Beware, fledgling adventurers and wannabe wastelanders, for it is very much possible to run into giant radscorpions and even *gasp* deathclaws at level 3 at a few stone throws away from the starting town.

I'm loving this game.

Wat.

Tell me so I do not go that way.

Please?

:crying:

As far as Deathclaws, avoid the whole area around where Sloan is marked on your map (i.e. it's east of that giant white cross you can see from the Goodsprings Cemetary). Giant Radscorpions I have only seen (so far) north of the Mojave Outpost near bottom of map). Then again, I play on easy because I'm a WIMP. Image IPB So, both creatures may be more prevalent. Your mileage may vary.

My advice is to follow main questline at least up to you reach Novac. Then, acquire Boone as your companion (check the interior of the dinosaur in the night hours). Dude has frickin' saved my bacon numerous times now, and he has a dark and sordid backstory that plays out the more quests you complete and, thus, the more comfortable he feels dishing info out to you. I also suspect he will shortly become the focus of much fanfiction in the near future (not by me, but I see the potential there for likeminded folks). Probably of at LEAST Charon proportions, if not more.

You don't need any specific perks to get him do you? Edit: NVM I just needed to pass a skill check apparently.

It's pretty obvious where the deathclaws are.

I tagged sneak & have decent perception, so it's not hard to stay unnoticed from the giant radscorpions and bail out. Those things run so fast that it's impossible to get away if they spot you unless you get them stuck on a rock.

See...I focused on speech and endurance. My Perception sucks. >_<

I didn't notice the Geekos in the tutorial til one bit me. >_>

Boone helps boost your perception, too, so he should be a big help for you.

Meh, I think I was like 6 last time I watching anything having to do with Monty Python and I'm keeping it that way, as I'm pretty sure I'll find nothing about it funny now.

What?!  Those are hilarious and never grow old.  But at the very least the ME2 writers shouldn't get credit.

I just went to Nipton for the first time... OMG...   Safe to say this feels more like a post-apocalyptic Wasteland should.

Just stay with doing the quests and walk the road for the first few levels before wondering off on your own, and you wont run into anything too crazy.

I was just off a major highway and got mauled by a pack of radscorpions.   Oh, and those barkscorpions- ouch!

I ran into a ton of them just West of the HELIOS station. Right between there and Hidden Valley is a place called Scorpion Gulch. There be scorpions!

Finding the game tough and frustrating. Had to scale back from Normal to Easy but think will have to head down to Very Easy. Giant Radscorpions and Deathclaws are insta death. Only up to Level 8.

Thanks for the tip about Boone, DragonRacer13 .. will have to go get him. How well does he hold up in hardcore mode - does he die easily? I don't wanna get a companion then have him mauled by a Deathclaw instantly.

Where is Boone, whoever that is??

I saw a Dog outside the Correctional Facility and ran up all happy-happy... he wouldn't even talk to me. *sadeyes, miss Dogmeat*

He's in Novac. Has the night shift on the dino. Think it was night at least. Anyway you have a do a quest for him in town. He's a pretty tragic figure and down powerful with a sniper. I ended up changing him out for Cass because he felt a little too powerful, and well, its Cass!

How many companions can you have at once?

2ish. You get one that talks to you and then your pick of one robot, a dog or an eyebot. Haven't found the dog yet but I really like the peak with the eyebot. As well it flouts higher than what you'll be shooting your enemies at so he rarely takes friendly fire.

I'm level 13 with a nice arsenal of weapons and still get owned by deathclaws. They make everything else I have fought so far, including wiping out a super mutant stronghold just now, too easy.

No idea about hardcore mode, since I'm playing on easy. But, even on easy, he's holding up a lot better (IMO) than Charon did in Fallout 3 (on easy). I adored Charon, but I felt like I had to save every two seconds because he'd inevitably kick the bucket. So far, there's only been two instances where Boone would have died (on easy mode, your followers go unconscious instead of outright dying... yay!). And that's just him wandering around in pants, boots, a t-shirt, and beret. Don't even have armor on him and he's still bad****. Then again, since he's a sniper and I also play "kill from afar", neither of us takes a lot of in-your-face melee damage.

That venom they have is very nasty. The first time I turned a corner on a pack on nightstalkers was a very unpleasant surprise also.

I am having a lot of fun with the game and, in my opinion, the environment is put together much better than Fallout 3. The world feels more alive to me and less like I am walking around in a sandbox which revolves around my character. There are several occasions where I have visited locations, spoken to people, and returned later to find everything has changed without any intervention on my part.

There are signs everywhere telling you not to go that way. Stop signs up in bunches as well as hand painted wooden signs which say something along the lines of "warning deathclaws ahead." Multiple NPCs in the starting town also warn you not to go north because it is full of animals that will only get angry if you try to shoot them.

Amazingly, some people still go in there and whine about it. Mind boggling.

I managed to kill a giant radscorpion with my level 3 character by sneaking up on it and shooting off its sting, then switching to a sledgehammer. Then again my character has 10 agility, 10 luck & kamikaze perk; being able to queue 7 shots in VATS with the 9mm and critting a lot helps.

I didn't play this game yet, but have seen it (my brother happens to be a mega fan of the series, so he bought the collector edition). All I can say from the 15 minutes I've seen is that the game looks better than FO3. Gameplay wise, graphic-wise, voiceacting-wise.

It is night shift in the dino mouth at Novac, for anyone interested.  I was surprised by how much he opened up to me (so far) - poor guy's been through a lot.  His insane marksmanship saved my life a number of times when I was lower level.  If you're struggling with getting killed by the wildlife at first, he certainly will help.  Now that I've leveled up some, he doesn't seem so overpowered.  He totally convinced me to go NCR, also.  "I wish I had a First Recon guy looking after me!"

Just don't take his beret off, ha.

Speaking of Deathclaws, anyone found what weapons work best this time around? I'm level 14 now and they are still kicking my butt on easy. I remember in Fallout 3, the trick was to use the dart gun to cripple their legs, then you could finish them off with your weapon of choice (generally Chinese assault rifle, for me).

I can't find a good combo like that this time around. For the giant radscorpions, I've kind of got a system of leaping onto rocks and using armor-piercing rounds on them. But the deathclaws have me stumped so far. I can usually wreak havoc on most things with my cowboy repeater, but not these guys.

Making me seriously consider trying out the missile launcher, but I fear my VATS will suck because I've been pumping small guns and other talents... and not big guns, since I usually like the small, stealthy type of character. I can just see my little courier trying to fire her missile launcher at the deathclaw... the missile goes sailing by its head and misses it completely because she is TEH SUCK at missile launchers... and then the deathclaw gets pissed and reaches her in, like, two steps (despite being 50 feet away initially) and proceeds to gut her and Boone mercilessly. Deathclaws is easier if you engage them at long range which is to say more than 50 feet or at the top of a very high rock, trigger discipline trait (great in vats) and a decent sniper is very effective way of dispatching them, companions especially the more durable ones are great for distraction.
