BioWare isn't holding a gun to our collective heads. If you don't want to pre-order, then don't. You aren't being forced to buy early, and *gasp* you can even cancel the pre-order if you don't like what you see before release. As for the "punishment" angle - how so?

If you don't order a collector's edition, as someone else pointed out, do you have some sort of right to whine later on about not getting all the CE goodies if they're no longer available? *shrug*

Anyhow, thanks BioWare! <3

Save for the soundtrack, all CE goodies are DLC, so it´s unlikely they won´t be in the GotY edition. Just a matter of patience. As the story in DA2 seems to stand on its own no problem for me there. If they do the same for ME3 I´ll probably preorder rather than wait a year+ to play the ending.

I feel curious about the extra character. If s/he wasn´t cut from the game, then they made up and added a superfluous (sp?) character to the story. In ME2 that wasn´t very important, but DA:O had very superior character writing and especially interaction. How will this one fit with the rest?

It's not hard. If the product is worth X+20 dollar, but you pay only X, then obviously the one who receives the money has a loss of 20.

It is not that simple. If they factored in the sales of the pre-orders and that was part of their budget, then if they met the pre-order sales they desired, then it would be a profit and not a loss. It would only be a loss if they actually lost money out of the deal.

It is even more complex than that. The initial period of pre-ordering (right from the start up to about half of it) only results in very few copies being sold. I think the Signature Edition idea may be designed to try to correct that curve. The time after that is a boost in sales, similar to the one right after the release. If the Signature Edition contains exclusive stuff then it is a risk trying it out, because that extra stuff is not being sold in any other period. Thus, I think it is a loss that needs to be paid by others later on. You can see such graphs (involving DVD pre-orders as a sample) here.

Actually, and preorders that are paid for do not result in actual sales for Bioware.  Bioware cannot recognize any revenues until the product is shipped to the retailers (I am assuming that Canada uses the rules similar to US GAAP).  Any monies received before the product is shipped would be considered unearned income.  This sits as a liability on their books.  IF they use percentage of completion method for revenue recognition, then they can only pull enough unearned income out of liabilities and onto the income statement to cover the costs incurred for each accounting period.

Additionally, budgets have nothing to do with actual profits and loss for accounting purposes.  They simply set a finacial framework in place.  However, if they may indeed be trying to meet budgeted preorder bookings and this would be a financial reason why they made this special offer.  Or, they could just have decided to do something nice for the fans.  Both reasons are financially sound.

PS: Please forgive my accountant speak.

Its not really even a collectors edition though. Its a "you get this for preordering before such and such" Other wise you're **** outta luck. Kinda a suck thing to do to withhold an actual companion from anyone who doesn't preorder the game.

I'm with the OP on this one. Extra stuff is nice. Extra stuff for no extra cost is better.

It takes money to make this stuff. And this stuff wouldn't be there if they couldn't make it as DLC- it would have just been one of those unfortunate cuts that makes developers want to cry. I don't understand why people are so angry about it.

But you pretty much need to preorder a game before a certain date to get it's Collector's Edition.

@COS... Yes it is the actual collector's edition. This has been confirmed in another thread. I really believe that the Signature Edition will be available for order after Jan 11, 2011 (no Bioware confirmation, just a gut feeling). You will simply have to pay the extra dollars for it then. So, if you want to wait and are willing to pay the extra dough, you will probably get the same things those of us who pre-order get.

Honestly, I do not see why people are complaining so adamantly about this. There are a myriad of reasons why Bioware would do this both business and non-business related. The bottom line,is they did a nice thing for the customers and a lot of us customers appreciate this.

I have several and only preordered DA:O because of the "only available in this shop" false marketing we had in my country.

You might want to back a few pages and look up the post with quotes from Jon Epler about Shale and so forth. I think that pretty much explains things.

Although the extra stuff seems like a great deal, I feel like Bioware should just INCLUDE IT IN THE MAIN GAME! I mean, if it's being made right now, they might as well...

Except it's using a different budget and timetable than DA2.

That´s obvious. Saying this is worth 20$, but not selling it later would be silly.

Reason for complain? Having you preorder a game to get the extras at least two months before realease, especially a game with rather negative reactions from a significant part of the fan base whenever we learn something new just feels wrong to me. It almost seems they don´t trust the game on itself. Anyway, in March some people will be thinking how stupid they were for preordering, and others for not preordering.

