So is there anyone else here who plays DnD and immediately had their mind go to the Kenku when reading about this race?

For some reason my perception of the race is pretty much these guys in space, wearing enviromental suits.

I really hope the Raloi don't look like that. I'd take Pyramid Head over that thing....

So instead of bird people looking like bird people, you'd want them to look like a human with a big metal triangle on their head. Glad you're not in charge of designing the races then. Besides, the Kenku images in question are rather obviously of a medieval nature, given their fantasy origin. Naturally, they'd be less 'middle age peasant' and more 'space faring alien race' in their Mass Effect incarnation.

The Raloi are the Skeksis.

..That would be pretty awesome actually. Or you take the Kenku, the Skeksis, and merge them all together with the Chozo.

I don't really see the need for them to be a derivative race from a derivative race. Since the kenku of d&d is based off of a Japanese crow spirit. I'd prefer that their appearance be a bit more original than a feathery version of an anthropomorphic being.

I'm pretty sure that the Raloi is some kind of humanoid avian...

I would love an egyptian-like culture but then again it would be like Stargate

...heck, Bioware should make a Stargate RPG, among other things

metroid prime = awesome... they look like bird version of halo's elites (metroid is 1980's / halo late 90's-00's)

I'm thinking more like the Firekka from Wing Commander.

Do you think the Reapers prefer Original Recipe or Extra Crispy?

You mean like how the Reapers are derivative race from the Illithids with their tactics of subjugation via dominating the mind and turning lesser races into their slaves to act as cannon fodder and strike troops, using other races for reproduction, and not to mention the fact of their appearance being rather similar to Illithid dreadnaughts from Spelljammer. You mean like that? And how the Illithids are a race which is in itself derivative from the Cthulhu Mythos?

Like I said gleym if I had to choose I'd take Pyramid head over birdmen. I didn't find the Horus Jaffas in Stargate too convincing either even if the race showed up in helmets like that I'd still tell them to get off my ship I'm fighting a war not hosting a costume party.

And I fail to see why you have a problem with the Raloi just because they are 'birdmen'. You know that turians are of an avian nature too, right? You don't have any problem with those 'birdmen'.

Well Turians aren't exactly birmen in the sense that they're a humans with feathers and a beak.
Turians are humanoids with sligtly avian features.

There's a big difference.

So 'slightly avian' is fine, but 'fully avian' is not because.. beak-prejudice?

Well it'd be kinda silly seeing chickens in spacesuits running around all over the place.

However, looking at what BioWare has done in the past, I think I trust their art department enough not to make the birdmen all too silly.

Might even be slightly awesome with a little luck...

I'm actually hoping for a race that's markedly different from humanoids, like the Elcor or Hanar. Any technologically advanced race will need to have some means of manipulating objects, of course, but the Raloi could be a truly avian race who have wings, but no arms, and manipulate objects with prehensile feet. (Heck, maybe they have 3 or 4 feet!)

Of course, the laws of physics being what they are, it's unlikely that the Raloi will be capable of flight in a normal gravity environment if they're as large as humans, which means that either their homeworld is naturally low-gravity (which would result in them needing to wear pressure suits in most places), or the Raloi are much smaller in size than other sentient races, even smaller than the Volus.

Then again, maybe the Raloi are flightless avians like the Ostrich... GAH! Too many variables, too many variables!

I wouldn't equate the Kenku to chickens in spacesuits.. Nor would I say the Kenku are silly-looking. I mean, if a humanoid with a crow's head is silly to you, and all the other things in the Mass Effect universe ranging from blue-skinned monosexed aliens with tentacle fringes, slug-people, raptor-bird men, rhino-reptile men, hyper-allergic people trapped inside of enviromental suits, fat hobbits with asthma in enviro-suits, serene jellyfish people, their lizardmen servants, and quadpedal elephant-men aren't considered even a little bit silly too, then I find your sense of imagination to be rather strange and inconsistent.

I'm hoping for a Ra (RAloi) or Horus type look (Like the picture posted above)

Hopefully we get to see them in DLC and POSSIBLY a squad mates in ME3? (PLEASE?! 4 humans will become 6 humans and we'll get just one of each other race... I'm praying for only 2 humans, a Volus, Batarian, Raloi, and Vorcha/Hanar squadmate among all the races we have now!)

Hmm, we've already got the 'egyptian' thing with the Asari. To an extent

Do people think we'll get to see this race in the third then?

Im normally against more squaddies (though i know its a standalone game so we'll get em anyway)... but being told to go recruit someone and then to see this new alien for the first time would be pretty epic
