I'm sort of on TheMufflon's side, but not as strongly. It's been common knowledge for a few months now that Fallout: New Vegas would require Steam, and I would guess it's written on the box (It's not been released in the UK yet so I can't check). You can still install the game with the disc (Put the code in, install it and I would guess it unlocks when everyone else's does) and use that disc to reinstall later if you desire.

Everyone's using the same system for it on PC, so everyone gets to play it at the same time. They're not blocking out retail copies for the sake of it - There's no reason for them to differentiate between Retail and Digital, hence all unlock at the same time.

Bugs so far, first area:

* Some artifacts and odd glints/shadows here and there.

* Clipping and bad shadowing over long range.

* Major video lag/slowdown during one battle. Lowered settings a bit and will see how it goes.

Not huge ones, but slightly annoying.

Yep.  PC.  So far the most obvious graphical issue is - to my untrained eye - the occasional glints and artifacts.  Glints naturally draw your eye, but they are clearly not working as intended as opposed to say, the dog tags in the Normandy Crash Site.

That and the game seems poorly optimized, but that was a problem with FO3.  Inconsistent performance in areas, recommend finding a place that slows your system down then dropping your graphics till you can get a consistent FR there.  That's what I'm doin now.

Turning off AA seemed to work the best.  Since I'm running at 1920x1080 it's not that big of a deal anyway.  The jaggies are so tiny.

BTW: So far 4 STR hasn't handicapped me at all, but it's still very early and I've been staying close to town.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a patch drop fairly soon, then.

AngryPants, Nvidia card? I just came to see if anyone was noticing the "glints and artifacts" as well. I run EVGA Precision to monitor temps and compared to Origins this game seems to not heat my two 460's quite as much, I was actually thinking the temp wasn't being reported correctly having installed the latest drivers yesterday.

*nods* Guessing its an nvidia issue then. Quit the game due to fear of toasting a video card. So far though just finished the starter town, the writting seems pretty good so far, game runs well as well on max settings, aside from the annoying flickering/artifacting.

I haven't noticed glints/artifacts much at all since:

1) Leaving the starter town

2) Turning off AA

3) Setting my control panel to Quality (was at High Quality)

Not sure which, if any, of those changed matters.

I'll have to give those a try, thanks for the suggestion.

Turning off AA clears it right up just as an FYI.

Wow, this game is getting a LOT of good reviews. This has got to be obsidian's most successfully received game ever. These reviews are higher than Fallout 3.

Just head over to N4G.

So preload was a freaking waste of time for me.

Something got lost in translation because I had to wait 30 minutes after I woke up to defrag files or whatever then it had to decrypt and that did absolutely nothing because when I click on play it says "game is currently unavailable please try again at another time."

I uninstalled and downloading now... thought I preloaded to avoid this..........

Bleh I never had a problem with secure rom or whatever it was they used to use. Though I'm sure the pirates didn't have a problem with it either, hence the change. Steam should be able to tell the difference between a digital version and a retail version and react accordingly.

No.

The only pirated version of Fallout: New Vegas at this point in time is the X-box 360 version. Steam has actually prevented New Vegas from being pirated successfully. So it's an anti-piracy measure that by all intents and purposes is successful.

And everyone gets to play the game at the same time.

Except on consoles. The X-box 360 is currently the only one pirated.

it's a leak, you can't tell if it's related to the copy protection used. That being said, I like Steam.

I have read a few of the reviews and many of the bugs they have talked about are quite similar to bugs in Fallout 3 and Oblivion so it appears they are more due to the engine neing used (You would figure Bethseda would have ironed those out by now) so hopefully the publisher will let Obsidian fix those up.

Yeah, seems Obsidian did a good job again. I liked KOTOR2 and NWN2, but was a bit sceptical after AP and with regard to the ageing Oblivion engine.

Eurogamer and IGN UK both gave it 9/10.

IGN UK wrote...

Fallout: New Vegas has strong, clever dialogue as well as good writing and quest design. Characters are duplicitous, foul-mouthed, desperate, broken, suave, or all of the above. The voice acting is much better, too, which really helps carry the game's hundreds of interlocking stories. It's a serious game, overall, with moments that are genuinely sobering, but there's also a wicked undercurrent of black humour; in the face of such desolation, the Wasteland's inhabitants have developed an amusingly cynical worldview. Fallout's uncompromising violence, too, is double-edged; seeing crucified Caesar's Legion victims dying in agony isn't funny in any way, but watching a raider's head explode really is.

Fallout: New Vegas is still a fantastic game, only slightly held back by its increasingly outdated tech. Obsidian has created a totally compelling world and its frustrations pale into insignificance compared to the immersive, obsessive experience on offer. Just like the scorched scenery that provides its epic backdrop, New Vegas is huge and sprawling, sometimes gaudy, even downright ugly at times – but always effortlessly, shamelessly entertaining.

Just a quick correction, Bethseda made the engine not Obisidian.

Even though Obsidian did a great job with it though I feel this will be the last game using this engine.

Uh, you didn't need to uninstall. It will always decrypt when you're running a preloaded game for the first time (So that you're able to play it). It's entirely possible the Steam servers were under stress at the time, or it was having a bit of an issue (Which does happen from time to time).

Bethesda didn't make Gamebryo. They adapated it to fit their needs.

Yeah thats the thing. It didn't look like it was doing anything period. The decrypt window just disappears and its like nothing.

Bethesda has announced that there will be one more game using the Gamebryo engine after now (which I don't think has been announced, unless it is Rage) and then they will be making a new engine.

I kinda wish they'd use Cryengine.

Rage is using the Bethesda-exclusive id Tech 5 engine.

I prefer Ubisoft Montréal's Dunia engine, personally :P

Digging it so far, haven't really run into any bugs after a good 5 hour session that I'm still barely past the first town. Gotta love games that give you hours upon hours of gameplay.

I'm sort of half thankful I won't be playing it for a month or so. One of my big problems with FO3 was how it constantly crashed on me (It's sort of fixed, now), and I can see myself getting frustrated if NV does it as much as the reviews state (I doubt it, though) as it's boot the system back up and then load Steam etc.

Will be keeping my eyes on reviews, though, but I have a feeling that Obsidian have "done it" with NV.
