I noticed a line in my most recent playthrough of  ME2. I believe it's actually Harbinger that says it in the ending lines of ME2.

"We are your salvation through destruction."

I know we are lead to believe that the reapers are here to destroy civilization- but what if that is something they have to do in order to keep the entire universe from being wiped out?

Their motives in their destruction of civilization are never explained, to my memory, Sovereign says something to the effect of "Its over your head."

I'm just pitching this theory off reading that post and just made it up now. What if the reapers are saying they are our salvation through destruction because they realize that because organic life is destructive and fragile that the only way to save them is to wipe them out and choose a select few for ascension into immortality? If civilizations don't get conquered or wipe themselves out the can and most likely will die out.

This could be true but its still fun to theorize what could be. Just for fun.

The Reapers have a major superiority complex. They are immortal and we aren't. All they are doing is wiping out a civilization that would have died off eventually anyway. They use organics to create more Reapers and in doing so they are offering us immortality. At least, thats how I interpreted Harbinger's words.

Me too. They will destroy us as a race of individual to make us part of "the collective" of the Reapers. Come on, you know they're the Borg. I kept waiting for Harbinger to say "Resistance is futile". Posted Image

Sovereign will tell you as much.

"Organic life is nothing but a genetic mutation, an accident. Your lives are measured in years and decades. You wither and die. We are eternal. We are the pinnacle of evolution and existence. We impose order on the chaos of organic evolution."

Given that perspective it's easy to see what Harbringer's salvation is all about. The underlying reasons for his missionary work is another story though. .

Imagine if the reapers are doing this out of fear of their masters who torture the reapers if their extinction cycle quota is not met. These masters wake up once every 37 million years and they are waking up this cycle.

Organics do have a way of fu***** up. Imho, a twist like that would be pretty good.

Check out the dark energy theory, which makes the reapers seem as some sort of galactic saviors of all lifeforms, including the ones who have yet to evolve or even come the existance.

I believe they wipe out the organics so they don't evolve to a point where they can easily beat the Reapers.

A fight for survival. That would explain why they only kill the technologically evolved species.

"Surrender your potential against to growing void."

That was dialogue cut from Harbinger from his speech at the end of ME2. Something make be threatening the Reapers.

Hmm, I realize I can't actually say anything in this forum, since its ME2 spoilers warning, not ME3 spoilers warning.

Does not have to be sapient. Stars, supernovas, black holes, dark energy can be unpredictable and dangerous to us all, as proved by Reapers losing Mu Relay.

"The universe is a dark place." said someone I once knew.
