It doesn't just happen with Steam, though. GTA IV wouldn't unlock on PC until release day, for example.

All Fallout: New Vegas copies (On PC) use the same system. If the retail one unlocked any earlier then you'd have Steam (And D2D etc) buyers complaining it's unfair that their copy hasn't unlocked. Each region unlocks separately, and that means all UK copies unlock at X Time, all US copies unlock at Y time. You can pre-purchase a game on Steam and wait months for it to unlock. I could go and prepurchase Hunted: The Demon's Forge right now and not play it until next year.

It's not the fault of Valve (Well, Bethesda, as they set the release date) that the game won't be playable until a certain time and date. Bethesda chose Steamworks, they chose to release on this date - Aim everything at them about it. Valve distribute games, the publishers set the prices and release dates.

Stop being so damn rational about it! I hate it when people do that.

Guess I'm just being a bit contrary due to my general dislike for Steam (not to mention Bethesda and their amazing QA). And besides, it's all hardly an issue for me as I rarely get games on release day anyway, as it takes Amazon UK about 3 days to ship things here.

And now I'm still undecided as to get the game now or wait a while. After all, there's also the new Drakensang and Force Unleashed 2 coming next week, and money is rather tight.

OK, anyone tried the hardcore mode yet? Is it really hardcore? I'd try it myself but dont have the game yet.

Nowhere as of yet. But it's supposed to come out the 29th here in Belgium (and Holland) if stores are correct (and they did say the 15th first, only changing that at the last moment).
For once I'm going to have to order locally, as it'll be a few months until a UK release, and neither Amazon nor Play.com nor Game even have it listed so far.

Dammit, OnlyShallow, you make far too much sense On a rational level you're right, I know you're right. From a purely emotional perspective, however, I am sitting here staring at my copy of the game, which arrived at 8.15 this morning, and I can't install it yet. This is worse than if I'd just gone into town in the morning and picked it up then



I realise it's unfair to digital downloaders, but I guess I always considered the possibility of being able to play the game a day early to be a 'perk' of pre-ordering a physical copy (doesn't usually happen, mind), just as being able to pre-load and therefore play the game the second it's released is a perk of DD. As it stands, I'll still have to install the game first come midnight tonight, while anyone who has the Steam version can just start playing. *Sigh*, poor me

Nope, doesn't let me install, tried twice. I can input my code, which then tells me my game is now Steam activated; the next step is to click the install button, but when I do, I'm told I can't until the game unlocks.

Luckily all games here are released fully in English, as I'd *never ever* play a game translated into Dutch.

Hmmm, think I'll go hit the town and see if I can still snatch one of the New Vegas t-shirts the stores of the biggest chain of gamestores here was offering for pre-orders. Maybe I can convince them that since the game isn't officially released yet it still sorta vaguely counts as a pre-order!

Indeed. I went to my local one and asked about preordering. The incredibly cute lady there said that t-shirts are limited and that they go to console copies as a priority.
