Love the concept art.
Although the name is a bit uncreative.

^This. Low town and Dark town don't strike me as particularly authentic sounding..

The concept art is very nice, like ancient Rome or Greece perhaps.

Considering real cities use such creative names as Uptown, Downtown, Midtown, Chinatown, Boystown, etc. it sounds pretty authentic to me.

Modern cities, yes.

Phew, good thing Dragon Age 2 isn't historical fiction then - or else that would be pretty embarassing.

It's not like the older names were striving to be innovative as opposed to practical -- Westminster, Tower of London, London Bridge, Shoreditch etc. just to name a few.

So Darktown is in the sewers? Yay for sewers... I missed the sewers in Origins. I mean adventuring just isn't the same if you can't fight a few baddies in the sewers. :P

I still say it sounds cheesy, just like 'the illusive man' in ME2, but whatever.

You can't be a real adventurer until you have crawled and fought baddies in a sewer, that's the rules. ^_^

I found a talking sword once, while adventuring in the sewers.

In Conan there is a belt that drops off a minor boss in the Tarantia Sewers that explicitly says putting it on makes you smell like poop...

Your move, Dragon Age.

I was going to bite the obvious Monty Python bait, but you presented a better oportunity
So Lowtown. I can understand some people saying it sounds "cheesy", but coming up with catchy place names that would see regular use by every strata of the society is kind of hard.
Then again, a tour through the old town in Santiago de Compostela shows that by then, it was already commonplace to have such names: Every street is named after a remarkable building of the street - such as "soportais" (for arched portals) ou "do Convento" (Convent Street), and town squares are named after the artisans that worked there. I don't quite sit well with Lowtown, but coming from the other side: It feels not organic enough. Probably "docksides" or "fishyards" would sit better.

If it's the lowest placed part of town that surrounds the harbour, with the rest being around it and scaling the stone walls, then i'd say it makes sense for it to be "lowtown" especially when the original function was to store the elves and others of poor standing. It's possible the docks proper are separate area altogether with its own name, much like Denerim had (no doubt also "cheesily named") north and south Dock Districts.

I have no problem with "Lowtown" as a name. It is low, in terms of both altitude and economy (and likely culture, at least in the opinions of those who live in other areas). Why this is not a perfectly reasonable name for people to come up with I don't understand. Not everyone and everything in Fantasy needs to be whimsical and colorful.

It's just a nickname that the people collectively made up. It seems perfectly natural for it to be a relatively practical and simple one.

Dark fantasy seem to be allways like sewers. Point is, looks same as allways, dirty alleys, dark corridors, dark tunnels and so on. Basicly places where poor peoples would be. Very booring.

Remember David's rule of naming -- When you come up with a name, regardless of how good it is, most everyone will hate it the first time they hear it.

In about four weeks (give or take? I can't remember David's exact number), it'll be inconceivable that it would ever have been called otherwise.

I think both darktown and lowtown are excellent names that fit perfectly. Usually in fantasy location names are fantastical nonsense, ignoring that practically all location-names in the world is a simple description of where it is (in some cases the meaning have gotten lost throughout the years though).

Stockholm - literally means Islets of logs. New York - should be fairly obvious. York - originally was Jórvik, literally the bay of chieftains.

Location names are supposed to be descriptive. Meant to easily conjure up a mental image of where it can be found. As such lowtown is a perfect name. Where is it? Down there.
