Mary Kerby, and other BioWriters, created a section of the journal that functions like the Mass Effect codex entries. It has a great deal of lore and information that isn't necessary to the game but that might be of interest to the user.
The CC also has files about more mechanical/class related data, but that’s not what interests me.
