Will we be able to watch children die this time around?

The response was to Spartan's comment about Shianni, Broodmother, Leliana etc. Story events that occur without player interaction. Having those as visual representation in the game, would push DA:O into the realm of games I don't enjoy, because they would be in the game at some stage without you having a choice to make.
The Connor comment was a post BEFORE, about how it was a design decision not an issue of CENSORSHIP. Had nothing to do with my post AFTER Spartan's comments (Where I said I'm glad they didn't include the graphical representation of non-choice moments).
But if you're somehow reading more into what I was saying than I was aware of. Please enlighten me. I'll be up for about another 20 minutes.
I think we're almost on the same page....have another read, chronologically.

@tonydanz: They were strongly implied during city elf origin for Shianni and during conversation w/ Leliana
In Shianni's case, it's entirely unambiguous

With all due respect I really don't think I'm the one who needs to reread things here.Icinix wrote...

Personally, I don't think it's necessary to accurately portray anything the player doesn't experience firsthand.Spartansfan8888 wrote...
I agree with you... it's not so much censorship as design. We know terrible things take place off screen that aren't shown and that's probably just a decision by the devs to exclude images that could potentially be extremely disturbing to some players. I mean who would enjoy watching Owen hang himself, Connor die, Leliana or Shianni get raped, or even what the darkspawn do to females to make them broodmothers?

Agreed. Which is why most people won't do it and as such will never have the opportunity to be offended by the content.simfamSP wrote...
I don't mind killing a Darkspawn, but a kid? You have to have a pretty cold heart to want to see your sword gut a kid.

But you CAN get backed into those events happening. Did you let Jowan run away? Did you also end up annulling the circle of magi? Then there's no one to perform the ritual and Connor has to die. Also your first time through the game you have no idea whether time is an issue; for all you know if you leave the castle to try and save both Isolde and Connor via Circle of Magi you don't know if Connor will go insane and kill half the village. But yes a person replaying the game who knows how each course of action will turn out can avoid the bloodshed.

Thats your fault though. Play the game amorally, amoral things happen.

Seriously. Why?
What does it add to the game?
Its scarier... Just imagine a Darkspawn killing a kid... There's a social stigma killing kids, and that adds alot to a game that features "just a natural tide of evil" (sorry forgot the exact wordings, but its darkspawn)... Im no psycho or anything but it does add something big...

It's really not though. If it's my first time through the game and I don't pick up the Litany or understand how to use it against Uldred then the circle is annulled; then and there you'll have to kill someone.

Ehhh.. I'm on the side of, what's unseen is far scarier than what is seen. Why do you think Paranormal Activity did so well? My imagination is a far scarier tool than anything my eyes can see, but then again I read a lot so I have practice.

What was perfectly acceptable ten years ago no longer is. Unless we're talking about movies, that is. No problem with eating fetuses there. Got to love the idiocy of society.
Conveniently that was before video games became so mainstream. My god we need an industry crash badly.
So you want a whole lot of people to lose their jobs so you can see a kid die in a game? Twisted.

Dark? Not really, but I actually think DA is a fairly mature game given some of the content in the story and how its handled.
*Spoilers*
Giving the player options like handing a guy over to a desire demon to avoid conflict (loved that part ) or getting rid of Conner is nothing light hearted.

I'm not interested in watching children die. It's threads like these that convince the media we're all sociopathic serial killers.

If someone actually finds that disappointing, well... I guess they'll have to meet their violence-to-children needs elsewhere.

This. I come from the land of The Sun and The Daily Mail. I do not wish to live in fear of Middle England mobs with the wrong idea. <_<
Though, to be fair, a Middle England mob would probably just throw cucumber sandwiches at me.

The censorship in some countries regarding depicting violence done to minors can be pretty strict, particularly in places like Germany and Australia. We could create a separate edition of the game for sale there, one where such content is removed... but, quite frankly, there's no burning need on the design team to do this. As with Connor in the Redcliffe story, it's not that difficult to imply rather than explicitly show.
If someone actually finds that disappointing, well... I guess they'll have to meet their violence-to-children needs elsewhere.
Thank you.

I think Connor getting killed off screen gave me the idea of what happened. I really didn't need to see it. Yes, sometimes watching the death has a different impact--like Brother Genetivi's--but it needn't be done.

Whatever the op's intent, this is a worthwhile discussion because it ties into shifting morality in entertainment and notions of what is acceptable in various regions. Depictions of animal brutality are bad in Germany, nudity is extremely taboo in America, etc..
I don't necessarily need to see children die on screen either, but hey movies do it, and if the story were to call for it in a game I wouldn't be opposed to the idea.
The media and certain people are still harboring the unfortunate notion that games are for kids only and I will always support a developer that pushes boundaries in an intelligent manner. Bioware is one of the few who do that.
Edit: ha, ninja'd by Gaider.
