The game installed without a hitch.  It just won't run.  I hit play and  the configuration utility starts and fails.  I get the MS error for daoriginsconfig.exe.

I have reistalled twice and I have got the same error.  I have tried the fix patch and still no success.

What gives?  What needs to be done?

you might try running windows update (as listed in the sticky for the 1.01 patch fixes), Make sure run it as "Custom" and get all available optional and hardware updates as a lot of the things Microsoft considers "optional" are actually quite important for a good gaming experince.

I did try the MS C++ SP... no change in the situation. I tried updating my video driver, also to no effect. I also keep my system quite up to date on all MS stuff. So that isn't the issue, though I did check again. hmmm...

This is the first game in a while that I have had problems with and the only one not to start in the last decade... not so good.

Have you tried bypassing the config utility? Goto your documents/bioware/dragon age/settings directory

Open DragonAge.ini and change the resolution to one your computer supports and then change

FirstRun=1 to FirstRun=0

If it gets you into the game you can change all the same settings in game as in the config. Not a fix for your actual problem but it might get the game to at least run for you.

By computer I meant monitor: So for 1680x1050 you would be

ResolutionWidth=1680

ResolutionHeight=1050

Did you also check to see that the settings file in MY DOCUMENTS weren't read only? You know the tool will fail to start with a MS crash error if you try to start the configuration tool with read only settings files.

What I find interesting is that the INI you presented is far larger and more detailed than what exists in my INI. With changing the INI to my resolution and adding in the FirstRun, made no difference. The configuration tool comes up and crashes... every time.

The firstrun setting appears to be for the movies though... not sure if it changes anything.

By the way... Pentium Dual core is a single chip with two CPUs or cores.

Did you check what I asked? If the settings files in that settings folder are read only (any of them) the tool will fail to start, I figured this the other night when I put my files to read only then tried to run the config tool.

Yes I did. Nothing is read-only. The folder in one case was, but the file wasn't. Still I switched them and tried again... to no effect...

Thanks for the suggestion.

I wonder if there is a way to disable the configuration tools initialization scan... that seems to be where the issue is.

I just tested on mine and it appears you can bypass the tool by just going to your dragon age install folder bin_ship and starting daorigins.exe . I completely deleted my settings folder and it just created a new one.

Thanks for that bit of advice. Now I can get into the game. :-) Let's see where that gets me.

Another solution to bypassing the config:

Navigate to users/yourname/documents/bioware/dragon age

In your case there should be no files there, only folders.

Create a new txt document and rename it to: systeminformation.xml

Now the launcher doesn't try to start the config first. It just goes straight into the game.

Sorry, but you do not seem very interested in getting a solution. PC Tech Forums here all have FAQs and guides pinned on top. You ignored them.  After failing to get satisfaction searching the forum archives, then you should complete a problem report.  The description of that process, on the top of the ME-1 Tech Forum, is better than the impractical version on top in here, however.
