What does it add to the game?

It can add a serious amount of drama and shock when done right. (Alien invasion harvesting humans, player sees a child be taken and eaten by the evil alien monster, get ready to avenge the kid!)
Edit: Censoring it can still add shock and drama, but actually seeing it would be more shocking and immediate in the viewer's mind.
Edit2: Actually, seeing the kid be taken by the monster, and hearing the eating slightly off screen or behind a wall can be more horrifying than actually seeing it.

It can also be completely gross, unwanted, and distasteful if done wrong. (Having the player allowed to kill random kids, like in the mod for Fallout 3, just placing a mine in that one kid village and watch one of them step on it.)

Why not show something that you know is occuring.

Not to mention random killing, decapitation and gore (bloody mess perk, anyone) combined with cannablism gets through, but god forbid you use morphine to kill pain......

LOL.

Not to mention The Australia classification Boards runs their rating system with information from Cooper Lawrence.

No I kid, she apologized.

That's a fair point, though I suppose in this case it's because they can't/don't really want to. But if you're going to do a scene where a kid gets killed then I guess you may as well just do it, that being said I found the scene where Connar dies to be effective without seeing him be murdered. So I guess it's really just a matter of style presentation wise.

It's stupid, but it used to be worse. You know, like in those old movies where sex couldn't even be implied, not even between a married couple. So parents of stable families were shown to have twin beds, stuff like that. It was totally and utterly absurd, so on a long enough timescale it does look like it's getting better.

Actually, you'd be surprised. Although they didn't just come out and say it, there was a lot of innuendo in those old movies, but the censorship depended mainly on the production companies. Paramount was pretty relaxed back then.

You know, there was this one time my party was hanging around in the slums in Baldur's Gate 2. I felt lazy and was using the keyboard for everything I could. Meant to switch to Yoshi and pickpocket a kid but accidentally chose Minsc. Well, F5 was mapped to Lilarcor and, you see, the poor kiddo was literally blown to bits. Lilarcor's "Haha, throw a coin in that fountain!" comment didn't help, either.

...So, yeah. On many aspects it seems to me that BioWare games have gone darker over the years, but I don't know what to make of the example I gave.

You cannot be serious OP. I do not want any game where I can actually see people stabbing children - the decision already is disgusting and I do not know how anyone with a mostly sane mind may want to see children bleeding to death.

Oh I know it wasn't universal, but then some stuff gets through in these games too.

Off topic:

My favorite example is in the classic John Ford film Stagecoach.   During the journey of the stagecoach, it stops at a Fort because the natives are "on the warpath."  And one of the female passengers gives birth to a child offscreen even though she never showed any signs of pregenancy.

We watched it in film class and the professor made a point to say after the whole baby plot came out of nowhere to joke, "Bet you guys didn't see that coming."  Though we weren't watching it as an example of censorship, but as one of fantastic black & white photography.

Image IPB

Semi on-topic:  The presence of censorship doesn't necessarily result in a lesser product, though I have conceptual problems with the very idea of it.

Maybe you're not roleplaying a sane person.

I think it was Fallout 2 that let you kill children, wasn't it?

I dont know if this is just me but with Dragon Age being described as "Dark Heroic fantasy" I seem to recall the Baldur's gate series touching on darker themes than Dragon Age and for the most part having a darker story than what was contained in Origins.

As long as it made sense in context of the story (eg killing Connor) I don't see why theres anything wrong with it.

I'm undecided on how I feel about this.  I'm all for freedom of choice, but WHY would you want to see this?  How will seeing this make your gaming experience more complete?
I personally have no desire to see this in any game I play, particularly if my actions somehow contributed to it, and would probably be disgusted if they took the time to detail this...

..but I understand peoples right to see the consequences of their actions in a virtual environment.  I suppose the bigger question is where is the line drawn?  Do we simply display every horrible thing as a lovingly detailed video clip?  Or do we have some boundaries that shouldn't be crossed.

To be honest I'm probably more horrified by the implied nature of these things.  My imagination is a much more powerful tool than the graphics rendering ability of any system.

So I guess I'll go eat some wasabi dusted peanuts or something and let people more definite in their answers continue to discuss this.

Not just you; I'm totally in line with what you mean. I used the word "darker" in a slightly different meaning, however. Let me give a simple example to clarify: Baldur's Gate had the traditional morality and reputation system, whereas there was no karmic backlash in Dragon Age.

You can't even kill anyone you want in DA:O and you want to kill children?

It is kind of a strange topic, no doubt, it's something I expect more on a Fallout 3 board. In that case I can understand the annoyance, given how many unethical things the game allows the player to do the Little Lamplight portion of the game kind of stands out as restricting player freedom. Not for gameplay reasons, not for storytelling reasons, not for aesthetic preferences, but because of legal realities beyond the scope of the game. So it has the tendency to irk people.

But in DA:O the only time it would even come up is Connor, and I think that was handled well. So... I'm not sure I get the problem.

I'm 99% sure it isn't illegal, it's just a taboo in game development. The ESRB won't let it get through without an AO if it has it, because the world is full of idiots who like to censor everything they don't like.

It would be better if they continue to improve DA 2 rather than waste time on something as pointless like watching children die.

The way it was done in DAO with connor was shocking enough, dont need to actually see my character or the mother for that matter slit a kids throat.

Ugh, just reading that makes me want to vomit.

In regards to the OP, no. No, no, no. If they aren't even allowed to show breasts on the playable character in a game rated M, they sure as hell won't be allowed to show children being murdered.

What is with the sadistic threads being started here lately? First someone wants to be able to stroke their own...ego by slapping their companions and now someone else wants to be able to graphically murder children. What is wrong with some people?

I don't care for what I roleplay, that's a real person with a, hopefully, sane mind behind the screen and if you enjoy seeing children die, you should take a few pretty vital steps asap.

Dragon Age did it in the right way. Give the option, but do not be more brutal than necessary. I could never kill Connor and even if you do so because you do not have another choice (you always have, yet maybe you can't save everyone), would it be fun for you to see a small child stabbed in the chest, slowly bleeding to death?

Then again, why bother with all those blood-thirsty...people, BioWare will, fortunately, never implement such a scene.

Some people do, to the extent that they would want that kind of option.  I personally don't, but I was playing devil's advocate.

That being said, if this was in the context of a Fallout 3 discussion - namely Little Lamplight, some people resented having to put up with the kids' magical immortality when they could literally kill everyone else in the game*, including nuking an entire town of people that had at least two kids in it.   As a Dragon Age discusison, I'm not sure what the point is.

* That wasn't plot flagged.
