All the more reason the marketers to build in incentive, so that they get some pre-release momentum before reality hits for good or ill.  Like I said upthread, it's a game or a contest between what you want and what they think they can get you to pay for it.

Me, I feel burned by having paid $40 for Awakening on day of release.  I don't like the direction I see the franchise going in terms of gameplay and the greater focus on console.  So it's going to take more than this to move me off the dime.  It would be better marketing to show us more concrete stuff about the game, but I assume that's coming still.  I don't blame them for trying, regardless.

The way I see it - pre-order now. No harm done since they don't charge you. If what you see in the coming months doesn't look good to you, cancel it. If it does look good, you have bonus content now.

Information needed is relative to the consumer. If someone has never been disappointed with a product from a certain company, and they purchased a product that the new product is based off of and thoroughly enjoyed it; and no information they have seen or heard has detracted from the 2nd installment then it would not be a crazy idea to pre-order the new product.

If you trust a company to deliver on a product, then pre-ordering the product as soon as possible is not a bad decision.

there's still quite a lot of time between now and january 11th. considering what we've learned since the game was announced a few months ago, i'm willing to believe that by mid december we can make the decision of wether or not to pre-order.

The problem is that some - definitely not all - of the people who are really up in arms over this think that refusing an incentive on a matter of principle makes them more intelligent consumers.

But then again, a flight is no video game. You know exactly what to expect when you order a flight, transport from A to B. And you can even read comments and reviews on the internet about the particular airline. You do not know what to expect from DA 2, though.

I expect I'll have a game that I'll most likely enjoy playing. That's what is being created after all. A game. On a computer.

And heaven forfend that corporations be interested in the concept of capitalism. Are they greedy? Heck yeah. They have bills and employees to pay like everyone else, not to mention stockholders to make happy. And the CEO's need to take cushy vacations and fly around on their private jets because they were smart enough (Or underhanded enough) to make their way to the top of a multi-billion dollar operation. They're not philanthropists.. Well some might be but that's beside the point.

I mean seriously, if you don't want to pre-order, don't frikkin pre-order. You're not going to miss out on game-changing content just because you didn't want to spend the extra cash. Sure, Shale was cool and possibly my favorite character from DA:O but the first time I played through, I skipped the entire mission to get her. I still finished the game! Shocking!

The main question is, how much are the customers willing to accept until they say "enough"?

People are basically sheep so I don't know why you even ask this question. I bought CE's of two WoW expansions because I like shiny things. I'm a sheep. I'm not afraid to admit it. I have since cancelled my WoW subscription and stopped playing because I no longer find the game interesting. I will not be playing Cataclysm.

People will stop paying for products when they think they've had enough. And when sales decline far enough, companies change their tactics or stop producing. Right now, BioWare has products that people are willing to pay for and if they want to market extra shiny things for a promise to buy the game on release, more power to them if it works. I pre-ordered my game, but as I mentioned, I'm a sheep and I like shiny things.

But this isn't a project. This requires no effort on your behalf other than having money and the ability to make a choice. They announced it now so that people who are ready to give them money can do so, and leave a large window for participation, during which they will be marketing the game.

No, but some of the same principles apply.  I'm being asked to make a decision, by a certain date, without having anything approaching the necessary information.  It's been said that I will probably have more information by that date, but it's not guaranteed, especially since the information we have gotten gives me the impression that the PC version isn't being taken as seriously as it was in DA1.

I'm not saying Bioware is evil or stupid or wrong to announce this, I just think the timing is a bit wrong.  Something just feels off about asking fans to pre-order a game by a certain date, before giving those same fans any subtantial information.

Only people who have done that I've noticed are the people having issues with the game already. So obviously its crazy to think someone could be fine with any changes currently announced.

Color me confused - if we can just cancel or "move" our pre-order at any time, even after January 11th, then what's with the arbitrary January 11th deadline?

To reward those who preorder early.

+ If there was a collector's edition, it wouldn't be able to be preordered by around January due to being sold out or something.

