till I reached Omega, right at the start of the missions, so I'm sure there were some autosaves and I know I physically saved the game before I quit earlier, but I cant locate them to fool ME2 to load the right save game, and I cant load them manually since nothing appears in the list.

I reckon theres something wrong with the game engine myself.  The fact is that it isnt showing anything on the load game menu.

Anyone have any idea what happened?  Am I the only person to have this problem?

Yep. ME2's known to have issues with a relocated My Documents folder. Especially if there is no actual My Documents folder, but it's instead been pointed to a partition's top directory.

I'm afraid the only thing I can recommend is moving your My Documents structure so that it is all under an actual folder (D:\\\\My Documents\\\\). Not a guaranteed fix, but it has worked in some cases before.

Nope, no dice there im afraid.  I created a "My Documents" folder and copied the bioware folder into it, then redirected the systems "My Documents" path to the new folder, but i STILL get nothing in the load screen.

I took a screen dump.  this is what I see...

Image IPB

as you can see, there's NOTHING there!

As an interesting experiment, I restored windows default "My Documents" location and copied the BioWare folder into it. The only thing it now does differently id that it AUTOMATICALLY logs in to the Cerberus network. Before, I had to input my email and password each time I started the game, but now it seems to work ok. I wonder if this is caused by a spurious entry in the registry. I did look, but couldnt find anything specific.

Seems to me that the save game part of the engine hasn't really been thoroughly tested, or there's some difference in the collectors edition that no-one spotted before it was shipped

I have been playing with the save game location by redirecting my "My Documents" folder around and sure enough, if you redirect the folder anywhere except to the default location (C;\\\\Documents And Settings\\\\[USER]\\\\My Documents - Where [USER] is the name you use to log onto windows) then it doesnt work.

This all leads me to believe that BioWare dropped the ball on this one and specified the location on the C:\\\\ drive to look for save games as opposed to reading the Windows System Variable for the location of "My Documents" as resetting the default location makes it work.

Perhaps a few more people could try it and see? Right click on the My Documents icon on the desktop and restore the default location. It will ask you if you want to move all your documents into this new location. Say "NO" as this way you can set it back after youre finished playing, then play the game from the beginning, then once you escape the lazarus station mission, save the game.  if you now try to load it. You should see the option to load the game as opposed to a blank screen, and you'll probably have an Autosave as well.

If this works, the problem is with ME2 and Bioware deserve a rather sharp slap on the wrist for ignoring system variables!

Incidently, can someone from BioWare check this?

I've just bought and installed the game and I'm too having no end of troubles with trying to play the game with more than 1 career.

Never known a game this bad when it comes to saving games/careers!?!?!

Same thing happen to me. I never seen a game save its game file under another area of the computer,But news flash gamers, ME does. Look into your documents and you will find another ME file with the save gave of ME one. set your ME2 config to that file and take it from there. That should solve your problem. Hope that helped.

Interesting to see this is stil going and that Bioware have done nothing to solve this issue.  I am a latecomer to ME2 and have had the same problem.  Contacted help by both email and telephone and got poor advice.  The forums (here) pointed to a possible solution: My rig has a 60G SSD and a large conventional disk.  The SSD is quite full so on installation it installs to the D.  After some tinkering which included altering the save pathway in the config file to my documents folder in the D drive I got the game to display "Resume" in the start/load menu.  Imported a ME1 game and played it through just using the resume function.  Tried the same thing for an alternate character and the resume command just went to the first game's end point.  No other options so I went back to the helpline and a "senior" helper could only suggest that I freed up space on the C:\\ drive!  I actually went to the trouble of doing this and reinstalled.  Having imported a ME1 game and played through the first mission until I could use the save command it won't even resume now.  I'm running Windows 7 and am starting to think that the game is just not going to work properly. I'm sure I'm not the only Win 7 user out there. :(

In looking in to moving My Documents off the C: drive, I've found some interesting stuff on it, or even the entire Users folder, can be moved. I wonder if this method might help with ME2, and any similar issues with other programs.

I've been experimenting with my Win 7 problem and discovered that even if I create folders on the C drive with a variety of document references the game doesn't point itself at them. I then deleted a folder called Bioware/Mass Effect 2/Save from the D drive and found that the game wouldn't resume to the end of my first character. I have since put this back and got a new game to respond to the resume command and found the new saves are going into this folder. They are all listed but the game will not display them in the load menu. I've fired this info at the EA support site and will let this thread know what their response is.

Hey Guys.. dont know if this is worth mentioning. I could not load my save games at all. Well I could create new games but not load my old career. The game was uninstalled and reinstalled etc. I moved it around from one drive to another. I was still scratching my head over it.

I went to the directory of the save game and save game 41 was 0KB in size. I deleted it and the game then loaded. I thought this might be worth listing. It looks like it is a corrupt save game. Lucky for me save game 41 was only like 20 minutes worth of scanning planets.
