My first PC tends to be a lightsider. That is, they're filled with so much goodness and light that you could imagine it streaming out their backside.

Kind, compassionate, just, loving, etc. That's just how my first PCs roll; I want to fix the problems of the world one good deed at a time.

How will characters like this end up in Ferelden? I imagine a having difficulty with some of the followers I'm most interested in (Sten, Morrigan), but what about the world itself? Will I be constantly betrayed and used? Will my good intentions come to naught? How often will I find a satisfactory solution vs having to compromise my PC's ideals?

I don't really think you can be a pure lightsider. I expect that you'll make some choices wich look very good, but in the end, turn out to be the worst choice to make.

I don't have any idea of how the world will react to you. I think it varies from person to person.

Much betrayal is probable. And hopefully there wont be the usual right way as to when you can save everyone. Then the other choice ends up being "Screw you guys, I'm going home", which always seems more or less retarded or psychotic.

And you are probably going to have a hard time with Sten and Morrigan. They probably wont like saving puppies.

I definitely tend to play the 'Light' side as well - trying to lead the world from the darkness with my shining beacon of example in each and every way.

I definitely hope my choices aren't constantly being crushed by the weight of a grim and dark world. If it were so, I'd feel like my PC had no influence and or control of his fate. While I know we aren't "The One" - I still would like to feel my PC is elevated, either by talent, birth or by some measure - and that is reflected in the way in influences both his companions and the world. Will I definitely expect to see some consequences that end up grim or not as I intended, yes, but those should be fufilling to the story and plot - not something that breaks my poor little PCs heart.

How often will I find a satisfactory solution vs having to compromise my PC's ideals?

In the end, I hope we never have to sacrifice our PC's ideals. What may happen, is that sometimes really don't like any of the choices (and I'm sure they'll be threads about "Well why didn't the PC just do this?") and you may be left to pick whatever you feel is the "better" choice when given to you. If that is a sacrifice, then you may feel differently. I do hope the world, this harsh Thedas, makes you make tough decision - but I'm hoping the writers didn't create a world that eats up your character and intends to spit you out into one molded view.

I'm optimistic for an compromise.

As another inveterate lightsider (at least for my first and often only playthrough with most games), I definitely agree with you and Maria. Sacrifices and a certain amount of loss and betrayal are good if done well and in a logical manner, but pile to much crap on me and I get pissed because nothing seems to matter. And I don't want to be chewed up and spat (or shat) out by constant gloom-and-doom and treachery, either.

This is still said to be heroic fantasy though, so I have hope.

And I really like the concept of the Calling. It is a tangible price to pay, and a fatal one, but it doesn't mean the Wardens cannot try to enjoy what time they have and make the most of it. And in the end, you (hopefully) go out with a bang, taking a last few of the enemy with you. If that's a good example for how this "dark heroic fantasy" setting works, I'll be happy.

Partly this is the reason I am going to try to play a quixotic character.  A naive type of hero, full of romantic ideals, who will probably get used and abused by others.  I'm curious as to how this going to play out.  In a way, I see him being corrupted a bit by the world, but still able to retain his heroism, just in a more pragmatic way by endgame.

I love the idea of my characters actually having some sort of character development, and not just in the sense of statistic points.  Gives the story a more literary feel.  I hope DA:O is deep enough to play along with me.

I guess it will be somewhat like The Withcer. There is no defined good or evil, everything is in a grey area. Sometimes you have to pick what appears to be the lesser evil.

Dragon Age looks like you'll be making a lot of "grey" moral choices, and be put in situations where you're basically forced to pick the lesser of two evils, or where what is "good" or "evil" isn't obvious.

Like that scene in one of the KOTOR games where you can choose to either give a beggar a handful of credits (which he is subsequently robbed for), or not (in which case he starts robbing others). Except they ruined that by giving you LSP/DSP based on your choice.