I assume there is also some intangible marketing value in being able to show number of pre-orders.  "Hey look, the cool kids are buying, you should too."  Also a lot of people who pre-order probably don't bother to cancel or move things around.  Inertia means that if people have already made a buying commitment, a lot of them will stick with it.

Well if they made decisions based on how people would feel... I don't think to many decisions would be made.

Do you need any substantial information?

Yes, Awakening was worse than Origins and Witch Hunt was...let's not talk about it, but having a look at their older games, they do deserve quite a credit of trust, don't they? Of course, they might make bad decisions (such as carrying Morrigan over to DA2), but overall, it will most likely still be a good game.

I just don't get why people are so upset about the whole case. Pre-Order now and get stuff for free that you would else have to buy for more money afterwards. If you don't want to take the risk...don't pre-order. It truly isn't that hard, is it?

No, it's not hard, but I'm concerned because it almost seems to imply a lack of confidence in their game.  A pre-order should always be an informed decision - not a "risk" or a "gamble".

Except that the approach they're taking to DA2 is substantially different than DA1, enough so I'm approaching it as a fresh Bioware product rather than a fairly-predictable sequel to an existing franchise - at least until information comes out regarding the PC version that proves otherwise.

And no, past Bioware games haven't been amazing enough for me to promise a $60 purchase on very limited information.

''Complete Game'' WTF... this is kinda Idiot... this is a DLC plus some bonus Weapons... as far as I remember this is less than a pourcent of the game... calm down... It's not like Prince of Persia (2008) where they sold the end of the game in a DLC...

Let me put my inane opinion here: It is a generalization of course and bound to many fallacies as such.

More pre-orders mean a lot to a company. Why?

1) Profit: Value of games depreciates over time

2) Prestige: People trust us so much that they bought our game before trying it out.

3) Sale assurance: You have bought it. Period. Some of you may not have bought it after reading/seeing user reviews/ Metacritic scores / Actual gameplay footage etc.

under these circumstance would you NOT encourage people to buy it before being released? Whether you buy the argument or freebies or not, it only matters if you Bought the game or not. - Troika (Vampire) ; not sic.

Me too, exactly.  I bought ME on steep discount and didn't like it so I never got ME2, but that was already a cautionary experience regarding Bioware games.  The Origins DLCs were enough to convince me I didn't need to buy everything with Dragon Age on it.  So while I am buying Fallout New Vegas pretty much sight unseen, I need to hear more about DA2.  If it is indeed Dragon Effect, I dunno...

...then there is Alistair...  Now the Alistair cameo really is an evil ploy.  Evil, evil.

One word.

Shale.

That is all.

If that's a jab at having to preorder to get a "full game"... It's completely wrong.

Shale was cut content that was restored by the DLC team, because they were ready with their stuff before the game was. Y'know, changing the game from PC only to multi-platform, which pushed the release date back signifigantly.
They were then tasked with the Shale content, which was then given free to every new purchase of Dragon Age: Origins.

Of course, if you were just saying what I said in less words, then that's just fine.

Where as I don't think the changes are that substantially different or the changes I do see I like.

I recall someone asking me for an ironclad guaranty, something 'written in stone.' I told him I only knew of two things written in stone - corner stones and headstones. All the rest is speculation and everything changes. The lengthy creative process of making a game is a major speculation. Buying a game is speculation. Reviews are sometimes useful, sometimes not. I've purchased games based on reading many positive reviews and found I didn't like the game. So I speculated on other people's opinions and lost money. Happens. I've also bought games without any idea how good or bad it was and came up with a replayable winner. The final decision rests with you.

From your original post and additional comments, it sounds (to me) like you want an absolute guaranty of some kind.  There isn't any. Maybe you should wait until the game has been released.

For the record, I pre-ordered prior to knowing about the Signature Edition. I based my choice on all the previous BioWare games I've played. Except for two DLCs, I'd say I definitely got my money's worth.

There is a difference between commenting on the quality of the game and the quality of the marketing.

I think people have the right to complain.

I think this is a goddamn stupid thing to complain about.
