Lowtown better have a brothel for side distractions. :)

Well there's gonna be a brothel *somewhere* in Kirkwall. Lowtown seems like a likely spot.

It could be in dark town, although I shiver at the thought of what might be on offer if such was the case. >.>

They'd never put the brothel in Lowtown. What if there was a tidal wave? Maker forbid the brothel should be destroyed in the event of a natural disaster!

Mary are you implying that the fine ruleing class does not value the great citizens of low town as much as their brothels?  Also do tidal waves happen a lot in Kirkwall, or are brothels just so highly valued they don't want to take the chance?

I love the splashes of color in the concept art, gives the feel of the sets from that HBO series Rome. As for brothels well in a city that size there'd be dozens or more. But I mean there's brothels and then there's a tavern with a pallet in the back and an arrangement between the clientele and the managment.

Wow, those concept art pieces are gorgeous. Very atmospheric.

What I wanna know is, who maintains all these ginormous red awnings? I mean they're huge! Look at the scale in the second pic. I'm surprised they aren't entirely covered in seagull poop and feathers.

The Lord High Launderer of Kirkwall is the one who officially presides over the awnings, and the care and maintenance thereof. It is an ancient and respected position that dates all the way back to the Tevinter Imperium.

I see, I see *takes notes*

And I never knew Kirkwall valued its brothels so highly. Way to keep your priorities in line, Kirkwallians!

Brothels are for people with more than two coins to rub together. Freelancing would be what happens down in Lowtown I presume.

Hmm, I quite like the look of it. Vaguely reminds me of the NGC documentary about Nero and the burning of Rome (crowded alleys & whatnot).

Ah, we'll be doing a bit of slum-trawling again will we? Chasing after some stolen goods, hunting down a gang leader? Reminds me of The Alienage.

Dark Town sounds a bit more troubling. The kind of people that are forced to seek refuge in sewer tunnels and huddle down amongst rats and worse, well … that's indicative of a level of desperation that robs men of their very humanity. If you're willing to sink that low to survive, you'd do just about anything.

Obviously the pre-emptive solution is then to put brothel on a large enough boat.

... all the crude references to both seamen and the motion of the ocean one could put in the name of such establishment, too...

So there would be no point for the Free Marches Navy to ever go into port?

Love the concept art.

Although the name is a bit uncreative.

Except for letting the soldiers in the navy struggle for the brothel boat, nope.

I don't know, i'd expect them to frequently go there to practice boarding, at least.

I wonder if Darktown is a fantasy version of this.

The Mole People: Life in the Tunnels Beneath New York City details Toth's early-90s encounters with several dozen of what she estimated at the time to be 5,000 homeless people living beneath the streets of New York, mostly in subway and railroad tunnels. Particularly large populations inhabit (or inhabited, anyway) the multilevel
labyrinths beneath Grand Central and Penn stations. Many tunnel people are solitary loonies not unlike the guys you see living aboveground in cardboard boxes in any large American city.

In a few cases, though--this is where it gets truly weird--sizable communities have coalesced, some  allegedly numbering 200 people or more, complete with "mayors," elaborate social structures, even electricity. Toth describes one enclave deep under Grand Central with showers using hot water from a leaky steam pipe, cooking and laundry facilities, and an exercise room. The community has a teacher, a nurse, and scampering children. "Runners" return frequently to the surface to scavenge food and such, but others--the real "mole people"--routinely go for a week or more without seeing the light of day.

Lowtown?, Darktown?, what about Downtown?.

When you're alone and life is making you lonely, you can always go Downtown, surely?

Sounds more like the Edinburgh vaults of the 19th century than that in my meaning. That it isn't so much separate small communities but rather a genuine slum, from which they depart during the days to work (those that have work of course) and come home to later.

Lower Taris or the Undercity? It would make more sense for Darktown to be the Undercity surely? I can see there being a lot of room for creative art design when it comes to something like Darktown, the Undercity in KotOR was a cool idea but suffered a bit in execution - it's just too bland and ugly down there, I like Taris but that section is a chore to play through these days. However with DA2's superior graphics amongst other creative differences, a city/slum set within and around the sewer system could look great, grime and nastiness can have a strangely awesome visual appeal when done right.

Of course there is no confirmation we'll even be going down there yet, we might go no further down than Lowtown.

Oh yes. I meant the Undercity, I suspected it wasn't called lower Taris but  I thought I mixed the "Undercity" thing with WoW. :P
