Backstory:  My 360's disc drive stopped reading discs a few weeks ago, so I sent it in to Microsoft since it was still under warranty.  So I get it back and the disc drive works fine, but when I go to play Mass Effect 2 I notice that the characters that I imported have vanished.  Mind you, the non-imported play is there and works fine, only the imports are gone.

So I call Microsoft.  The rep was reasonably helpful, and identified it as a glitch they were aware of, and said that if I finished my ME1 games again and re-imported, my ME2 files would reappear.  That sounds OK, if annoying, but there's a minor complication.  I played ME1 on my then-roommate's XBox.  When I imported my characters, I went back over to his place, imported the characters on his box, then transferred the files.  Except now he has sold the box, so I can't do it again.

This leads me to two questions: 1. Is the solution offered by Microsoft legit, or might there be an easier way?
2. If that is the solution, does it have to be the same characters to resolve the glitch?  Or could I borrow my friends ME1 save file, finish Ilos, import, and that would cause all of my ME2 save files to reappear?  If anyone has had experience with this particular problem, that would be fantastic!
