DA:O was already rated 18 in Germany.

What a bizare and slightly psychopathic question this topic poses. Is there a serious request or desire burning within people to set entire orphanages on fire? O.o?

Well because all NPCs are created equal, but some NPCs are more equal than others.

What was perfectly acceptable ten years ago no longer is. Unless we're talking about movies, that is. No problem with eating fetuses there. Got to love the idiocy of society.

Conveniently that was before video games became so mainstream. My god we need an industry crash badly.

So you want a whole lot of people to lose their jobs so you can see a kid die in a game?  Twisted.

I want a whole lot of people to lose their jobs for the betterment of the industry.

Why, someone would want to kill kids is beyond me.

Okay those kids from little lamplight from Fallout 3? Only time I wanted to actually put a slugger in one, but that's it.

Seriously though,  That's just messed up and the only censorship Law  support.

I think Connor getting killed off screen gave me the idea of what happened. I really didn't need to see it. Yes, sometimes watching the death has a different impact--like Brother Genetivi's--but it needn't be done.

I'm not interested in watching children die. It's threads like these that convince the media we're all sociopathic serial killers.

Who cares? The medias corrupt as is, only idiots take them seriously anymore. God look at Fox.

The censorship in some countries regarding depicting violence done to minors can be pretty strict, particularly in places like Germany and Australia. We could create a separate edition of the game for sale there, one where such content is removed... but, quite frankly, there's no burning need on the design team to do this. As with Connor in the Redcliffe story, it's not that difficult to imply rather than explicitly show.

If someone actually finds that disappointing, well... I guess they'll have to meet their violence-to-children needs elsewhere.

They already did that anyway. Well sort of. The orphanage in the Alienage was pretty grisly imo. Ghost children kinda creep me out.

For the hundredth time, they don't want to kill children, their character does.

I care when it gets an AO rating and no where anywhere is going to sell it. And BioWare's profits fall through the floor. And the DA franchise dies.

Besides that, I'd like to not have to justify myself every time someone over the age of fifty comes along and assumes I must be a Satanic misery demon sent to corrupt society.

And I think it's a tad naive to say only idiots take the media seriously, disregarding certain special snowflake news channels.

The orphanage was an utter joke. Especially when compared to the Shalebridge Cradle which undoubtedly inspired that whole sequence. It really convinced me that BioWare just can't do horror.

Oh shush. Let them continue believing that playing Barbie and Ken with Alistair is more sane than killing pixels.

Why do you feel the need to justify yourself? This is something I'll never understand. If someone is so ignorant, so oblivious, to automatically assume bad things about you JUST because of your interests, why do you care?

Why would you want this? It doesn't inspire realism. It's not something that'd get more players to play. If anything, it's going to really drive some away. No, don't do that. The first game was tame enough. Keep it that way.

I didn't think it was a joke, but I don't think it's really horror per se. But I agree that the Cradle is a memory that will haunt me forever more. The first time Lauryl "spoke" to me, I about jumped outta my skin. And the mannequins.. Oh the mannequins.

Indeed. Not to mention that when this same stupid yet powerful media kicks up a massive fuss, similarly stupid yet powerful governments further tighten the legislation surrounding computer games making it more difficult for gamers and the gaming industry. All because what? Murdering children on-screen is that important to the anti-censorship ideal?

Personally I just avoid anyone who is so stupid as to judge without clarification, in the real world at least. Does it mean I have less friends? Sure, does it mean A lot of people hate me/don't like me? Way more than should. Either way though I know that when I say something it won't offend anyone, and if I do something people will help me.

So, I guess this means that hypothetically, we would never be able to have the Old God Baby involved in any combat or anything until he is older than 18, lest he get injured in combat and get banned in Germany or Australia?

Or they could do something similar to what they did with Conner, which worked out ok. In the mean time, us Aussies will keep pushing for an R-18 rating (a lot of progress has been made on that front lately). Sorry to ruin everyone else's fun. Who knew killing children was such a high priority for some gamers?

Possibly. And that is exactly how I see this debate. If story calls for it, you should be able to put any type of subject matter into an adult rated game. I personally despise any sense of decorum or morality trying to dictate someone's creative output.

Thing is, to the right-wing media and the (vast) number of people who are influenced by it, gaming is already the Judas Priest of the 21st century. Is it an ignorant perspective? Of course it is, and it pisses me off no end, and I generally give fairly short shrift to people expressing such an opinion within my earshot (people who've usually never even played a computer game). But do we have to add fuel to the fire by suggesting indiscriminate child-killing in games just for the lulz?

@Slimgrin - like Leonia said, if they can justify it narratively, then why can't they go the Origins route? It's the more indiscriminate and explicit kind of virtual child-murder that most people are objecting to, isn't it?

Edited to remove spoiler.

Oh, I'm thinking more along the lines of hypothetically having the Old God Kid as a companion or something say maybe 10-16 years old. So maybe he "dies" in combat or maybe gets "attacked" in combat as a companion- would that be a big no-no even if its not some final death like Connor can have? Would that sort of thing get it banned in Germany/Australia? I guess they could end up dancing around the issue like they did with Wild Flower in Jade Empire or something too.
