The big three for an evil party are Viconia (cleric), Edwin (mage), and Korgan (beserker). Some of the neutrals that fit in would be Jan (thief/mage) and HaerDalis (blade/mage) and Cernd (druid/werewolf). Keep in mind, however that there are financial and other advantages to keeping your party reputation between 6 and 9 (on a scale of 1 to 20). Anotherwords, it's OK to steal candy from babies, but only when no one is watching. Posted Image

When you get to Throne of Bhaal you definately want to bring in Sarevok (fighter) who is even better at killing than Korgan is. Posted Image

The above applies to BG2; in BG1 there's Xzar (mage) and his buddy Monty (fighter) and Quail and Tiax (cleric/mages) and a weaker Viconia, but Evil is discriminated against Posted Image.
For plot reasons you might want to keep your childhood companion, Imoen (thief, and later mage/thief) in your party, even thought she's Posted Image .

In the first game Edwin is your best mage for his extra spell slots. Viconia makes an excellent healer and decent buffer but is frail and not much of a front liner. Shar-Teel is a decent warrior and if memory serves can be dual-classed to thief. Kagain is also pretty good. His armor class is poor but he has a high constitution that grants him minor regeneration. A night's rest is always enough to heal him fully. Imoen sticks around regardless of your reputation making her the most convenient utility thief. If you dual-class Shar-Teel to thief then Eldoth makes a decent sixth character. Bardsong protects against horror and his ability to activate wands is very powerful. Eldoth's high lore makes item identification a snap too.

But Eldoth and Shar-Teel will eventually kill one another.

Best BG1 evil party: Viconia, Edwin/ Xzar, Kagain, Shar-Teel, Montaron/Safana
Best BG2 evil party: Viconia, Edwin, Korgan/Sarevok, Haer-Dalis, Jan

You. JUST YOU! (As if those blathering idiots would aid me in any way...)

If you want my real opinion, Jan doesn't really care about alignment, take him along and pump him full of trapfinding/unlocking skills; he'll be extraordinarily powerful later on in the game and more than a little useful in dungeons. This also means if you're a thief or thief dual/MC you'll be able to focus on stealth.

Viconia is a damn nice choice, whether you're interested in the romance, the Drow or both, but on the combat side give her Crom Faeyr or a belt of strength, equip her with full-plate and a shield and she's on her way. You might want to install BG2tweaks, or at least the max health component to sort out her concerning HP pool, though.

Korgan should be your main tank. Give him the best armour and shield. There will be some brilliant axes throughout the game and one will improve his AC even more.

Edwin I've never taken along but other people will tell you just how overpowercaked he is.

I'm sure corrupted Anomen may help, but... Meh. You may want to just go through like that and pick up Mr. Special from the TOB expansion.

@jax - I wasn't aware of that. It's never been an issue for me. Maybe I finish before it gets to happen. :P

I've never experienced it myself, but looking through the dialogues it seems quite obvious:
"Say another word, Eldoth, and I'll cut out your tongue"
"Your impudence will one day get you killed, Eldoth"
"Watch your mouth Eldoth, or I'll end your life where you stand."
"You were warned Eldoth, now reap the consequences!"

Strangely Eldoth doesn't have any specific responses to Shar-Teel, looks like he just says something generally offensive to her a number of times, can't really imagine Eldoth initiating the fight. Wonder what happens if you have Skie with you too.

This is a spoilers forum, the poster could have told us beforehand if he didn't want any.

Interesting. That does make it seem like they eventually come to blows. I've taken Eldoth and Shar-Teel along in almost every evil run without issues. I wonder if it's based on a timer? I don't usually rush through the game though, so maybe not...

Do you tend to play characters with high charisma? Because that might have something to do with it.

It depends on the class. I usually leave charisma at 13 or 14 when playing a fighter, cleric, or thief, but shoot for an 18 with mages and bards. I've played evil fighters and thieves through BG without running into this issue before. Shar-Teel and Eldoth are staples in those games.

Just did a bit of sleuthing on the interwebs, and someone made a topic about how Shar-Teel and Eldoth killed one another (she scored a critical on him, but his poison arrows finished her after his death - hilarious), the poster said he had low Charisma too, so low in fact that they attacked one another within moments of Shar-Teel joining the team.
Man this makes me want to play it again with a low Charisma character and all the conflicting NPCs, really want to know if Skie joins in though, all the other pairs aid one another.

So far these are the conflicts I know of:

Minsc+Dynaheir > Edwin
Eldoth+Skie(?) > Shar-Teel
Jaheira+Khalid > Xzar+Montaron
Quayle > Tiax ?
Jaheira > Faldorn ?
Yeslick > Kagain
Kivan > Viconia ?