For my part, I like other kind of CE extras.

While I'm not sure if I will buy Dragon Age 2, what Bioware did was still cool. Props for that.

I read these forums and I can't honestly believe that some sad people still feel the need to complain and whine about FREE GODDAMN CONTENT! Seriously, I have tried to think on it from the angles some of those people must be coming from but I cannot comprehend why anyone would have any problem whatsoever with this.

The internet never fails to amaze me!!!

On a personal note thanks BioWare for the content, which I will be recieving at no extra cost. :)

Now just make KotOR III and I may change my signature banner :D

In a day and age where pre-order items and exclusive extra content is expected by everyone, it's easy to take things for granted. But some of us remember a time when company's didn't give out such wonderful rewards to their loyal customers. For those of us, we are thankful that Bioware thought of us when making the Signature Edition of DA 2.

It may strike the entitlement generation as strange that a company is offering exclusive content to folks who want to buy a game that is five months out from release. There are those conspiracy theorists out there who think this is just a ploy to avoid piracy. These are the folks who well yell and scream and refuse to pre-order the game (or will pre-order but demand that they receive more for their efforts and will denounce Bioware for daring to offer something extra to begin with). That's their perogative. They are free to think that way and hold those opinions.

Regardless, I personally am thankful, as a fan, that I and my fellow fans are being treated and rewarded. Thanks Bioware, you didn't have to offer an extra character and extra content but you did anyway. And you're not even charging us for it. You rock.

Can't wait to play DA 2 in March.

I have a time machine.  There have been some side effects though... my loss of sanity for one.  =]

Also, I go for chunks.  I'm free for a bit, then I'm not etc.  And jobs are overrated :P.

... Of course no one hires someone with a screwball class schedule...<_<

I've been bundled inside trying to fight of a cold during one of the most horrible rain/wind storms I can remember, but this just made my day!

I love getting free things and rewards for what I was going to do anyways :)

So yes, thank YOU!

What Dave said. Obviously, if you don't preorder the CE at <x> time and it ends up being sold out, then you're out of luck if you suddenly decide "Ah, this IS going to be pretty good - I wish had I gotten the CE ...gah!" However, in the case of the SE items, I suspect that people might have a shot at getting them later (am thinking it might work along the lines of ME2 so that everyone at least has the opportunity later on to get the NPC and/or gear).

This reminds me of that panda cub from a WoW CE that a guildie had (and man, I hated that particular guildie - not because of the cuddly panda cub that I coveted, but because he was a huge jerk :P ). If you didn't get the CE back then, you were out of luck - unless you wanted to take a chance on ebay and pay a ridiculous amount of money for the original CE. I'm not sure, but I think at one time it went for $1,000+ (or maybe I'm thinking of the Spectral Tiger mount - unless that actually went for even more $$$ anyway).

Heh, checked on ebay to see if I had that right. At the moment, I see a listing for a combo of the original WoW CE (with the panda cub <3/zergling/Diablo), Burning Crusade CE (Lurky & that whelp), plus the Lich King CE (with Frosty) & the Cataclysm CE (err, some other whelp pet *rolleyes*) listed at $2,000 (buyout  = $3,000) - yikes. Okay, that's just totally insane (and I see no bids, so no one's interested so far - haha).

After seeing that, I think that even if people do have to pay $5-$10 for a new companion at a later date...it's not quite as horrible as coughing up $2,000-plus for a mini-pet.

I've been pre-ordering BioWare games since Neverwinter Nights.  I do believe this is the first time I've ever gotten the "Collector's Edition" for no extra charge.

Not only that, but I got a "Happy Birthday from EA" code on my birthday just recently.  I though to myself, hmmm...I wonder if I can use my shiny 25% off birthday code to pre-order DA2?  I can still upgrade when the Collector's Edition is announced, right?  I could, and I did.

Moral of the story?  I got 25% off the Signature Edition of Dragon Age 2!!Posted Image  I love you, BioWare!!

And, with the extra money I saved on my PC version, I went ahead and pre-ordered the XBox version for my husband.

If that makes me an "idiotic fangirl" then so be it.  I'm an idiotic fangirl that has what's sure to be an awesome game with even more shinies.Posted Image

P.S.  To members of the BioWare Defense League:  Thank you for sticking up for my favorite game company so much more eloquently than I can.  I really do appreciate it.Posted Image
