Ostagar, and I am level 11! Just got to Flemeth's Hut after Tower of
Ishal / Battle at Ostagar.I have 31 modified cunning, EXPERT stealing (3
points) and improved stealth (2 points)So that totals over 50 in
cunning score, right?MY GOODNESS! Why does it keep saying, "stealing
failed" when I try to pickpocket her??It says "stealing failed" then
after that, when I try to pickpocket her again, it says, "nothing to
steal."Will somebody tell me what's going on?
also, I am playing the xbox 360 version. Has anyone ever accomplished
this, so early in the game? Is it possible to pickpocket from her at
all?
Every time I try, it either says, "Stealing failed" or "nothing to steal." Is this some kind of bug? Or is it possible?
Even if she doesn't carry anything worth stealing, I still want to pickpocket every NPC possible.

Even the King of Orzammar. Cheap bastard. Gives me a maul from the brother he murdered as a reward.

What was your cunning score when you tried to steal from her?
My main question is wanting to know whether or not she can be stolen from. With high enough stealth, or not.
And if so, how much stealth does it take???
If she doesn't have anything, then why does it say, "stealing Failed"? Why wouldn't it say, "Nothing to steal"?

The stealing in DA is akin to cracking a safe. You may fail to crack it or you may be successful, but even if you're successful you may find that there's nothing inside.
So yeah, you can fail a stealing attempt with an NPC that has nothing to steal. And you can succeed at stealing and still get the "Nothing to steal" message.

That is definitely not true in the XBOX 360 version. 5 playthroughs, and that has never happened, personally, with the mixed messages, as you claim.
Are you saying this from experience, or just guessing?

At least on the PC, the mixed messages can either be fairly common, or only happen once in awhile. On the rogue save I'm on, I haven't been getting the mixed Stealing Failed/Nothing to Steal messages, but on my warrior save using Leliana, they're a little more common.
The reason you get Stealing Failed is because her dice roll, or stealing resist score, or whatever is still higher than your specific attempt to pickpocket her. Having max stealth and stealing won't necessarily guarantee you a Stealing Success/Nothing to Steal.
Flemeth is a high level character, and the rank of an enemy have an effect on your stealing success. How many times are you able to steal from an orange boss, despite having a high stealth/stealing/cunning score? If I remember correctly, her name comes up orange after the whole tower thing, which means she'll be harder to "properly" steal from than if she were white.
I've also heard that either Physical or Mental resistance plays a part in detecting (and therefore resisting) a pickpocket attempt. I think the Dragon Age Wiki describes modifiers for stealing and mentions this.

I'm telling from experience with the PC version, but then again I just remembered that there was apparently a bug that caused successful steal attempts to yield no rewards.

Whenever an enemy or NPC has had something to steal, and I haven't been able to steal it, it has always said, "stealing failed."
I have never had a "stealing failed" message occur with an enemy or npc that had nothing to steal in the first place. That is why I was confused to begin with,
